  • Excellent little grinder from espresso to French Press
I've been working on my coffee and espresso game for 15 years and over that time I've used many good grinders. The grinder is the most important part of making good coffee or espresso so you want to spend a fair amount for something that will provide high quality grinds. This little grinder delivers a tremendous amount of value. Read on to hear my thoughts... Setup: the first thing you need to do is identify your grinder zero point. To do that, you turn the grind adjustment towards the finer settings until the burrs just start to rub and provide slight resistance. This is your zero point and it can be any number on the adjustment dial. Espresso: I used 24 clicks from zero as my preferred espresso setting with my Picopresso. This enabled a fantastic espresso shot that you can see in my photo. I tried 1 click adjustments both finer and coarser and the resulting espresso shot changed very slightly. There is plenty of adjustability in this grinder to grind as fine as you need to for great espresso or even Turkish coffee if that's what you prefer. French Press: I used 56 clicks from zero as my grind setting. This gave a nice coarse grind that worked well in my French press. There was very light pressure while pushing the plunger just how I prefer. The result in the cup was clean and delicious. There were some very tine fines created that gave a nice silky mouth feel. Very nice overall. Summary: I will be using this grinder both at home and while traveling. It's a very small grinder that fits nicely in my backpack so I can enjoy good coffee while on business trips. This grinder has plenty of adjustability for any type of coffee you want to prepare and the price tag is quite reasonable for the build quality and grind capabilities. Force required to complete your grind will vary based upon how fine you are grinding and the roast level of your beans. The force required with this grinder is right in line with any of the other similar hand grinders available on the market today. I believe I will get many years of use from this high quality grinder. ... show more

  • a grind for every brew
this thing delivers on every front. the quality in materials, the dimensions, its capacity to find the best grind possible for the particular brew of choice. all components are made with high integrity, it's well machined and feels good to hold, weighted without being heavy. my hand can fit around the base, just not completely, my fingers don't touch or wrap around. this is fine, i can still hold it well in my hand while working the handle to grind. the one change i might make is to give the cylinder base some texture, like grooves in the metal for easier gripping. but again, i can hold it just fine and the handle spins fairly effortlessly through the grind. this holds way more beans than i ever need usually, but recently i did have some guests and needed to make a bigger pot of coffee, so this would have definitely helped speed that process up just a bit. the burr is optimal. the specifications in grind are seemingly endless. this can be fine tuned to the softest most fine grind for espresso to the most coarse roughly chopped grind for cold brew, this thing can take you there and everywhere in between. when choosing a setting, the knob can be turned through an entire sequence to make another rotation in either direction, be it more coarse or fine. the numbers are good guide lines, but there are more than just 24 variables, trust. finally think i got the best pour over grind style, though to tell you just the number isn't good enough, because i went through two sets of complete rotations to land on what i think works best. again, this thing really fine tunes the grind unlike any manual grinder i've experienced before. makes sense why the price point looks this way once you actually use the product. it's elite. everything is a bit bigger than my old maual grinder, and the knob on the handle doesn't pop off like my old one does (really helps space save in small areas) but that's ok, i'm willing to trade that bit of extra space for a grinder that performs this consistently well. pretty pleased. ... show more

  • Exquisite. Wonderful grind, and a bit awkward to adjust
Hard to find a place to start, so I'll first say this is just a joy to use. I've had this in use for several weeks now, and found it takes about 140-150 turns to grind a full load of beans, usually get in done in about a minute and a half. The grind ends up somehow being airy, likes its fluffy - likely I should moisten the beans before grinding. It's just fun to use. It's so perfectly balances, it's easy to marvel at how smoothly the handle glides over the unit when turning. The machining of this unit is incredible. I did have problems adjusting the grind coarseness, and in a way I still do, I haven't master the setting. But I have mastered tearing apart the unit and reassembling to get the desired coarseness - see photos. It is a premium product, but I have to say I think the final grind is much better than the electric grinders I've been using, and increasingly I'm using this for my espresso. Worth the premium price, simply excellent. ... show more

  • Seems solid and sturdy and it works well
I ordered the Grindcraft Premium Manual Coffee Grinder mainly to have as a backup, in case my electric grinder fails or in the event of a power outage. After a little experimentation, I have determined a grind setting that produces an excellent cup of pour-over coffee (my usual method). The Grindcraft grinder seems solid and works well. I like the wood knob which is comfortable in my hand. I am able to hold the grinder securely in my left hand while grinding thanks to the knurled section above the output container. The grinder is nicely finished and sleek looking. I had never heard of Grindcraft as a brand, and the included generic user manual didn't mention Grindcraft at all. There was no address, website, warranty, support or contact information provided in the manual. The manual wasn't even specific to this particular grinder as it showed information related to a 12 position grind regulator, not the 24 position regulator found on this model. ... show more
