  • Great Speakers, Very Affordable!
[3/23/2015, 3 days of ownership] Whilst I am unable to comment on the durability of these speakers, I would like to review the rest of them, as I have had them installed for 3 days now, and have had a decent level of experience with them and different ranges of audio to test how they perform. I will update this review in 3 months time, and then again in a years time to give updates on the quality, durability and to see if anything has changed over the time. These speakers are phenomenal and are available here on amazon for a bargain of a price. They can be found at Crutchfield.com for $79.99 instead of the $43.50 that I picked them up here on Amazon, which is a significant difference, however I do believe that when bought here on Amazon, these do not come with any warranty or support from Pioneer, as Amazon is not a certified retailer of their products, so that, coupled with the glorious customer support and free mounting brackets if needed, from Crutchfield, may be worth it in your situation. You must decide what's best for you. For me, however, it was price mostly. Firstly, I installed these in my 2003 Honda Civic EX Coupe, in the front doors. They fit without any brackets or modifications, however a small bracket wouldn't go unnoticed I'm sure. But they fit pretty well without anything extra. Coupled with some Metra Speaker Connector Harnesses, the installation for these was a total breeze. The cones are made of a nice durable-feeling foam-like material that feels like it would last for a long time and provide a very crisp "oomph" to audio. The speaker surround is made of a nice rubbery material (polymer I believe), that is firmly adhered to the speaker frame and the cone. The magnet had a some nice weight to it, and the spider feels as if it is made from a very solid woven fabric-y material. The tweeter placed in the center is very simple, yet effective and seems to be mounted solidly. The grill included with the speaker is nice, but in my particular case, without modifying the door panel for my vehicle, it's useless, as you cannot leave it on, and regardless, you wouldn't be able to see it anyway, but it does look nice, however it doesn't cover the entire cone of the speaker, just a strip across the tweeter in the center. It's open on the top and the bottom. For specifications, I purchased the 6 1/2" speakers, which are 3-way speakers. They have a 50W RMS power, with a maximum nominal value of 300W. Frequency Response: 35Hz to 31kHz. Sensitivity: 90dB Impedence: 4 Ohms They have a mounting depth of 1 3/4" and a cut-out dimension of 5". As far as audio quality, these things are amazing. They aren't quite at enthusiast level, but I would wager that they hold their own in the mid-tier or so of car audio speakers. I have them connected to a Pioneer DEH-X3500UI head unit that has a built-in MOSFET 50W RMS amplifier, which really brings these speakers to life. I installed these speakers in the front door panels of my vehicle, and installed Rockford Fosgate 6x9" Primes in the rear deck, so when I speak of the audio quality, keep into consideration, that these aren't the only speakers I'm hearing. I also have two factory tweeters installed in the door pillars of my vehicle that I was able to keep wired up with the help of some Metra Speaker Connector Harnesses. These speakers give a satisfying and crisp "punch" to your audio, regardless of taste in genre. The 3-way channels in them really brings out a bunch of different ranges of sound. They don't have the most amazing bass in the world, but they do have just a little bit of a kick to them, but not much, and as such, I would not recommend these for a rear installation, where you'll be needing some real ass to the sound. The tweeters do a great job of bringing out the highs and the mid of the music and the woofers do their job of keeping everything connected. There really isn't much I can complain about with these speakers, as they operate exactly as I had expected. They aren't for any record-breakers, but they will deliver a very nice audio quality, for a very affordable price. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking to replace those pesky factory speakers. ------------------------------------------------------- [8/24/2015, 5 months after ownership] Alright, after having had these bad boys in my car for 5 months (and a day to be exact), I think I can safely say that I am certainly happy with my decision. These are absolutely perfect for the front doors of a car such as mine (2003 2-door Honda Civic). They provide the right amount of low-end, while giving the mids their due and bringing out the highs with the little center-mounted tweeter. They still perform as well as they did when I installed them and everything operates just fine. I still have no amp connected to any of my speakers, although I will be purchasing a subwoofer to install into the trunk soon. These are perfect for some "punch" to your car audio experience. By no means would I consider them audiophile quality, but they are lightyears ahead of the stock speakers you'll find in your factory car. They do, however, cause my windows, or something inside of the door panels to rattle a bit when they're putting out bass, which is a bit frustrating, but that has nothing to do with the speakers and everything to do with the poor sound dampening of the doors in my car instead. Still a solid purchase. -------------------------------------------------------- [5/10/2016, 1 year, 2 months after ownership] Still working great, no issues whatsoever. I would still recommend these. ... show more

  • Sound is balanced again!
This is really a pleasant departure from the Pioneer TS-G1644R speakers I previously had running in the rear. First, a little backstory: My previous Pioneers were only 2-ways, and as a result, had a weakness in the midrange. When it came to bass and highs, they excelled (compared to the other speakers in that price range). But it was a constant annoyance to have to strain my ears to hear the vocals (which were overshadowed and distorted by the bass). At one point, I had the TS-G1644Rs in both the front and the rear, but I upgraded the front speakers to the Sony XS-GTX1642 speakers (which are 4-ways) to lessen the lack of midrange in my music. It helped a little bit, but even when I sat in the front the midrange sounded rather soft. After blowing 2 speakers in the rear, I decided to upgrade the rear this time. I knew I did not want 2-ways anymore, but Pioneer's speakers have exceptional range although not as good as Pioneer claims. (The TS-G1644Rs have a frequency response more like 40-22,000 Hz.) I found these 3-ways and ordered them. These speakers have a frequency response that's more like 37-25,000 Hz. My Sonys in the front have a frequency response of 50-23,000 Hz. These work best when powered with 17W-75W RMS, which makes this just fine for use with most headunits (except for some from Pyramid, Pyle, Legacy, Boss, Sound Storm, Planet Audio, Jensen, Audiovox, Dual, Axxera, and, ironically, Pioneer). It should sound fine with ANY headunit, but they'll sound best within that power range. I just installed these speakers this afternoon, so I can't comment on their durability just quite yet. However, I noticed that the balance of sound is back in my system. I don't have to struggle to hear the words to songs anymore. In addition, the bass is kicking without being muddied by any competing midrange. The highs also sound a bit more detailed and true (although, being a basshead, I don't have too great of an ear for treble). A lot of similar speakers, especially the Polk db651s speakers and the Rockford Fosgate P165 speakers, while at a competing price point around $50, are only 2-way speakers and have more of a chance of having the lows and mids battling each other and causing distortion. Both Polk and Rockford Fosgate are very well-known for making exceptional speakers, but I just wish they would offer some kind of 3-way 6.5-inch speaker (Rockford Fosgate does have speakers like this, but the Prime Series speakers were not what I was looking for, and the Punch Series 3-way has been discontinued, I believe). I'm not saying "the more ways the better" at all. I just feel that an all-in-one speaker like those and these should have at least 3 ways. That way, the speaker focuses on the three key areas of sound (lows, mids, and highs), with each component being dedicated to one key only. Basically, with a 2-way speaker, you have the woofer handling the bass, the tweeter handling the treble, with the midrange being split and shared between the woofer and tweeter. With a 3-way, the woofer handles the lows, the midrange driver handles the mids, and the tweeter takes care of the highs. 4-ways aren't really much better than 3-ways, because you have the woofer's lows, the midrange's mids, and the highs are split between two tweeters. So I guess what I'm trying to say is if you are looking for speakers and are willing to sacrifice a little more dough than would be with entry-level speakers, go with this speaker. The frequency response, even realistically, is always the best with Pioneer speakers. This speaker, like nearly all of Pioneer's speakers, is of the slimmest out there, allowing for installation in even the shallowest of locations. These speakers produce satisfying, full-range sound with full bass, clear mids, and accurate treble. I have always found Pioneer's products to be the clear winner to their competitor's similarly-priced products. I also am running these speakers on a Pioneer DEH-150MP headunit, chosen because it blew away the competitors. I am even considering replacing my Sony XS-GTX1642 speakers with the Pioneer TS-A1685R 4-way speakers... I will update my review if I notice any problems at all! ... show more

  • You get what you pay for!!!!! Good and Bad.
Honestly... they’re ok. Meaning they are not the most amazing speakers, but also not the worst. I feel like my factory speakers put out more bass. My 2000 Jeep XJ did not come with a subwoofer so music now lacks that extra punch. Audio quality is clean at moderate sound levels. The highs start to overtake everything else at higher volume levels (too much treble). I think I’m going to swap these back out with my OEM units. I’ll say this.... DO BUY: if your OEM units are blown, or never packed a punch in the bass department. If you have a subwoofer, only then will these will have the help they need and be as good if not better. DONT BUY: If you’re just looking to “upgrade” your OEM system and your current system works fine (my case). If you don’t have a subwoofer, these speakers just do not have enough punch to deliver a good experience. Save a couple more pennies and invest in a more expensive set. You really do get what you pay for here. ... show more
