Description

Considered by some music historians to be the "father" of piano technique, Muzio Clementi (1752–1832) is also regarded by many as the first composer to achieve the fully matured piano sonata of the late Classic period. Beethoven admired Clementi's sonatas and studied them closely. Indeed, according to the New Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the "dynamic extremes, propulsive figurations and octave melodies" of certain early and middle period Clementi sonatas (Op. 7, No. 3; Op. 13, No. 6) are echoed in early Beethoven sonatas of a decade later. Clementi exerted enormous influence on other pianists and composers as well, including such figures as Herz, Meyerbeer, and Dussek. Although unjustly neglected in the past, today Clementi's piano sonatas are widely admired and recorded (by Horowitz, among others) and are considered his chief musical legacy. This volume contains 10 of his finest works in the genre:Sonata in G Minor, Op. 7, No. 3Sonata in F Minor, Op. 13, No. 6Sonata in G Major, Op. 25, No. 2Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op. 25, No. 5Sonata in D Major, Op. 25, No. 6Sonata in A Major, Op. 33, No. 1Sonata in G Major, Op. 40, No. 1Sonata in B Minor, Op. 40, No. 2Sonata in D Minor and Major, Op. 40, No. 3Sonata in G Minor, Op. 50, No. 3 ("Didoneabbandonata"; Scena tragica)For this edition, all but one of the sonatas have been reprinted from an authoritative edition originally published by C. F. Peters, Leipzig. The result is a treasury of fine keyboard music — in an attractive, high- quality volume — by an innovative and influential composer whose music continues to win new admirers. • Five Stars
Needed a good Clementi book for a student. This was a great option.

  • First time Clementi
I brought this after reading about how Beethoven liked Clementi sonatas and how much better his sonatas are comparing with his sonatinas (which i find boring). The very first sonata - op.7 no.3 attracted me immediately so that I decided to learn it. There're some very rich sound/polyphonic elements in it like Bach's, and also dramatic elements like Beethoven's, which just make this sonata sounding quite unique and fun to play. It's my first time learning a Clementi sonata, and find it a fascinating experience. I'd recommend any intermediate or advanced pianists give Clementi sonatas a try! ... show more

  • Clementi Piano Sonatas reprinted from the Peters Edition
A reasonably priced reprint from the original Peters edition (except for Op.13 No.6). This volume contains ten representative Clementi sonatas for piano (he composed some 110) that make suitable recital repertoire for the advanced amateur or professional pianist. Those looking for the Sonata Op.12 No.1 in Bb-Major (part of Michelangeli's performing repertoire) or the Sonata Op.34 No.1 in C-Major (in Emil Gilels' recorded repertoire) can find these works in Band I of the Peters Edition of Selected Piano Sonatas by Clementi. These keyboard sonatas reveal the ways in which both classical Classical sonata form and an idiomatic style of composing for the piano was evolving. Collectively and historically they link the keyboard style of Mozart's time through the early Romantic Period. Clementi's sonatas are useful in developing technical resources including fluid brilliance, varied aspects of touch, good legato style and double notes. The elegant poignance of the F# minor sonata and the drama of the B minor are exemplary late Classical period examples of Clementi's compositional craft and style. The recordings of Mario Tipo and Horowitz may be good starting places for listeners to explore and become familiar with these works. 1. G minor, Op. 7 No. 3 (1782) 2. • A Must Have Book!
I played many Clementi sonatinas in my younger years and decided to give this a try. I've only been able to try out a few since I just received this book but I have a feeling it is going to be one of my favorites. I can't wait to be able to sit down and really play these. The book is beautiful and the music is difficult so I would not recommend this for a beginner. ... show more
