  • Great prenatal vitamins!!
Style: Prenatal One Size: 150 Count (Pack of 1)
My husband and I started to talk about expanding our family next year. Being that I am a nurse I wanted to get started on preparing my body for the upcoming pregnancy. I started to do research on prenatal vitamins out there and wanted to find a natural prenatal that would give my body and the future baby all of the nutrients that might be lacking from my diet. I have read a lot of reviews and have done nutritional fact comparisons for several prenatal vitamins that are available over the counter. I have to say that Rainbow Light Prenatal is a great one-a-day vitamin that is filled with 100% natural nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy as well as probiotics and digestive support nutrients which ease digestion and prevent stomach upset. This vitamin caught my attention because it was a whole food based vitamin, and for the daily intake of just one tablet, it packs a lot of nutrients. Although I am not yet pregnant and cannot speak for morning sickness, this vitamin is very gentle on my stomach and it does not make me nauseated nor does it give me gas/ constipation. Since taking these vitamins, I have to say that my energy level has increased tremendously, my hair and nails got noticeably stronger and I feel an overall boost to my immune system! I have to say that feeling "these effects" after taking this vitamin is a pleasant surprise because I have never felt any of them while taking multi-vitamins before. While preparing to conceive, I am trying to cut back on my caffeine intake and this "boost" of energy that I am feeling lately is definitely helpful. So while scanning the nutritional facts on the bottle it is quickly apparent that this prenatal packs a lot of nutrients with most of them being at 100% or more of the daily value. However, because Rainbow Light is a great source of Iron, 30 mg (167% of daily value) and taking too much calcium at the same time as an iron supplement will not allow the iron to be absorbed properly, the calcium supplementation in this prenatal is on the lower side, only 200 mg (15% of daily value). The same goes for the a lower content for Magnesium, only 100 mg (22% of daily value). I did not see this as a problem, I simply added a Calcium/ Magnesium supplement to my prenatal routine. Calcium is very important to any woman, especially to women who are pregnant or lactating, so this was a must in my book. I know it's a bit inconvenient that I need to add another supplement to give this vitamin a better boost, however by braking the iron and calcium up in two different servings I can ensure proper absorption of both and that makes it worth while. I also feel that adding a DHA supplement to a prenatal routine is very important, therefore I decided to take a separate DHA/ EPA supplement. So I take the Rainbow Light vitamin and the DHA supplement in the morning with breakfast and take me Calcium/ Magnesium supplement in the evening with dinner. Even though I had to add separate supplements to make this prenatal vitamin more complete, I don't see that as a problem at all. The fact that Rainbow Light is 100% whole food derived and natural as well as being gentle on my stomach makes it a great vitamin. By adding the calcium/ magnesium supplement and taking it a different time is actually a benefit because it ensures proper absorption of both nutrients, iron and calcium, which are so important in pregnancy. ... show more

  • Side by side comparison between Rainbow Light and IntraNaturals prenatal vitamins
Style: Prenatal One Size: 150 Count (Pack of 1)
I am not a nutrition expert by any means but I have been taking a prenatal vitamin for about four years between ttc, being pregnant, nursing, ttc again, and now in my second pregnancy so I have done a lot of research on them. My top two prenatal vitamins have been Rainbow Light and IntraNaturals so here is a side by side comparison of the two. Both have very similar vitamin and mineral amounts (many are the exact same amounts). IntraNaturals has more Vit D which I am always low on, while Rainbow Light has more iron. Some pregnant women have trouble with their iron levels getting low but mine are always good so extra iron just binds me up (probably a little too much info but worth noting). A couple other vitamins have slightly different amounts but those were the two that affect me the most during pregnancy. Both brands have a probiotic blend added which is a must and I even use another separate probiotic because pregnancy takes a toll on your digestive and immune system (your gut health has a large impact on your immune system!). IntraNaturals has ten probiotic strains listed and Rainbow Light only has one but I am not sure which has a higher cfu count as only Rainbow Light has listed theirs (25,000,000CFU). Generally I would say it is better to have a variety or probiotics though I wish I knew how many were in there. Both also contain an enzyme blend which I desperately need during pregnancy (like I said my digestive system needs a lot of help during this time). Intranaturals wins this category as well as they include six different enzymes (at 100mg) while Rainbow Light only has four (at 24mg). I have also noticed that if I take my Rainbow Light and don't eat right away I get sweaty and nauceous but I have been able to take my Intranaturals without that happening. Not normally a problem but sometimes when helping a toddler in the morning I don't always eat right when I think I will! The last section would be Rainbow Light's prenatal blend vs IntraNaturals organic fruit and vegetable powders. Rainbow Light contains a 90mg prenatal blend that includes red raspberry leaf extract, ginger, and organic spirulina. These are all good things during pregnancy and I actually have tried drinking red raspberry tea in the third trimester. Instead of this blend, IntraNaturals has organic beet root, carrot root, spinach leaf, broccoli leaf, collards leaf, blueberry fruit, raspberry, pomegranate, cucumber, ginger root, cabbage leaf, blackberry, cherry, and cranberry fruit powder (totaled up to 300mg). Now neither of these are going to replace eating your fruits and veggies but I like the extra nutritional support! The pills themselves are similar in size with the Rainbow Light pill being slightly larger. I have never had troubles swallowing pills so that doesn't matter much to me and both have a natural smell. They just smell like vitamins to me but if you are used to taking coated vitamins that don't have a smell you might want to be aware. Overall both of these are good vitamins though IntraNaturals actually comes out ahead for me! The extra vitamin D with only 100% instead of 167% of the daily iron are big for me! Plus the IntraNaturals doesn't bother my stomach at all if I get caught up in something and don't eat immediately afterwards. I also like the variety in their enzyme, probiotic and fruit and veggie blends as it seems a little more well rounded. That said, Rainbow Light definitely comes out ahead price-wise as you get 150 pills for the price of 60 of the IntraNaturals. I would feel confident taking either of these prenatals so they both get five stars from me. I am not a nutritional expert and if you have nutrition questions I suggest asking your nutritionist or doctor but I hope my review was helpful! ... show more
