  • Useful but hard to dial in
More knobs are not always better. In the case of this pedal, the controls are really sensitive, there's a pretty big mid hump that's hard to dial out, and the low end control can make things really boomy, or add a little chunk to the sound. You can do a lot with it, but I struggle to find what it does best, because it doesn't really do edge of distortion well (it doesn't clean up), and it's not a really high gain distortion pedal, but it can just add a bit of tightness, hair metal mids, or thump to a standard OD sound. Basically, if you have your amp set for 70s rock, you can stomp on this and get Motley Crue or maybe Bark at the Moon era Ozzy. Like a tubescreamer, this thing lets a little bit of the clean signal through so you hear the distorted guitar mixed with clean signal. The circuit design is nothing like a tube screamer, but it can work as a substitute ( I think if you wanted the tube screamer sound, the Joyo JF-01 "Vintage Overdrive" Pedal would be better just for simplicity sake and being more of a clone). So it's not bad, but its just not on the level of boutique pedals and their clones. If you get tired of it, give it to your bass player or try it with a bass for an interesting tone. ... show more

  • Versatile and good sounding pedal for little money
The Bad Monkey is a pretty good pedal. I already had Danelectro Cool Cat V2 Overdrive and this is quite similar. The Bad Monkey will give you a good deal more overdrive, however. You can use it as a boost pedal and/or tone shaper thanks to the Bass and Treble controls. As with most overdrive pedals, don't expect metal-type distortion. With my Epiphone Sheraton into a small 5-watt amp, this pedal can get you in and around the level of crunch that Clapton had on Bluesbreakers. And, of course, anything in between that and clean, meaning most vintage blues tones are available in the pedal (though it's probably not going to get you into the most distorted types of more modern blues players). I love my Danelectro but for guitars with lesser output pickups it's hard to get anything beyond the most modest breakup, even when really digging in. So I knew I needed something else but I didn't want to spend $150 on a boutique overdrive pedal. My decision to go with the Bad Monkey was sealed when I saw videos of Duke Robillard using it. If you're looking for solid, tube-style breakup (more than the Danelectro or similar slight OD/boost pedal can deliver) with the added bonus of tone controls with a modest budget, then the Bad Monkey is an excellent choice. ... show more

  • Nice gain booster!
Purchased after reading many reviews online, have to say very pleased. I play through a Mesa Express 5:50 and the gain channel gets a little fizzy at max gain, this really tightens things up and adds tons of sustain. Very warm but not muddy or super bright. I only run this pedal as a grit boost on the gain channel but I run it all the time it's really wonderful as a quiet bass/gain boost. I can't comment on battery life as I always use a power supply on my pedals, but so far I have played 3 gigs with this on my board and I don't think I'll have any problems with it. Plus it's all analog so no digital junk cluttering the signal path of my tube amp. Really helps get that "just a little more" and it's really cheap. What more do you want? ... show more

  • Overdrive without covering tone
This is a nice little pedal when you just want a little edge, but don't want the tone of your guitar covered up. I use it every Sunday as a worship team electric guitar player, and it works great in that setting. You can crank the od up as well for a hotter sound. It's not as raw or powerful as a Tube Screamer, but is a good bang for the buck if you're not a shredder ... show more

  • Way better than I expected! Using to boost already overdriven amp!
I had just bought a Retro-King plexi 50 used and I wanted a overdrive that had a low end boost. The plexi 50 has a lot of low end on its own but it disapears when the bass and drums start. I play the amp with the gain up as high as it will go (sounds kind of like AC/DC) and use the bad monkey to drive it more (kind of like Ride The Lightning). I'm very happy with the results! I have the level dimed, bass set at about 1 o clock, highs at about 9 o clock (the plexi 50 is very bright) and the gain hovers between 1 and two o clock. The tone is never mushy, the notes are clear and bell like. I still works very well when I play extended chords. I've used it on a couple of gigs and got a few compliments on my tone. I could have easily went with a more expensive pedal (green rhino, xotic bb preamp), but all of the video reviews used a clean amp and the overdrives just to add dirt to solos and stuff. I figured for $50 (overnight shipping included) it was worth taking a chance. It's also worth mentioning that I used the mixer output for scratch trax today. It did the trick! Good option if you don't have a bunch of plug ins or a pod or something. Gotta go. Ambien is kicking in. Love, Jarrod ... show more

  • Exceptional pedal - both quality and cost
I really debated which overdrive pedal to get, but when you look at quality (both sound and manufacture) and price, the Bad Monkey is the one to get. I just play along to backing tracks (no public gigging), so I really did not need to spend $100 for an overdrive pedal. I had narrowed my choice to the Bad Monkey and a similar model by Behringer. After watching numerous videos on YouTube, the Bad Monkey was the clear winner (besides that - when Phil X recommends a product it is the one to get...... :) ... show more

  • Perfect for Blues, Classic Rock, Jazz Fusion
This is a classic overdrive sound, for a very progressive price. Cranked all the way, it will give you the classic rock distortion associated with acts like Mountain, Cream, The Who, Free, Bad Company, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. In fact, it's very close to the tone Warren Haynes gets in Gov't Mule. It's very quiet, has the exact sound it advertises, and you can use the dual outputs to feed signal to two amps (ie: one with just overdrive, one with overdrive+effects. If you're looking for metal, keep looking, but if you play blues, classic rock, or jazz fusion, it's well worth the low price. ... show more
