  • Good Bang for the Buck!? UPDATE - not so much
Model: 4-Channel
I just gave this to my teenage grandson to learn about audio. Installed it on a Win 10 64bit PC with the latest Win 10 updates and cannot get decent audio from it. It worked fine (see below) on my Win 10 32 bit (Current version in March) system. Audio now starts slow & distorted & speeds up & slows down. Weird problem, which sounds like a bit rate or buffer problem. I adjusted all of the above. There is no specific driver for this device, so you have to use the Windows generic. I ended up plugging it into a SoundBlaster x-fi device's line-in and it works as expected. Problem is the USB interface. Its not reliable. I'm embarrassed to have given this to my grandson & spent a half-day trying to troubleshoot it. ALPOWL F-4A Mixer Review 21.03.02 I paid for this device and will receive a rebate after my review. Without the rebate, I WOULD keep this device for use in my Sound Lab. Final Recommendations - - Good Bang for the Buck for a starting user. I will probably get one for my Grandson to experiment with. - Sound quality was better than expected. Quiet and no hum experienced. Thought this might be a problem with the plastic case - but no issues. - Documentation is typical of these low-cost products... No on-line resources found. - Makes a decent Mic Preamp - input source for your PC. Plug & Play for Win 10. Mics are mixed as MONO, so you cannot pan 1 left and 1 right. - Effects are disappointing for sound production, but fun to play with. - USB and BLUETOOTH functions are much better than expected. - Powered via 5V USB power supply or from your PC USB port. Detailed Review --- Quick delivery via Prime Well packed in the box - Foam box inside cardboard. Included - - F-4A mixer - 2A USB power supply - 3Ft USB mini cable - Printed Manual Initial impressions - Out of the box - At its price point, what I expected. - Plastic enclosure is sufficient with rubber feet. Sturdy. Initial power-on. LEDs are bright. Knobs have a good feel - just enough tension. However, 2 had rough spots - I pulled them out slightly and problem solved - must have been rubbing on the surface. Manual is typical - translated to English and incomplete - - USB/PC button on back is not included - Press IN to use the Thumb Drive, OUT for PC interface. - Player - No details on how to use. .. Play/pause & FFD/REW skip are obvious, but not the Modes. ..USB - will play the USB stick, but no menu capability, so you need a known playlist. This will PLAY MP3 AND WAV files!!! That's a pleasant surprise. ..Bluetooth pairs easily with a voice status and plays well. FFD/REW work for file skips, but Play/Pause does nothing. This is not a great problem, since you will probably use your phone/tablet to choose & play files. .. Recorder - creates a folder called JL-REC on the thumb drive and records sequentially named files ex.: File0001.MP3, at 128kbps. Level is a bit low, but it works well enough. This is not a Production sound board so I am surprised that it has recording capability at all. Good move! You probably want to start with a fresh thumb drive so you can find your recorded files with the player. Not a problem if your playback is from your PC. Observed Performance & Testing - I've been doing live sound & event recording for over 25 yrs. I fed the F-4a mixer to my workbench Mackie CFX16 mixer via both balanced and unbalanced 1/4" cables so I could gain it up and hear the output detail. Playback samples include: a High res version (320kbit) MP3 of Hotel California Live from "Hell Freezes Over", my default Soundcheck song; and a 48kbit live .WAV recording board mix from a Behringer X32 Primary inputs are combo XLR and 1/4 inch. Include switchable Phantom Power. Button is labeled +48v PAD. Does NOT seem to pad the inputs. Mic Preamp is very clean for this class mixer, although not as hot as I would like with a dynamic mic. I tested Shure SM57, SM58, Nady SP-4C and a venerable EV 635. I tested with condenser mics requiring Phantom power. This board generates 49.4v Phantom without a mic load- above the 48v standard. adding an AKG C3000, voltage dropped to 48.7v. Still a little high. Given a 5v USB power supply, that was amazing. It's totally quiet - no additional hum or hiss. The AKG was unexpectedly VERY hot through the mic Preamp, as compared to the 4 dynamic mics. An Audio Technica AT813R Condenser was more reasonable, but still hotter than the Dynamic Mics. My AKG C410 Headset mic worked well, but needs a little more EQ that this board can provide, but is acceptable. Signal level was good. Playback with the internal player is VERY GOOD for this class device. Headphones - Main and "phone" must both be turned up to use headphones. Gain is good and Audio quality is very good into Sony MDR-7506 headphones - THE studio standard headphone. Specs - Manual is wrong - Bass & Treble only, no Mid. Freq response is not to 130K and 200k. Signal to noise IS very good. I did not hear any unreasonable background "electronic" noise or hiss with the Channel gains, Channel levels and Main turned fully up. Indications are, short of setting up the test bench & spectrum analyzer, that this is Very Good to Exceptional for this class board. That was a pleasant surprise. PC Interface - Plug and Play immediately set it up in Win 10 as "JieLi-BR21". Immediately recognized as an output device and worked as expected. Playback - Channel 3/4 to the main mix - Press the ST/USB button to switch from the USB player to PC. Gain & EQ controls work as expected. This is NOT typical in my experience. You usually don't have gain & EQ on the PC playback interface. Stereo separation was good. Recording - this was not easy - 45 minutes later... Final Win 10 settings - MME and Windows Sound Mapper - which must recognize the JeiLi-BR21 device. 48KHz bit rate, not 44.1KHz - as a CD. Others have commented on scratchy noisy feed to the PC. I started this way and was becoming disappointed. However, setting the Bit Rate and experimenting with the Win 10 sound settings fixed this: ..Board must be set for "PC" on the back button and PC on the input Mode (display). ..Input must be set for USB on Chanel 3/4, as above. Once I found the correct settings, it worked well with the Win10 default driver for Audacity and Presonus Studio 1. Watch the levels of Chan 3/4, as you may get feedback / echo as sound routes (loops) to / from the board when recording. Watch tir Monitor settings in your recording software. Effects - This was the weak point. Selecting EFX for either of the Mic channels adds in "Delay" and/or "Repeat". Delay starts at about 1/4 second at the lowest level - too late, in my opinion. Repeat starts at 1 and goes to many. EFX are either IN or OUT. I likely won't be using these. NOW, that said, for playing around, these can be fun. If you change the delay with signal going through, it will lower or raise the pitch while stretching or shortening the sound. Think of stretching a rubber band while you pluck it. You can get some cool effects here. They are fed both to the Thumb Drive recording and to the main output. ... show more

  • Super quiet compared to others
Model: 4-Channel
I own a dance studio and have always used mixers plugged into an amp. I was looking for a bluetooth enabled one so gave this a shot. I don't know why but the volume is much softer than other pro sound I've used in the past. I have the volume on 10 (on both the line in and the master) sometimes whereas for my other mixers, it would be a 4 and 5. If turn up the gain I get a better result but it says its "clipping" even though I know my speakers can handle it. Not sure how professional this mixer is but my staff like the Bluetooth option so we'll keep it for now. ... show more

  • This is a perfectly adequate product for the price
Model: 4-Channel
Is this a very good mixing board? The answer, sadly, is not yes. I needed a cheap mixer for podcast recording after my Behringer's headphone jack gave up the ghost, so I ordered it because it was VERY cheap. You know what, I got exactly what I paid for. The sound quality is at best mediocre, the build is cheap plastic and the headphone jack on THIS board ain't great. All that being said, it is fine. It is a cheap mixer and sounds like I cheap mixer, I will keep it once I get my new "good board", it will work fine for a travel mixer or small live events. I got exactly what I paid for, and that is fine. If you need cheap, so-so sounding mixing board and don't expect anything else, this product is perfectly adequate for the price. ... show more

  • Update! It's a harsh noise and heavy bass drum machine!
The media could not be loaded. Okay! What a little machine! The knobs are okay...But the machine itself isn't bad at all! Does a feedback loop beautifully! It makes pretty good Ambient noise/harsh noise/industrial noise. For the price you can not go wrong with this. I do plan on getting a better mixer. But, if you wanna do what I'm doing for cheap. Then you can't go wrong with this mixer. ... show more
