  • Great knock off calculator - BUT . . .
Color: 991EX Black
Okay, final verdict first: I like this calculator, but only after fighting with it. As to the quality of this build it feels cheap. Oh well, I am used to TI scientific calculators (required at Harvard). The buttons are pretty—and clear— and the shapes are okay, They WORK, but they just feel "cheesy" (sorry, but facts is facts). But does this thing do what out is supposed to? Yes, but the manual is a mess (more on that later). Okay so the display is a generous size. You have four lines of large text and a mini bar at the top that tells you what mode you are in. BUT, as you can see from the product images, this is also capable of much smaller text and graphs, displays, and whatnot. As a scientific calculator this works nicely. This is not a toy. In fact unless you NEED a scientific calculator, this will make you cry with all of its excess capabilities. The advanced functionality is really supreme. It can't be overstated how useful this thing is for advanced calculatory work. It just "feels" cheap. but it works and that is 99% of the point, right? Here is my main complaint (please see images): The writing tablet is pressure sensitive but the manual gives you absolutely no help with this. I was about to write a scathing review but I decided to look for any indication that there was a way to fix the screen (my pictures show it how it came out of the box). Well, the LOCK button is at the top (right) of the unit. I mean "on the side" top, not on the front top. That big top round button is in fat the "erase the tablet" key, but without instructions I had thought was some form of power button. Yeah, I know, there is a button labeled "ON" but seriously, I could not get rid of that green cloud or erase what I wrote no matter what keys I pressed. So THANK YOU to the reviewer who pointed out the "LOCK" button and where it was. Now I am happy (see image). Okay, so the manual. Ugh! They printed to the edge of the page and when you try to read the pages it is annoying and damaging to the paper. Please see THAT image! So yeah, the manual is dense, has small printing, and is poorly manufactured (gotta save that money! Every cent counts towards the profit margin!). So F---- the manual! It sucks! It also has NO hELP on the writing tablet. Now, all of that aside, is it fun to have a scientific calculator that allows you to write/erase/write more (there is no "memory function" on the writing tablet) when you need to make a note or handwrite an equation? YES! Yes it is fun. And that is the ONLY reason this gets 4.5 stars instead of three. Well, that and the top row of buttons is kind of sexy — very stylish. And the stylus is a nice touch. But the writing tablet (e-ink) display is NOT VERY BRIGHT (despite what it looks like in the photos). Now, I did find out that if you press down little harder you get a thicker, brighter line, so I guess that if you had artistic abilities (which sadly I do not) you could draw a nice manga comic and take a picture of that while calculating Pi to the 17th decimal point. All in all, yeah, it works. And it comes with its own case (just close the flap) so you don't need a separate case. Also, someone (smart) put the writing tablet on the RIGHT because if it was on the left (which would seem to make more sense), your hand would mash the buttons on the calculator — so "fine, whatever . . ." maybe 4.75 stars — but FIX THAT MANUAL (and explain how to use the writing pad!) ... show more

  • Amazing for grown ups too!
Color: 991EX Black
Every reviewer seems to say this is great for kids but as an engineer, let me tell you, it's good for grown ups too! The reason I got this item is for the LCD writing pad. I regularly have to take some notes in the office, for instance when being on the phone with someone, or doing a quick calculation myself. I often do these on post-it notes and it is super wasteful and messy. Now I have a clean place to do that without waste! The contrast is a bit not great but that's okay, I think it's simply how the technology is, without backlight which would kill the battery. LCD pad writing feels natural enough to be really usable. USB charging is convenient. Any 5V source will charge this. There is also a super small solar panel at the top of the calculator for dual-power source. The calculator itself seems like a clone of a well known brand, a typical scientific calculator nowadays. I would be careful before buying that for a kid for use at school, a lot of schools are a bit particular as to which calculator to use, and kids sometimes prefer to have the same calculator as everyone else. This one being a bit more exotic - just make sure, before you buy, that it will be fine. But for adults, go for it! The stylus conveniently stores inside the calculator, so it does not take space and you will not lose it (unless you try hard). All common basic scientific calculation features seem to be there. What may be missing is financial calculation features, it would have been nice to have them just in case, but I think it's by design, to not confuse kids. And it's branded as a scientific calculator, not a financial calculator, so not an issue and no stars removed. I tried a few calculations already and results seem correct, which I take as a given for this sort of product. For $35.99 at the time of reviewing... I would say this is a fair price. I would get this calculator over other brands due to the LCD writing pad, but again, check the requirements (if any) of the school, for kids. Solid product! ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised by the quality!
Color: 991EX Black
We got this to replace a Casio scientific calculator and were extremely pleased to receive a solid, durable, and quality built scientific calculator. Considering this was not a "name brand" scientific calculator, we weren't quite sure what to expect. But it's surprisingly high quality. The case opens and shuts with a very pleasing, solid feel too it. The calculator is a bit heavy, but not in a burdensome way - more in the way that makes you feel like it's well built. It's rechargeable with a normal usb-c cable and also has solar charging which isn't super necessary but it's nice as a backup option. The digital notepad with the stylus is a really cool feature too. But beyond the "quality of construction" and the unique features (like the stylus), evaluated a scientific calculator is pretty straightforward: it works, the screen is bright enough to see it, and it has all the functions our teenage daughter needs for her 10th grade math class. Overall we are extremely happy with this calculator, and would highly recommend it! ... show more

  • lightweight and powerful calculator
Color: Black
This calculator is very powerful. Since cell phones aren’t allowed at school, I ordered this one for my kid to use there. It offers a lot of features, many of which I still haven’t fully figured out how to use. The manual isn’t very helpful, so I had to rely on previous reviews to learn how to display decimals instead of fractions. It feels quite lightweight, which I like, and the fact that it’s rechargeable is a big plus. ... show more
