  • Feature rich, nearly perfect entry level HT.
Color: Black
**Edit** 7-7‐2023‐ Okay I now own four of these little guys for family outing and emergency comms. Updating battery and Programming scores. While twice as much as a uv5r or $10 more than a gt-3wp you really get way more features with this radio. 1) From inside home (cbc construction) to inside vehicle two miles aways gmrs was clear with basic antenna. 2) Airband from inside home is picking up planes on Miami and Palm Beach approach freqs pretty just okay (expected). Hearing tower pretty clearly when within 2.5 to 3 miles, not great LoS. Really need an external mounted or scanner antenna to take advantage of air band rx 3)Chirp Next project has corrected the formatting issue. So adding/importing channel memories from other HTs is way easier now. No issues going back or forth between Chirp or the proprietary software. liked it so much I bought a second. Little HT packs a lot of great features. For an entry level HT under $50 it is a great value. Updating to 5 stars. --------------end of edit. -Features- 5 stars This is legit a full band radio that legit outputs 5W (or very near across all bands), all while fitting in pocket or palm of hand. The air band monitor, CTS/DCS scanning, vhf/uhf scanning, voice scrambler are all great features. -Programming- 5 stars (updated) While it is supported by Chirp Next (use Ryage uv58plus), the file format in Chirp is missing some columns that the proprietary SW (freely available at radtels.com) includes. If reading a Chirp made config using proprietary SW, you will get a read error. The proprietary SW also lets you customize boot logo, boot message and some minor UI color tweaks. Would be nice if Chirp project was a little more aligned. -Form Factor- 5 stars Easily fits in pocket or palm of your hand. -Sound quality- 5 stars In all honesty I only have BF GT-3WP to compare with so my sample is small. Overall sounds clear. -Battery Life- 5 stars (updated) I haven had it long enough to get data on battery life. USB-C charging on radio is a plus. Will update when I have some data. -Durability- 4.0 stars Compared to my BF GT-3WP (which are solid bricks), the RT-890 feels a bit on the fragile side. I would recommend caution with the display when out scrambling around. I ordered some anti glare tablet screen protectors and cut pieces to cover display area. Just in case. -User Interface- 5 stars Great interface. UI and display are easily readable in sunlight. I like the black background, with actual RX and TX power levels displayed. I wish all the other Radtel HTs would copy this interface. I'm guessing the interface is Iradio or Ryage design. ... show more

  • Small Radio With Big Radio Features! (Important update on 11/13/24)
Color: Black
As my HT collection (addiction) surpasses 30 radios, this one stands out as the being the smallest radio I've ever seen with a full size display and keypad. The reason it can be so small is because a larger speaker is mounted behind a larger keyboard to save space. The RT-490 and a few others utilize this space saving design. This review also applies to the RUYAGE UV58 Plus, the SOCOTRAN UV-5118 Plus and the IRADIO UV-5118 Plus. Also, I've been noticing a lot of AI generated reviews lately. This is not one of those... Update on 11/13/24: Along with the "stock" v1.35 & v1.37 firmware, there is another more advanced one available from the Radtel website called "Radtel RT-890 oefwcom m70cm v2.1.8". Note that there are two versions of it depending on your PCB rev. (make sure you download the correct one!) The advanced "oefwcom m70cm" firmware came out a few months back and I'm sorry I didn't notice this sooner. There are plenty of videos on YT describing all of the extra features. (try to watch the most recent videos) Note that this firmware has features similar to the famous Qaunsheng "Egzumer" firmware, such as shortwave receive, band scope, waterfall and a lot of adjustments "under the hood". This isn't something that a beginner or casual user will probably ever need. I would say "for advanced users only". LOL Also, since the RT-890 has a bigger, better display, the band scopes, waterfalls, etc look much better! One more thing, there are now 2,000mAH batteries available for $13.49 on the Radtel site. Things I like: 1. The display! (the best display I've ever seen on a Chinese radio) 2. Larger keyboard. (compared to most other radios) 3. It's the smallest 5 watt dual band radio I've seen with a "full sized" display and "full size" keyboard. 4. Good audio. (both transmit & receive) 5. 220 MHz band coverage. 6. Aircraft band receive. (read observation #1 below) 7. USB-C charging. (a must have feature these days) 8. One Touch Search. (make sure you read about how it supposed to work) 9. Custom boot screen! (upload your favorite picture to display during power up) 10. Factory and 3rd party firmware updates! Things I don't like: 1. No real "low" power setting. (low power is 3 watts - I would prefer 1 watt or less) A few observations I have made that might not have been elaborated on elsewhere: 1. "Reports of Distorted AM Aircraft Band Audio" - Most of the new radios coming out with AM aircraft receive (several brands) probably do have some overloading issues on strong AM signals. However, another issue contributing to the distorted aircraft band receive stems from using the wrong frequency steps. I'm using 25 KHz frequency steps and it sounds good to me. When scanning with the improper frequency steps, the radio is not stopping on the correct frequency (but something close enough) which is causing the "off frequency" distortion. I live within 20 miles of (3) large airports and I hear clear sounding chatter all day on a few frequencies. (note that the new firmware mentioned above may cure most or all of the AM Aircraft Band receive complains) 2. "One Touch Search" - I've noticed some confusion on what the actual function of the "one touch frequency search" button is. Note that this is not a typical "search" function where you can search for random activity within miles of you. (which the radio also has) Think of it as working more like a "frequency counter". It requires that another radio is within a few feet. This feature is referred to as "close call RF capture" on some police scanners . It will quickly display the frequency and PL tone (if present) and displays it on the screen. At that point you can talk to the other radio. You also have the option to store it in a memory channel as well. Remember, it will not work unless the other radio is within about 20 feet. (capture range depends on how powerful the other radio is) 3. "USB Charging" - I read another review where they claimed that phone chargers did not work. I beg to differ, I have used (3) different styles of phone chargers and they all worked fine. Maybe there are some USB-C cables that don't work, due to the "Emark" chip inside the plug which determines the charging voltage & current. I suggest trying a different cable or charger. (See below for a good one) 4. "USB-C AC Adapter" - If you want a good inexpensive USB-C "wall wart" to use with this radio, check out the MAILESI TPA-5950100U. (ASIN B088D4CNHV) It even comes in a 2-pack for when you buy two of these radios! 5. "Screen Scratching Easily" - I love reading the 1 star reviews! LOL This radio has a screen protector that's hard to see. Use your fingernail in one of the corners to get it to start peeling off. The screen underneath will be shiny and more scratch resistant. (you're welcome) 6. "CHIRP programming software" - Select "Ruyage UV58Plus" as the radio model. (use the factory programming software to upload the custom boot screen picture) 7. "Known variants" - RUYAGE UV58 Plus, the SOCOTRAN UV-5118 Plus and the IRADIO UV-5118 Plus. Conclusion: This is a beautiful, small, easy to use radio to carry around in your pocket. As far as I know, this is the smallest 5 watt, dual band radio with a "full sized" keyboard & display. Note that the TIDRADIO H3 is a little smaller, but has a very small keyboard and speaker compared to the RT-890. If you consider yourself an "advanced user", I recommend taking this radio to a new level by installing the "Radtel RT-890 oefwcom m70cm" firmware. Lastly, I did find higher capacity 2000mAH batteries on the Radtel website for $13.49 at the time of this writing. ... show more

  • Very nice color screen, lots of features and compact size
Color: Black
Radtel 890 HT radio, I love the crisp color screen, the frequency color goes from pale blue to dark blue when a signal is received then to red when transmitting. Lots of information on main screen. menu is easy to navigate. its a nice compact size ( a bit smaller than a Yaesu FT-70) on air reports good clear TX audio. It is programable with CHIRP you will have to select the RUYAGE UV58 in the CHIRP radio select ( not the UV58 Plus) The manual is not the best just basic information on functions. It has a frequency search mode that when activated does UHF......could not find in the instructions how to do VHF....figured it out...the # key will toggle between U & V. Overall I like the radio and for the price point it is very a good value. A few nit picky things I don't like are it seems in dual watch both A & B sides are either VFO or Memory cant do A side VFO and B side Memory. The manual is not the best but does list the features and menu with out much description or example. Bottom line for me is there is more to like than dislike. ... show more

  • I agree with others: This is the best of the worst
Color: Black
For the price this is one of the better cheap radios because of it's screen, display layout, and features. I like it better than the Talkpod A36 and UV-5R (all variants) which is really where this radio belongs in terms of line up. However, at the end of the day, these cheap radios are nothing more than toys in terms of radio TX and RX capability/quality. Not to diminish their usefulness as "Walkie talkies" but in terms of scanning, quality of reception/sound, and use as an enthusiast radio, this should be at the bottom of your list. This should be at the top of your list if you're looking for a cheap HAM radio for 2-way comms. Terrible at airband reception by the way. ... show more
