I was looking for a device to circulate the water in a pond, and I believe that this unit will work well for that. I do wish it just came with the battery backup (which I purchased separately), but oh well. I plan on creating a barge for the pump, solar panel, and battery pack to float on so that it can be in the middle of the pond and not have to have a wire back to shore. I will have to go out and clean it every month or so, but at least it will be mostly self sufficient. ... show more

    • Good for water fountain
I can't speak on how it works for an aquarium but it works good for my small (3.5') water fountain. It's quiet and moves more than enough water. It's small form fits in the small space within my fountain. Lift height of 5.5' is probably a just tad of an overstatement, from my testing, but in my case it doesn't matter as I don't need that much lift. I have no means of measuring the 160GPH. You get two different nozzles- .33" and .51". The adjustable flow rate is nice for finding the sweet spot with my fountains flow. The pump itself is easily cleaned and can be done without tools. Overall, it works great for my fountain. Only time will tell how it will do in the long run. They do offer a 1 year warranty which is nice, just in case. ... show more

    • Everything you need for a solar powered fountain. Sensitive to shading.

I ordered this kit with some expectation that I could use this, somehow, to augment my drip irrigation system this summer. I have a standalone drip irrigation system with a gravity feed for my garden that could use some additional pressure. I haven't found a way to use this - yet - for what I want to do, so this may end up serving its original purpose as a solar fountain, and I'm fine with that too. It has everything I need to do exactly that. The kit came carefully packaged and the hardware seems to be well-made. No sloppy work, and everything that needs to be waterproof is waterproofed. I tried it out right away (before even looking at the instructions) and, well, it helps to look at the instructions. Mostly because the pictures show which tubing parts go where, and why. The solar panel provides enough power to easily power the pump with a vigorous fountain. I quickly learned two things -- 1) the pump housing needs to be completely submerged (although not the fountain part), and 2)the solar panel is very sensitive to shading. In bright sunlight, when oriented fully towards the sun, the pump pushes water extremely well. It does not take much partial shading to drop the pump to a standstill or a trickle. I.e., a few fingers worth of shade, thin clouds, or a few leaves in the way will stop it. When the panel is slowly angled away from pointing directly at the sun, the pump slows and eventually stops. In my experiment it slowed to a stop when the panel was pointing about 75 degrees away from a direct line at the sun. Without tracking the sun, you'll have to find the best angle to align the panel -- which might change from time of day or day of season. Having a battery (which this system does not include) would help eliminate these performance dropouts if it's important to you. You can buy aftermarket batteries of this same brand which are easy to incorporate into your system. There are attachments to create several different types of fountain heads, and they're fun to play with. Keep in mind when you're designing your fountain that you'll need depth of water (to fully cover the pump) as well as width so that the cascading water returns to your water reservoir (or the reservoir will quickly empty itself). If you're using this in a pond or water feature these considerations will already be taken care of. When configured properly, everything works well and I'm looking forward to setting it up this summer. I've heard that birds are attracted to fountains and I'm hoping to set up a birdbath featuring this fountain. Since it's solar powered I don't need any electrical connection and can use it anywhere in the yard. Recommended. ... show more

    • Fairly strong, but the line connection needs work
This pump is nice and strong enough to push water through a drip line and then some. I have some issues I have with this pump, the connector for the line just sits in, there's no screw cap, there's no screw in top, it just literally sits there, so either you glue it in permanently or use some rubber bands to pray that it gets held in place as just a little water pressure from normal use will pop that connection right off. It doesn't look like the listing, but it is strong and it works well enough if you permanently connect the adapter to the unit. ... show more

because I have one of THESE 20W solar panel and pump systems... that I paid $180 for... THIS kit was a great deal at only $90... I use THESE solar pumps for my home-made vertical farms... Also, since I put fishies in the pickup water... I do not use the filter until after the fishy water gets to the plant roots... then, filter the water before it goes back into the fishy water... This way the plants get fertilizer and the fish get clean water on the return... ... show more

    • Out of the box- solar pump good for daytime use only

This solar powered water fountain has a few different ways to set it up. I needed to use the included hose to connect the pump to the fountain in my somewhat large water feature. The main part of the water feature is actually an old water trough for horses and livestock, so it is about 3.5 feet deep in a circular metal container. I found it somewhat difficult to set up the fountain with the flexible hose since it wouldn’t stay vertical on its own. I basically needed to create a little mound of rocks to surround the fountain head which took a bit of time since I didn’t want to drain the water if possible. I finally set it up to my satisfaction, but see that the solar panel directly powers the fountain, and doesn’t store any of the excess power into a battery. There is a battery that can be purchased separately to keep the fountain running at night, but I think it should have been integrated into the original fountain kit. I’ve used other solar panels with integrated batteries in the panel itself so I know it is possible and probably would be worth the extra cost. I guess some people would only need it for daytime usage, but I would like to have it to help oxygenate the water all day and night, not to mention the pleasant sounds of a water feature help me get to sleep. ... show more
