  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Best way to replace the center screw
Style: 1" x 8tpi Pattern Name: 3" With Screwchuck
The center screw is hard to find, will basically have to get it from them unless you can find a machine shop or specialty screw place. The easiest way to get around this is to get a 5/16 or 3/8 tap set from Lowes. Can easily tap the center to a extremely common hanger screw so you don't ever have to worry about it. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Just received...measurements for those interestedd
Style: 1" x 8tpi Pattern Name: 4" Without Screwchuck
Just received. This arrived in a small "Sealable" plastic bag within a small box, within a bubble-wrapped mailer envelope. No apparent damage to the faceplate. Yes, the box contains the moniker "Made in China" for those interested. I will be using this to make a Longsworth Chuck for my lathe, so I haven't used it yet. So - some measurements for those interested. This 4" faceplate turned out just about dead-on 4" (within one hundredth of an inch or so) diameter. The 'flats' where you put the wrench/spanner in order to tighten/loosen the chuck from the lathe appeared just about right on 1 1/4" inches wide. This just so happens to fit my wrenches supplied for my Grizzly lathe faceplate.. Thickness of the 'plate' of the faceplate is about 7/16"/ The thickness of the supporting flange is between 9/16" and 5/8". Some of the reviews I read talk about using a #12 screw, but I found that a #10 screw actually is a better fit and sits in the screw recess just right. A #12 screw actually sits a bit 'proud' of the faceplate and this 'proud' section doesn't actually provide any holding power. The one drawback I found is that when I screw this faceplate completely onto my headstock spindle, I find that it sits so far in that a small (1/16" or so) of my headstock threads sits 'proud' of the faceplate. Not complaining, since the more the faceplate sits to the left on the spindle the more stable, but to make sure that this works well, I am going to have shim with a spacer or washer of some sort. A shim or washer with an inside 'hole' large enough to pass over the spindle and threads before screwing on the faceplate. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Works as intended
Style: 1" x 8tpi Pattern Name: 3" Without Screwchuck
Obviously this is a pretty straightforward product. This is the first face plate I have bought as the 2 used lathes I purchased came with their stock cast iron face plates. Pros: 1. I don’t have the equipment to say there’s no run out, but when used and then mounting to my lathe Chuck the runout is minimal-none existent. 2. I really like that it has 8 screw holes compared to the stock 4. I feel this really helps keep the piece secure and minimize ware on the screws. 3. And maybe this should be number 1… but being that this is steel and I have been using short deck screws which have 2 small bumps on the bottom (to prevent the screw from wanting to back out of decking) which basically tore through one of my stock face plates, this face plate survives. There is some marring from the screws but it isn’t destroying the face plate. I would have switched screws by now, but the screws I had bought survival for this use ended up shearing off and causing the piece to have embedded nails which caused me to give up on the piece I was working on. Can’t really think of any cons, even though this isn’t something amazing that reinvents the wheel it does do what it’s supposed to. I guess if it was a little cheaper, that would be nice. My next purchase will probably be a face plate ring so I can try to use it with my lathe Chuck and remove my Chuck less often. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and well made
Style: 1" x 8tpi Pattern Name: 2" without Screw chuck
If you’re a wood turner who makes bowls, you can’t have too many chucks. If I had a big budget I’d have several Nova chucks, a vacuum chuck, a Cole chuck, and other dedicated chucks, but like most hobbyists, my budget is limited- at least for now. I rely a lot on temporary jam chucks and glue blocks made from construction softwood, which are attached to small and inexpensive faceplates like this one. At roughly $18 for a 2” model, this is cheap enough that I can have several on hand, each with its own dedicated temporary wood chuck. I can also use it, with the appropriate threaded center adapter, to make custom tailstock supports for turning odd objects. It’s a well made piece at a good price. ... show more

I just purchased a new lathe and am in the process of making several fixtures to use with my lathe. This faceplate will be used for one of the fixtures. It works great and is economical enough in price so that I can keep this permanently attached to one of the fixtures. I will purchase additional faceplates as I add additional fixtures. ... show more
