  • The Headset that could be really good
So the bad experience started with a lens scratch. The HMD worked pretty good the first time I used it except for scratches on the lens which created for some slight blur. After using the headset the first day, I noticed a lot of discomfort on my head and mainly weight on my nose. Also the sound just couldn’t get loud enough without the headphone cups with everything cranked. When you would add the headphone cups, it sounded awful. Way too much bass and a lot of noise. And to even get the sound working in the first place was a nightmare of going through multiple settings taking way too much time. The day after and every subsequent day after that was complete frustration. First of all, just trying to get the headset to work at all, every day, was ridiculous.. The HMD constantly saying it’s disconnected. It would take me 30 to 45 minutes just to get it up and running. Then you would have sound problems after that. The company was sending out an email on day 1 or 2 of receiving the product trying to help me figure out the headset problems before they even knew I had problems. I can appreciate them trying to work out the problems but This is fundamental stuff that should be fixed on the ground level. Instead, they’re already putting out two more headsets which will probably have the same fundamental problems. I’ve owned over a handful of headsets so inexperience is not the issue Nor is it hardware. 3090, 9700k. HP Reverb g2 Has better resolution, better performance, better interface, ease of use, far better sound, and far better comfort. The field of view difference compared to normal mode on the Pimax versus the G2 is nominal. The wide fov for the Primax was unusable in my opinion and most people’s opinions on YouTube. Pimax really needs to make these headsets plug and play and ready to go immediately. Time is money And you shouldn’t be wasting it setting up a headset for days, for it to function properly. Especially at this price point!! ... show more

  • A Great Generational Leap for VR
The Pimax 8K X DMAS is one of the best upgrades I could have ever done. Coming from an Oculus Rift S, the difference in quality is night and day with the clarity. The display quality is great. What would be a blurry mess of pixels in the distance is now a very clear image. I recently tried the headset with glasses on and I can confirm that glasses fit perfectly and the screen is sharp and clear. The headphones were a major surprise. With the size and design, I expected them to be mid-tier at best. I was genuinely surprised to hear the amount of bass coming from these. They have good highs and lows and even rivaled some of my high-ish end headphones. There was some minor tinkering that was needed to get these to work. Primarily there was a lot of crackling and audio cutting off, but right-clicking on the sound icon on Windows 10 and then setting the headphones to 7.1 fixed all of the issues. Combined with the Valve Index controllers and base stations, I believe this is a very solid VR setup. It does require a incredibly beefy card to utilize the headset to the fullest. An RTX 3080 stuttered occasionally when set to the 8k resolution and was not fully stable until it was lowered to around 70% resolution. When hooked up to a RTX 4090, it performs above 100% resolution with no problems at all and continues to blow me away. The customer support with Pimax's team is among some of the best I could have ever expected. It is usually a slog to deal with support at most other businesses. As a former help desk and hardware technician for a technology focused business, I can say that I am genuinely impressed with how they handled my issues and inquiries. The person at the other end went above-and-beyond on multiple occasions to make sure that I was satisfied with my purchase. I can safely say that if you are considering a VR headset, I would recommend saving up for a Pimax if you want cutting-edge resolution. Even if you aren't considering the 8K X, there are more models coming out that are even more bonkers like the 12K model. ... show more

  • Really hit or miss
Update: bought this a second time, and it somewhat worked for one day, and then volume stopped working. However the day it was somewhat working, I could not view my mouse cursor on the entire right side (50% of the screen) of the monitor, which made it extremely difficult to change settings, since many buttons on screen are on the right side of the screen. This issue persisted and never went away. Once the volume stopped being emitted from the headset on all games, I gave up and decided to return it. The hardware is great when it works, but it seems like this company just doesn't invest enough money in actually making things work. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There are many bugs/problems with it, but when it works, it does work great. First off sometimes the screens are all jittery and it's just impossible to play comfortably, but resetting HMD in pitools seems to fix it. Second there are artifacts nearly all the time around the "normal FOV", this pretty much never goes away, and gets worse especially on the right side during games, which makes it seem like kind of a crappy headset. Third, just yesterday I spent 6 hours, yes, SIX HOURS, trying to fix a problem where the controllers kept appearing far away from the headset in both the pitools home environment and steamvr, after about 5 hours it actually got fixed, although I'm not sure exactly what I did, then after taking a break, the problem resurfaced and I spent another hour trying to fix it and then it was 10:30 pm and I had to go to sleep. Overall I think the technology has potential but it seems to just have a lot of really pretty terrible issues. ... show more
