This is the ultimate Swiss army knife for the analog guitarist. Consisting of two independent RAT units, each Deuce tone channel can be used separately, in stereo, or cascaded together for the most insane distortion on earth. As if that weren't enough, each channel is switchable between three RAT settings. Channel A features the Vintage RAT, Turbo RAT, and Dirty RAT, while Channel B gives you the choice of Vintage RAT, Turbo RAT, or Clean RAT tones. The Clean RAT is a clean boost, a tone only available in the Deuce tone RAT. That's like having six RAT pedals in one unit. Used separately or cascaded, you have fifteen RAT tones at your feet. The Deuce tone RAT features the legendary RAT Filter control. Turn it to the right to roll off brittle high-end frequencies. Having trouble cutting through the mix? Turn the Filter down and allow the natural brightness of your instrument to shine through. The Distortion and Volume controls dial in the perfect amount of gain while keeping the level consistent with your clean tone.     • A good distortion that can be turned into an exceptional bass distortion with very little effort
Style: RAT2
This is the distortion I've been looking for ever since I started playing bass, and it costs about half of what I paid for my other distort pedals. First off, this review is for bass. It's great for guitar as well, but that's not what I primarily use it for. Right out of the box, this pedal gives you a mean crunch. The bass output will quickly distort it so you have to leave the distortion at about 10% unless you just want fuzz. Turn the filter to about 70-80%, and you get a nice crunch without fizz burying the low end. However, this pedal's real strength for a bassist comes once you've modded it. If you look up the Ruetz Mod, you'll get find instructions for how to very easily turn this into a truly wonderful pedal with lots of character. Basically, by cutting one of the filter resistors out of the circuit you can give the pedal much more headroom and cause it to preserve even more low end. With this mod, the distortion is actually usable for bass throughout the entire range because the deep tones don't immediately get blown away. This gives you a whole lot more room to dial it in. And, if you don't like it, just solder that resistor back in place and it's good as new. If you, like me, are a bass player that has been trying to find a REALLY good distortion sound for a long time and just weren't getting it from other options, give this a try. Also, if you have an overdrive laying around you can use it to put a boosted signal into this bad boy for even more tonal options. ... show more

    • Practically unplayable due to immense hum.

I was very excited, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this pedal once I ordered it. However, upon first hooking it up to my pedal board, there was an insane amount of hum coming from the pedal. This was pretty much straight outta the box, so all controls were at noon. I was running it through my 65 Deluxe Reverb, and no matter how many cables I switched out, or different amp settings and configurations I tested, nothing was working. Turning down the volume was the only solution, but unless I barely wanted to hear anything coming from the pedal at all, the hum would still be immense. Honestly, the pedal is unplayable at this point and I already requested a refund. I’m still on a journey to find a decent distortion, and this is my second time returning a loud and poorly made distortion. ... show more

    • AN ESSENTIAL PEDAL FOR A SERIOUS GUITARIST

For a pro, the Rat requires no introduction. For the uninitiated, I hope that something I say will motivate you to give it a listen. You could go through a slew of pedals before finding one that accomplishes everything the Rat does. It's an old, reliable friend. Not merely an ally. A reliable friend along your guitar journey. It's a distortion pedal par excellence. If your amp's too hot and you have too much headroom, it'll tone things down a bit to that perfect spot that other pedals might leave you seeking. If you need a bit more go juice, it's there to give you that extra kick whether for leads or rhythm. Depending on your setting, it has the range to provide overdrive to one side and fuzz to another, but it would be a disservice to rely on it for either, because far too many good pedals exist to handle those tasks. This is a pedal that will grow with you. Any beginner shaking her or his head over the complexity of guitar will look at all the things you require to be a competent musician and while the list of things you'll need is considerable, it won't be too long before the Rat makes its appearance among the list of vital necessities. Yes, there are other Rat-like pedals out there. Indeed, there are several brothers and sisters in the Rat family of pedals. None can do more than this. I own 4 whiteface rats and a WF reissue. Been using them since 83 as a full time musician. I only use rat pedals for soloing. I always wanted more headroom and perhaps more bass or "filter" as they call it. This solves the problem, as it will run from 9-18 volts. I use a 12 v supply on it, and do not need the "fat" switch as the headroom allows for lower frequencies. Natural compression, socketed IC (installed a well used LM308N), and LED (what the WF has been missing). This will be a classic. Its taller than the WF rat, so you may miss the switch on stage a couple of times before you get used to it. ... show more

I was disappointed when I first received this pedal. I never tried one prior to ordering it, and had high hopes based on other reviews. It took a while for me to dial in the sound I wanted. When I finally found it, my expectations were met and it was well worth the money. This may now be my favorite distortion pedal. It's a versatile pedal that works as a fuzz/distortion/overdrive depending on how you dial in the knobs. Any adjustment made to one knob requires tweaking of the others to find your tone. I set my Distortion to around 2 o'clock, Filter slightly past 12, and Volume at 2 o'clock. These settings will give you a fairly heavy distortion. Crank the Distortion and Filter all the way clockwise, and you get some decent fuzz. Experiment with this pedal and have fun. It won't be spectacular out of the box, but it will be when your find its sweet spots. ... show more
