  • Kids love this!!
My four-year-old grandson saw this type of product at a science museum, and he was telling me about it. I found this on Amazon, and surprised him with it. He was thrilled! His six and eight year-old brother and sister also love it, and it provides hours of entertainment for the whole family!

  • I really liked the fun Plasma Ball!
Okay, This plasma Ball by Popular Science. I had one years ago and loved it! This is fun for everyone! So yeah, I was looking forward to this! I got it plugged in and 'warming/charging' up. I had been watching the weather and even wondered if it would arrive before the storms. And it did! So it was plugged in and the power got knocked out. Such is life in the mid-west! Anyway this will be a short review as the Plasma Ball had a short life. They are easily damaged so you should take care with having it plugged into a surge protector. The Plasma Ball by Popular Science - yeah I was a Popular Science fangirl and my dad would let me read the magazine when it came in. I had a lot of fun with my plasma ball when I had one, and before I caused the death of this one it was a lot of fun watching the way the currents moved around! I didn't think beyond my excitement when this came in so I didn't use standard precautions to help ensure the life of this neat light! I would recommend this for anyone interested in the science-learning fun items! And for SURE science teachers! Please don't do what I did, and make sure you plug it into a surge protector. Use only the power source it comes with as any damage to the inner field that houses the currents will also damage your Plasma Ball! These are a lot of fun and make a great science class visual! ... show more

  • Let's Call The Turd That It Is
I really am unclear why people are gushing all over this product, and providing it four, and five star reviews, yet admitting it has flaws. Let's call it what it is; it's a turd. This thing is incredibly small, a nectarine is probably about the same size. The base is made of plastic the globe itself is made of a low quality glass that seems that it will be susceptible to easy breakage. Then you have to provide your own USB power transformer to plug it in with. What happened to providing units with a standard AC adapter wall power unit? Once you get this thing actually working, it is a real disappointment. It cannot be used in a normally lit room. You barely can see it work at all. To get any type of true visual effect out of it you have to turn the lights down low, or off in the room. As everyone here who has commented and is more than willing to admit the large scale more expensive units from back in the '70s, and '80s we're much brighter, and could be used in a regularly lit room. Why do I want this thing that is totally useless? Save your money and buy a better quality product. ... show more

  • Nice functioning plasma globe!
Sound control a bonus!

  • -Control can be feisty, lighter than expected +satisfying visual stim
I've always loved plasma balls and was excited to try this out. Visual sensory stims have been really helpful for calming my ever thinking noggin, and this is a great addition to my space! The device is really light and fairly small. The base is plasticky, and the overall feel had me concerned about quality at first. This little guy works great, however! I like the pamphlet that includes info on how the plasma ball works. The info is concise and easy to read. Hooray for learning! I haven't had much luck with the sound activated mode, but I also haven't blared music or had this near more than a tv. Tapping the table the ball is on does cause enough sound to trigger flickers. Touch mode is definitely where this shines. It doesn't take a lot of pressure and multiple points produce the mesmerizing effect when touched. Very satisfying and calming. One of our cats loves staring at it. The only issue I've encountered so far is the switch not always activing the device right away, especially if I forget to unplug it from an outlet overnight. Overall, this is a nighty little plasma ball! Great for sensory soothing, a bit of scientific fun, or decor. ... show more

  • Not the best plasma ball I've ever owned.
I'll start with the positive: this plasma ball does work, and fairly well. The plasma arcs are a bit frantic / scattered, but the globe is nice and clear, and it gives off a nice glow in general. The size is nice, and the fact that it is USB-powered is quite convenient. Unfortunately, I've had some qualms with this product as well. The sound-reactivity option is present, alongside "on" and "off" – but it could really use a sensitivity dial. You have to position the microphone (which is on the underside of the device) in just the right proximity to audio, so it doesn't stay constantly on or constantly off. It's only really good for reacting to things like hand claps. There is also a bit of the electrode that seems to "drip" down from the center in one place – rather shoddy construction for a first-party name to be attached to it. Only consider this product if you (1) don't mind potential defects, and (2) don't plan to use its sound-reactive properties beyond hand-claps. But if these aren't a problem for you, then this is a good option. ... show more
