My oldest (7 years old) just started getting into basketball. So I wanted to see about getting him a more legitimate indoor hoop (as opposed to the small ones you hang over a door). Did a lot of research, and this one form Mayfire seemed like a winner. Other brands seemed to have a handful of consistent reviews about cheap materials, poor construction, defects, and lack of good QC. While the Mayfire just appeared to be better constructed. Delivery was super fast. Even though Amazon was projecting upwards of a week. It arrived at my door in 4 days (2 of which were the weekend). The shipping box was nice and compact, but not at the expense of security. It was packaged incredibly well. Plenty of bubble wrap on all the parts to protect everything during transport. Unboxed and assembled it this evening, and it went together perfectly. No missing hardware, and fairly good instructions. It's not a complex build, and can easily be done by one person. I didn't notice any defects or dings. Each part has a really nice powder paint/powder coating. The poles are quite substantial, being bigger than I'd expected (a good thing). And while ours will be used entirely indoors, I get the impression that it'll hold up fairly well if exposed to the elements. One thing that might seem a little confusing is that pole (K) slides inside of pole (L). For a second, I thought they'd forgotten a part. But quickly realized poles (L) and (K) are essentially a single telescoping part; which is how you are able to adjust the height. Pole (F) is optional, depending on the configuration you want. What's nice is that the adjustment is super easy. Even if you want to swap out the extension pole (F), every adjustment after initial assembly is tool free. With nice sized thumb knobs securing the whole pole assembly together. As mentioned, pole (L) and (K) are what allow you to adjust the height. To do so, you just remove a cross bolt from pole (L), and then move pole (K) up or down to your desired height. The latter has 6 holes (spaced every 4"), so there's a really wide range of height adjustment available. One thing that I really like is that it provides two ways to fill the base (many other hoops I saw only had one). Yes, you could put sand or water in any base. But this hoop from Mayfire has two unique filling ports. One is on the top of the base, which is smaller and intended for filling with water. The other port is quite a bit larger, and is at the back face of the base. This will surely make it easier to fill with something other than water (e.g., sand). And both filling ports have a nice rubber gasket/seal. Which should ensure that you won't get any leaks. My plan is actually not to use sand or water. But instead, I'll be using horse bedding pellets. I've used these in many other similar applications, and think it is far better than sand or water. Another thing worth calling out relates back to the height adjustment. When looking at the specs on Amazon, something seemed off about the height ranges they claimed when in each configuration. Specifically, when adding the extension pole (F), the height gap was listed as over a foot (6'1" jumping up to 7'3"). That seemed odd given that all the other increments were listed at around 4". Sure enough, I discovered their listing and manual are wrong about the height ranges. I measured each position in both the short and tall configurations, and there is actually a height of 6'5" that was omitted from all their literature/specs. So if anyone is curious about the actual height ranges, I've detailed them below. For clarity, these measurements are from the floor to the rim. Short Configuration - 4'9" (57") - 5'1" (61") - 5'5" (65") - 5'9" (69") - 6'1" (73") - 6'5" (77") Tall Configuration - 6'9" (81") - 7'1" (85") - 7'5" (89") - 7'9" (93") - 8'1" (97") - 8'5" (101") As you can see, the extension pole (F) basically adds 24" to each of the short configuration heights. This was a pleasant surprise. Since the gap of 6'1" to 7'3" was the one thing on-paper about this hoop that I didn't like. Aside from all of the above, the "glass" on this hoop is quite nice. They say it's polycarbonate (the same material as bullet proof glass). Which I've used in other projects, and has proven to be very strong. The rim doesn't have any springs, but is otherwise nicely constructed. The backboard is also the perfect size for an indoor hoop. I thought 33" wide might not be great. But now that I've assembled and used it, it's plenty. I had been looking at one with a 44" backboard. But the tradeoff is that it would have been quite a bit taller as well. Which for an indoor hoop is not as desirable. As the taller backboard means you can't elevate the rim as high. With this Mayfire hoop, in a room with 8' ceilings, you can use it up to the 6'5" configuration. However it's little tight. The last thing I'll mention is the mobility. The wheels on it are nothing special, but it does roll very easily. What's really nice about the modularity of the height adjustment is you can disassemble most everything with no tools. So if you want to move it between inside and outside, it'll be super easy. Overall, I'm incredibly happy with this hoop. Paired with one of those quiet foam basketballs (which are REALLY cool), it'll make for the perfect indoor winter setup in our movie room. I was pleasantly surprised after getting the hoop all set up. For the price, it is really good quality! Building it took around a half hour which isn’t bad at all. My main goal when searching for a hoop was for it to go short enough for younger kids and this thing is perfect for that. The hoop goes down to about 4ft tall so even toddlers can use it. One of the pieces did have a slight defect on it and I reached out directly to the company and their customer service was top notch, they sent out the replacement part immediately. One thing I do recommend after you build it is to fill the base with water if you plan on moving the hoop frequently, but go with filling with sand if you plan on it staying in one place. Once I set all the pieces out, it was rather easy to put together. The base needs to be filled with sand or water (if outside, put a little antifreeze in it with water to keep from freezing in the winter) and the goal is super stable. Easy adjust for different heights. Great buy.
