This thing is just unreal. I live out in the country and decided to go on a walk with my dog. Went outside and flipped this thing on at night and then changed the zoom quality by rotating the end of the lens... This thing is like having Human Cheat Codes. I was able to see animals all around in the fields roaming... I then saw a family of deer out in the distance and decided even though it was pitch black the dog and I would go on a Walkabout to see how close we could get. It was unbelievable... Not only did I locate the deer in pitch black but I walked over to where they were and then made a "Tssss" sound and they started running. This is probably the best investment I've ever made. This device could save your life or others lives. It detects foot prints... You can see how long ago a vehicle was probably on... There is so much you can learn by the heat of an object. I saw where animals took a dump last in the fields... I mean... If there ever was a collapse and an emergency... You could literally win any scenario at night because you have one of these. I use this for night time and very early morning boating to avoid unlighted poles and crab traps. I can run on a plane with no fear of hitting anything and get to my favorite fishing spots at day break and fish them before anyone else does. Easy to use.......I use the black/ white mode for boating.

Bf wanted this but this thing is amazing, u can see in trees where turkeys nest, and driving u can see something in pitch black of the night. He said when u use it u can actually tell the animal that’s there…to me that is unreal. It’s expensive but worth every penny

Don't believe some of the BS reviews about the Pulsar Helion 2 XQ38, XQ50, and XP50... Here's the net/net: I own the PULSAR HELION 2 XQ38F and it is truly an amazing system. Buy it and you won't be disappointed. This is coming from someone who is an optics nut (I have 10 pairs of high end binoculars, Leica, Fujinon, Sig Sauer, Steiner, Image Stabilized, etc.). If you want the best thermo-monocular for the money, the Helion 2 is it. Read on if you want the gory details... IMPRESSIONS: Some of the reviews here are unreal. People will ding a product in their reviews for things not even related to the product itself. BE ADVISED: There is a Pulsar Helion 1 and Pulsar Helion 2, THEY ARE DIFFERENT. The quick tell is the BLUE BUTTON that comes standard with the Helion 2. The reason this is confusing is that the Helion 1 and Helion 2 both use the XQ38F designation. YOU WANT THE HELION 2. The Helion 2 is built like a tank and has been called "A workhorse" on YouTube. I would agree with this opinion. The Helion 2 is built for all kinds of environments and will be a durable, reliable, and sturdy unit whether you're in the cold or the heat. The unit is solid, well made, and extremely easy to use. The new magnesium alloy chassis really makes a difference and this alone is why you want the Helion 2. FUNCTIONALITY - 5/5 When you compare the Helion 2 to other units on the market, it's heads and shoulders above the competition. The Helion 2 has the ability to record video, take photos, and stream to your mobile device in real time over WiFi, which is a HUGE bonus. The streaming capability allows you to focus while a spotter provides you situational awareness. The IMAGE BOOST feature (should be enabled by default but isn't) should be enabled straight away and really bumps image quality (that is clarity, image detail, and field of view). For example, at night I can literally see small insects flying around at 50-60 yards, it's THAT sensitive. Next the unit sports a 50 Hz refresh rate which is outstanding and you'll really notice the difference if you compare it to other thermal monoculars. Other thermal monoculars tend to have refresh rates much slower and it makes a big difference in viewing a subject. In fact, it can downright frustrate you. Last but not least, the removal battery packs are a total competitive differentiator in the market and really make owning of these a blast. The stock battery gets a crazy 9 hour battery life (and it clocks in right around this if not in extreme temps) and you can get a monster IPS14 battery that gives you an insane 20 hours of battery life (which I own and highly recommend you get if you're going to buy the unit). CONNECTIVITY - 2/5 Every product has an achilleas heal and connectivity is the Helion 2s. I make my living as an engineer, I'm super technical, and I even I grew frustrated at how ridiculous it was to update the software on the Helion 2. I was able to work out exactly why people have issues and it boils down to a frustrating undocumented series of steps you have to take on your phone to get the unit to update. Once worked out, it works fine, but until you actually do it, you have to tinker with it until you get it to work consistently. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for a $3000 Thermal Imaging device. With that said, it is quite literally THE ONLY gripe I have with the unit and once you figure it out, it won't be too bad. I would post the steps to get the update function working more consistently here but given mobile phone code variances (IOS/Android), a person's respective technical proficiency (or ineptitude), and liability, I have decided to forego placing the specific steps to get it to work in this review. There is plenty of discussion about it on the Internet, much of it drivel and non-sense, so if you can't get it to work, JUST CALL PULSAR, THEY WILL WALK YOU STRAIGHT THROUGH IT. IMAGE QUALITY - 5/5 Here again, given the price of this unit compared to overpriced junk from FLIR, Pulsar just pulls away from the competition. I have Flir devices and Pulsar is just simply better. The 35mm lens on the Helion 2 XQ38 is excellent and provides a nice wide Field of View (FOV), in fact, it's better than the XQ50. If you want to see a bit further, you can always use the 50mm lens, but I honestly don't think 95% of people will need it. The XQ38 allows for more image information with its nice wide FOV. The XQ38 allows you to see up to 1350m and the XQ50 allows you to see up to 1800m. Depending on your application, you may need more distance so consider this as the number 1 differentiator between the two units, otherwise, they are nearly identical. Image Quality is just incredible, the image is crisp, it's clear, color is fantastic, and thermal sensitivity per the NOISE EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE (NETD) rate of 40 mili-Kelvin (mK). THIS IS VERY LITTLE NOISE and thus the image you see is BEAUTIFUL. Trust me on this, it's extremely good looking and you'll notice it straight away. I have seen units with even lower mKs (lower is better), but at this price point, it's fantastic. The only reason I won't give it 5 stars is because I think Pulsar should have provided more than 8 heat overlays (don't get me wrong, this is plenty for 99% of people). This isn't a ding or knock as much as it just keeps it from being almost perfect in my opinion, especially for the price point and overall setup of the unit. Honestly I would have expected to pay closer to $4,000 for the viewer at this resolution and contrast. DO NOT go cheap on the viewer resolution and contrast whatever decision you make! Many people make this mistake and totally forget that the viewer is in fact what you're looking at 99.9% of the time, so regardless of the lens and imaging capabilities; you don't want to be staring at a subject with a crap low res display. TRUST ME, you'll kick yourself if you don't listen to this advice. I challenge you to go check out lower resolutions and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. 1024x768 sounds like low res today, but you're looking at a thermal image, so it's actually quite good for the application. The higher the resolution of the viewer, the more battery it consumes, so it's a nice balance. ERGONOMICS - 5/5 I really like the ergonomics of the unit as it slides right into my hand perfectly with the IPS7 battery. When you use the IPS14, it won't be as comfortable but you'll get the crazy 20 hour battery life, so you'll learn to live with it, believe me. The unit feels good in your hands and feels like a quality piece of gear. It truly feels like a standard issue military unit (and in some places it probably is!). It's just a nice feel in your hands. Reaching the buttons is easy but will take some time to get used to. The tactile queues the buttons have are easy to get used to and you'll have it down in about an hour or so. The unit can get a bit warm, but it's not anything crazy. OVERALL - 4/5 The only reason it gets a 4 and not a 5 is the crappy connectivity. I believe Pulsar used a cheap WiFi NIC to save some money and keep the cost down and unfortunately, it was a mistake. The unit is nearly perfect, it's really that good, if you don't believe me, go check out some of the reviews on YT. Once you have it connected to a phone and you see how well it works, you'll be pretty impressed. If you're impatient and just want things to work, this unit may piss you off and you may end up returning it which is a shame given how incredible it is. So be advised, getting it connected is not hard once you understand what's going on and what's needed, but if you aren't willing to be patient, go with another brand. If you're considering the Chinese made Zeiss, I WOULD NOT LET THE CONNECITIVITY ISSUES OF THIS UNIT PUSH YOU INTO THAT UNIT, IT IS SIMPLY NOT AS GOOD. The mobile app needs work and while StreamVision 2 is pretty good, it could be greatly improved. Given how crappy some of the FLIR systems are at about the same price, you will be thanking yourself for going with the Pulsar. Highly recommended... ... show more
