  • ... of the Wen drill press and have been very pleased with it so far
Style: 2.3 Amp, 8 Inch Drill Press
I purchased the 8-inch version of the Wen drill press and have been very pleased with it so far. I had seen it in the big-box store prior to purchasing it here on Amazon and I am glad that I purchased it on Amazon, it was $27 cheaper than at the store. So, that's pretty awesome! The overall construction is very good. The unit is nice and heavy, the base is super solid and supports the weight of the head of the unit very well. All of the castings are smooth and do not have any cracks. The baseplate might be small for some, but it's just about right for me. I plan on building a small fence for the bed so it will be extended anyways. Unfortunately, the bed of my unit does have some rust on it straight out of the box.(pictures) While it's a little bit of a bummer, it doesn't affect the performance of the machine. But it would be nice if it was rust free. I do have one slight complaint and it's mostly just because the lack of a feature. I am not a huge fan of how the depth guide works, the two nut setup is kind of a challenge to get right because the space is so tight to get a wrench in there. The nuts on my drill press were so tight, I had a hard time getting them loose in order to adjust the depth. If there was an alternate way to set the depth, or perhaps if the guide was moved outward a little from the head of the unit, that would make it easier to adjust. Once I freed the nuts, they have become a little easier to move, but the gap between the nuts / depth guide-rod and the head of the drill press is a little tight, so it does make getting the fingers in there a bit tight. It's doable though, just not ideal. Also, I do wish you could lock the drill press into a down position if you'd like, but it's not possible on this unit. Which I suppose is asking a bit much for something in this price range. I think you ptobsbly could add a nut at the bottom of the depth guide to act as a "lock" but other than that, it's not possible. All of the dials, nuts, bolts, belts and springs are extremely tight and adjusted just right. It's super sturdy as well as quiet, and it seems like it will serve it's needs very well. I would say it's worth the purchase. Especially for the price! ... show more

  • Needs setup; Great for home or hobby
Style: 2.3-Amp, 8-Inch Drill Press
Got this recently as part of a package deal (with the WEN 1x30 belt and disc combo sander) for hobbies and general home use. It is quiet, easily operated and has the speed adjustments I need for my stuff at home. It came needing assembly with the needed almost all the tools, and very clear directions for getting this done. Parts made of exposed metal came treated with either oil or cosmoline (smells soooo good) and these need to be cleaned off. The user manual advises acetone or similar cleaner for this. Setting up out of the box: The user needs to attach the press tower to the powder-coated cast-iron base (using your own wrench), the cast and machined-flat table to the press tower, and the drive assembly to the top of the tower. Once this is complete, the user needs to clean the mating surfaces of the chuck and spindle, then use a hammer to attach the chuck onto the spindle. I did this, tested the trueness of my chuck assembly, and discovered some wobble. A couple more medium whacks with the hammer, and the chuck was set nice and true. The table on mine was not squared to the drill bit axis. I used a long Philips screwdriver stuck in the chuck, handle side down, with a small carpenter's square, to get the left-to-right (X-axis) alignment correct. The indicators for degrees of tilt on the table should not be trusted out of the box. Luckily, the table is square front to back (Y-axis), as this is not adjustable on this model. I then adjusted the pulleys to the lowest speed, easily done with no tools. My impressions: Once set up, I was able to rattle off several small home and hobby projects that had been held up due to needing good, 90-degree holes made, including counter-sinking, using the chuck stop on the left side of the press. Get yourself some small C-clamps for holding work steady on the table (different hardnesses in the wood grain can can make pull your project out of alignment) and supply your own work light to shine on the project area, as one is not included with this model. *For the money* this is a good little beginner drill press that has met and, in some cases exceeded, my expectations. If you want more bells, whistles and convenience, spend more on another more expensive model. For occasional home and hobby uses, this is a great little press. ... show more

  • Good value - fairly basic
Style: 2.3-Amp, 8-Inch Drill Press
I don't use a drill press very often so I didn't want to invest a ton of money into getting one. This one fits the bill. I have used it a couple of times and it came in very handy. I bought some carbide tipped hole saw bits and used it to cut a perfect square in marble tile. I also used it to drill some mounting holes for some caster wheels. It's fairly basic, nothing fancy. But it does get the job done at a price that was agreeable to me. ... show more

  • Compact yet effective!
Style: 2.3-Amp, 8-Inch Drill Press
This drill press performs exceptionally well. I primarily utilize it for constructing birdhouses, but I have no doubt it excels in other applications as well. The assembly process was quick, taking only 5 to 10 minutes, and the instructions were straightforward and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this drill press to anyone engaged in small woodworking projects as a hobby. ... show more

  • Great value and really nice upgrade for a hobby drill press
Style: Keyless Chuck (1/64" to 1/2" Capacity)
I really don’t know why I waited this long to upgrade my 20 year old drill press with a keyless chuck. This makes the frustration of doing multiple drill change outs much more pleasant no fumbling for a key ,looking for the key…. Look Ma no key !!!! The WEN chuck is really well made over and above hobbyists standards. You can grab really small drill shanks and it opens up to 1/2 “ . I would buy this product again it’s a “It’s a no brainer up grade for older keyed chuck machines. ... show more

  • Intuitive set up and operation.
Style: 2.3-Amp, 8-Inch Drill Press
It's heavy for its size and that's a plus. First use was flawless - drilling a 1/32" hole to a depth of 1/8" to modify and repair a camera part. One more similar repair and the drill press will have paid for itself. This unit replaces a Harbor Freight drill press that refused to give up its chuck wobble. The WEN's chuck is perfectly aligned and creates precise holes. It's also quieter than the HF unit. ... show more
