Description

Over the last 15 years Pirastro has developed new concepts and ways of constructing strings, had important experiences in string technology and has gained new expertise. During that development phase, they came out with such popular strings as the Obligato®, Evah Pirazzi® and Passione®. Today they have a different knowledge and new techniques at hand to design a nylon core string set. As a result they have newly constructed all of the Tonica® strings except for the E steel wound with aluminum string. These changes result in an overall improved string set. Sound Characteristics The Tonica® has now a livelier and more round sound, which is open and direct with less side noises. The projection and brilliance have been upgraded. This excess of brilliance, however, does not mean that the Tonica® has lost its warmth. The set harmony is better. The response is easier and faster. Playing pianissimo has considerately improved. All bow strokes are possible resulting in smooth crossings from one note to another. Easier right hand articulation and tone attack.

  • Mellow, "Mature" (non-Student) Sound For Such a Low-Cost String
These have a lovely, mellow tone that carries. I particularly love the E string, which is a tricky one in general for squeakiness/tinny-sounding tones in many string sets. The E and G have been my trouble strings (this is pretty common). With this string set, the tone seems consistent among all four strings. I hate to talk another brand down, and I'm not doing this now, but I do need to say that my previous go-to D'Addario Preludes are more difficult (slower response time) and less deep/mature/mellow a sound by comparison. I would still take the Preludes over factory strings, for sure. When pimping out your starter violin, start lower and work your way up to see what really works for your violin and for the sound you want to achieve. These are all comparatively lower-end strings as going up from here significantly on strings probably won't change the quality much - there's only so far you can go on a $300 violin, pro strings or no pro strings. But for my needs and on my starter/student violin these are just amazing. You'll go through the usual constant re-tuning in the beginning...I tune each time I play anyway so this is no bother to me. ... show more

  • My favorite cost effective string out there.
Color: Original Version
Best string I have found for the price. I play outside in Florida everyday and I always go back to these. I have to change strings quite frequently due to the nature of my gig and these strings keep up with tone and cost. Only thing I notice is the A unravels and is the first to go, consistently. But at least it’s consistently. I have found a good rhythm of changing them out is once the A goes change it and the E and then let the G/D loose over night and retune. Then the next time around change all four - so keep an extra A and E handy. It’s tone is quality for not breaking my bank. ... show more

  • Fiddler's Prospective
I'm a bluegrass fiddler. I've been looking for a replacement for Helicores. The Helicores come apart after a month of playing and I have never liked the feel of them. These strings were recommended by a friend. I love them. They feel amazing, sound amazing, and they are a much more "precise" string (intonation-wise) than the Helicores. They respond to fast bowing better. The E string is absolutely fantastic. It really sings. They take a while to stretch and I have to re-tune every time I get it out of the case, but they tune easier and are very forgiving. I don't even use my fine tuners on the G, D, or A. They have been on now for about 2 months and sound just as good or better than they did when I put them on. I will be buying these again. ... show more

  • The best I have used so far
Color: Original Version
As an intermediate begginer, having the E string making noises was kind of demotivating as I thought I was just not playing well. These strings fixed that issue and can tell when I play incorrectly and adjust accordingly which really helps improve my learning. I would definitely recommend this set over other brands I have tried before. ... show more

  • Pirastro Tonica/Gold Passes the Test
I have not yet put these strings on my violin so can't rate this specific set of strings; however, these will replace these exact same strings and I have been happy with them. I am a beginning fiddler and probably not proficient at identifying characteristics if you are an accomplished violinist. I can only give you my own experience. Once the strings "settled" (about 2 weeks) they have held their tuning well. I, personally, like them on my violin and I find that they are comfortable under my fingers, somewhat loud but not overpowering, and they have a nice tone. ... show more

  • Not durable, unraveling after 3 days
Color: Original Version
The A-string is already unraveling (near the tuning peg, which is a weird place) and I barely put these on, about 3 days ago with some light playing/tuning just to break them in. The tone is ok but a little too tinny for the violin. Better tone than cheaper strings, but took forever to stretch/break in, and obviously not durable at all. Very disappointed. Also, I'm realizing too late that returning a whole pack of strings AFTER restringing the violin and breaking them in is a huge hassle, so buyer beware. And for the skeptics, I have been playing for 20 years and put new strings on many, many times, so this was not user error. ... show more

  • Step up for students using steel strings!!!
Color: Original Version
These strings are a huge step up from the cheap-o strings I had been buying from my school violin teacher, no fault to her- she sold us 2 dollar strings because that's what we usually had on us. They sound great for the price, and have a good neutral tone. Definitely compare to the Dominants, but with a cheaper price tag and are a little brighter, which I like as, my violin sounds a bit warm already. Price per performance, I think this string set is worth it for students and those not wanting to break the bank on professional strings. ... show more

  • Bright with Depth
Color: Original Version
These are a nice set of strings if you are a fiddler. They are bright and responsive. Not as bright as metal strings, which I happen to like. A great value and also durable. I've had strings unravel on me and have yet to experience unraveling with these strings. I've played them in a variety of harsh conditions ranging from snow to desert heat and no unraveling. I'm satisfied. ... show more
