A trip to the ER made me realize how tasty a soda cracker is when everything else is unappetizing and unacceptable. Next question: are the Amazon-brand crackers close enough to "genuine" Saltines to make the modest savings too attractive to pass up? To my surprise, they're close enough--in texture, cohesiveness (holding together instead of flaking into shreds), and taste--to make the $2 Amazon box almost equally enticing Still, maybe it's the psychology of brand loyalty and nothing to do with substantive quality, but the more authentic Saltines struck me as more consistent--from package to package, cracker to cracker--to be worth the few extra dimes. I thought--or maybe the crackers made me "want" to think--that the Saltines were a trifle less flaky, more solid and slightly more salty (face it--that's the only flavor that matters with Saltines), which is all the justification this Premium pack requires to justify purchase. The Amazon brand had a few packages with crackers that tasted salty without satisfying my tongue's need to "feel" the BB's of salt adhering to the surface of one side of each cracker. (I'd almost double the cost if they came with the guarantee of "sea salt" adhering to that side of the cracker.) If salt is an issue for anyone with high blood pressure, note that these list as one of the ingredients the additive Niacin, which has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels in controlled studies.
