Description

One of the most wildly popular horror movies of all time, Stuart Gordon s enduring splatter-comedy classic Re-Animator returns to Blu-ray in a stunning 4K restoration packed with special features! When medical student Dan Cain advertises for a roommate, he finds one in the form of Herbert West. Initially a little eccentric, it some becomes clear that West entertains some seriously outlandish theories specifically, the possibility of re-animating the dead. It s not long before Dan finds himself under West s influence, and embroiled in a serious of ghoulish experiments which threaten to go wildly out of control... Based on H.P. • Love it
The best edition. Included: -New transfer / restoration of the Unrated version, with all the gore intact. The best transfer out there, this is the one you want. -Restoration of the Integral version of the film. This is a weird cut. Basically, when censors edited down the "unrated" cut of the film to make an "r-rated" version, they put back in some cut scenes and alternate takes. The Integral version hybridizes these two, including all the gore alongside the extra scenes. Extends the runtime from 86min to 105min, so you actually get more movie, although this has never been the director's "approved" cut. -Lovely audio all around. The audio was restored as well, and the excellent soundtrack has never sounded better. -Ridiculously great packaging! The outer box is a gorgeous digipack. Looks great on any shelf. Inside are great extras. You get a Criterion-style booklet where a writer describes the making-of, and some lobby cards which are so beautiful I might frame them. -Tons of features. Commentaries, interviews, making-of specials... it's all here. More than anyone needs. Love it. Great transfer, great packaging, great movie. Get it. ... show more

  • Still a masterpiece after 35 years!
I remember when I first saw this movie I was in my early teens barely having heard of it before. My only frame of reference was my oldest brother and my mother talking about it with me being too young to understand what they were getting at, at the time. Well before I saw it when my brothers bought a used VHS of the now considerably rare R-rated version, I had never seen any previews, snuck a peek at any scenes, nor did I have any concept as to who H.P. Lovecraft even was. Anyhoo, once I saw it(with scenes that I didn't know at the time weren't in the Unrated version) I instantly loved the whole concept and story but was disappointed in the minimal gore and minimal nudity. Thankfully it wasn't that long until I had some birthday money to happily find a used VHS copy of the Unrated version. While the gore and nudity was what I wanted, I was still shocked to see which scenes were still used, which scenes from the R-rated version weren't used, plus the gore, graphic violence, and nudity were intense for me at first(as per seeing them all for the very first time but after many more watches I got something out of both versions plus saw one brilliant zombie not at all like anything that I had seen before. All of that being said, I have since then become an instant fan of it's first sequel of Bride of Re-Animator and several years later Beyond Re-Animator, finally I have upgraded to the DVD's of them and now the Blu-rays. In this review I will focus on the actor's performances, the characters, the gore effects, the humor, and the eye-candy. First I can't emphasize enough everyone's excellent performances. Let's start of course with Herbert West aka Re-Animator himself, Jeffrey Combs. I have heard that Combs was a stage actor originally and his actor experience more than shows here. He literally stays right in character playing Dr. Herbert West a young, highly eager/enthusiastic, stern, obsessed, opinionated, questionably moral, highly scientific, genius of whom is willing to do all he deems necessary to beat death through science. Bruce Abbot is excellent as his semi-reluctant partner of who is young, handsome, likable, cool headed, and considerably torn between West's experiments and his relationship with his beautiful girlfriend Megan. David Gail is great as the plagiaristic, manipulative, sleazy, evil, ruthless, and cunning foil to Dr. West, Dr. Carl Hill. The gore effects are sensational with practical effects, live actors to play the zombies, realistic gore, and creative looks to the morgue zombies gruesome looks. Also having David Gail as Dr. Hill seem to have his severed head and body perform both separately and together was pure genius. Among funny scenes in the movie one that definitely gives me a chuckle is when Dr. Cain and Dr. West struggle with a living dead Rufus the cat. Also, Jeffrey Combs has several funny moments in his classic deadpan deliveries. Among them my most favorite of his hilarious lines is, "Who'd listen to a talking head? Get a job in the sideshow." That line always gives me a guffaw. Barbara Crampton is gorgeous, a believable character, and most of all she is just plain smoking hot. She makes for both great eye-candy and sex appeal as pleasing as her nude scenes are in general. Overall, if you love zombie movies(serious or comedic), love great 80's horror(serious or comedic), love Jeffrey Combs, enjoy excellent gore and practical effects, enjoy a good villain, enjoy great sex appeal and nudity, If you are into Lovecraft and in general just love a great classic with all of the best stuff to be entertaining, well then this movie is right up your alley. • I Suggest You Get a PEN!
Re-Animator (1985). I love this delightful, hilarious, gory movie with great intensity. I probably first saw it in 1986 after its release on video (thanks, Fangoria, for pointing me at it). The cast is, of course, aces, with Jeffrey Combs leading the way as the arrogant and brilliant Herbert West. Bruce Abbott is somewhat underappreciated, I think, as the well-meaning and steadily falling apart Dan Cain. Abbott is essential for making us believe any of this, and his failures and sadness are all the more affecting because he just wants to help people--and winds up getting them killed. Barbara Crampton is great, even if her character is severely underdeveloped. I wonder if, going forward, Stuart Gordon made sure to give her meatier roles to perform, as a result of short-shrifting her here. David Gale also delights as the sublimely evil and gross Dr. Hill. The sparring between him and West is priceless. So, let's talk about the headless cunnilingus scene. Stuart Gordon has always challenged me with his concoction of perversity and gooey violence, and Re-Animator is no different. As I get older, I sort of wish I had a TeeVee edit of this scene because, real or make believe, Barbara Crampton is still completely naked and bound to a stainless steel table while a prosthetic head inter-cut with Gale's is positioned between her legs. Yuck. I know this is the point, but I wonder if it could have been achieved without being so gonzo. I suspect it was Gordon's intent to sew discomfort, hence why I wrestle with it, but it makes me more anxious for Barbara, as opposed to her character Meg. Anyway, just some thoughts. Crampton has spoken a lot about this moment, and while she jokingly refers to this in the commentary as "Oh great, here comes my mother's favorite scene", if she's okay, I'm okay. The Arrow Blu is absolutely gorgeous, crisp and clear, and loaded with almost Hammer-esque texture. The extras are all sublime. I've owned many versions of this film over the years (from a TeeVee recorded Betamax tape to this one with everything in between) and this one is the best I've seen. ... show more
