  • fine overal

It does the job but I wish the shaft was made out of a stronger steel, mine is already banged up.

  • Solid chuck
Color: 1/2" Size: 1MT Style: Chuck
Works as advertised. My only real complaint is that it is pretty beefy. I use it on a Wen pen lathe, and probably should have gotten the 3/8 in version. I've had to finagle things to get the chuck and but to fit on the end if the piece is longer (10" or so). But, no stars off for this - mostly I'm just trying to do things on my little lathe that I probably shouldn't! The chuck itself is well built and seems like it will hold up more that adequately for my needs. ... show more

  • Works well enough at this price
Color: 1/2" Size: 2MT Style: Chuck
Works well enough. The Morse taper is a little too big and doesn't eject from tailstock easily. I have to run tailstock out and tap it out

  • Despite Amazon's "guaranteed fit" this will NOT fit the Shop Fox 1704 lathe
Color: 1/2" Size: 2MT Style: Chuck
Probably a decent chuck. Made in China. I bought it for my benchtop lathe after reading on the lathe description that it was a guaranteed fit. Obviously nobody tried very hard to confirm (including me.) The Shop Fox requires a Morse Taper #1 quill, this chuck has a Morse Taper #2. My loss for trusting Amazon. My only excuse is that there's no brick and mortar store within 100 miles. ... show more

  • Great addition as lathe accessory
Color: 1/2" Size: 2MT Style: Chuck
I had been making a lot of tool handles for rasps, files and other handled tools by first free-hand drilling tine holes into my stock before turning. Even clamped for the drill press, the hole never worked out centered or perfectly straight into the handle stock. The obvious solution is using the lathe to drill a perfectly aligned and centered hole. This chuck facilitates that. Although it is a little long for my midi-lathe (I'm ordering a bed extension soon), it is certainly fine for chucking drill bits and drilling horizontally into a handle that is 6-10" long. The machining on the chuck is exceptional and well-balanced, no wobble or vibrations. The clamping action is smooth and the weight and size provides plenty of heft and holding power. The chuck key is properly geared (I prefer over keyless chucks) and delivers plenty of torque to hold the bit securely. The maximum bit size is 1/2" and the holding wedges equally converge on the bit to keep it centered. The #2 Morse taper is precisely milled and no slippage occurs once you give a minor hand push. The depth of the hole can be determined by watching your tailstock spindle markings, if you have them. I haven't figured out at which end, the head stock or tail stock, to mount the chuck for drilling. In the headstock, the drill is spinning into the wood; in the tail stock the would is spinning and the drill is being driven into it. I suppose it doesn't matter but I prefer the latter. Somebody smarter than me can deliberate on it. This is a good purchase and I wasn't disappointed, as you can sometimes be with sight-unseen online purchases. I couldn't be more pleased and the price was acceptable. I will be extending the use of the chuck to hold small pieces like dowels and small stemmed turnings. ... show more

  • Overall this has been a decent lathe drill chuck
Color: 1/2" Size: 2MT Style: Chuck
Admittedly I am not doing any heavy drilling with my lathe. For that I will use my drill press obviously however there are times it easier to do light to moderate boring with (usually) forstner bits while the wood is still on the lathe. Or i will also drill pilot holes with it before it goes to the press for larger drill bits. Somehow when I go from the lathe to the press if I do not drill a pilot hole while still on the lathe I seems to get just a tad off center on the press...drives me nuts so this helps to have a pilot hole already dead center. I do not push it mainly because my lathe is a midi lathe and I could stall the motor with a forstner bit if I were to try and push it. I see some people have had these fail and if mine ever did I would update this review but at the time it works as a chuck should. Seems to be of sufficient strength and build to do what I am doing. To me if you were doing any boring or drilling that was more than even moderate duty I will opt to the press since it is built for that. Simple light drilling and boring this is fine. ... show more
