  • A tried and true classic for young students - and even adult players!
Heavy, clear print, good paper. I had the same book as a child and use it for piano students to this day. For those unfamiliar with the content, the book covers the range of mostly classical piano literature from Grade 1 to Grade 4. While many of the pieces are part of the standard student repertoire (Beethoven, Schumann, Bach, Chopin), some of the pieces are transcriptions of orchestral pieces or simplified arrangements of advanced material, neither of which I find appealing myself but they do help to expose students to some of the famous "melodies" or themes in classical music (such as Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers or Schubert's Moment Musicale in an easier key). There is also a good smattering of folk and old-fashioned popular tunes, such as Londonderry Air, Turkey in the Straw, Home Sweet Home, etc. I do like that there are a number of delightful though lesser-known teaching pieces which work well as recital pieces for the earlier and intermediate grades. Of interest would be Spindler's Trumpeter Serenade, Lichner's On the Meadow, etc. Even with the book's minor deficiencies, it is a wonderful addition to any young person's (or adult's) music book collection and will be useful for years as well as a joy for any pianist in the intermediate and even early advanced stage. Also great for sightreading! I will continue to buy this book for my students who all seem to love it. ... show more

  • Adult beginners get this book!
Don't let the title fool you, this is a good book for adult learners that are about a year into their piano journey. I've been playing about a year and a half and I wish that I'd found it earlier. There's only a few grade 1 pieces, most of what's in here will be challenging for beginners, but in kind of a really nice sweet spot where they sound harder than they are to play, which makes them fun to learn. I have Fabers adult classics 1 & 2, and those songs are more like simplified versions of difficult classical songs and kind of unsatisfying, whereas the ones in this book are more like selections of easier classical songs with their original notes. There are some gems in here that I'd never heard before. Also it's HUGE for the price, there's a hundred songs in here. Best value beginner book I've bought yet. ... show more

  • A CLASSIC!
Don't get fooled by the title. This very comprehensive collection of piano pieces is for every piano player, be it student, amateur and even pro. It includes works from classical to Parlor Pieces to folk dances, and even works by by lesser known composers. This collection is a grand classic that has been around for a very long time. I grew up with it, but had to leave the book behind when I moved to the U.S. I'm glad that it's still in print! (now by Hal Leonard; I had the original AMSCO), and available on Amazon for an affordable price! Also, the book "breaks in" easily, that means, it doesn't keep the tendency to "fall close" on the music rack all the time. ... show more

  • Excellent Collection Even For Older Intermediate Players (like myself)
My grandmother gave me this collection over 60 years ago. It cost $1.75 back then and I still have it and play from it. But now that we have two homes and two pianos, it was time to buy a duplicate. I took my new one to a print shop and had them spiral bind it so that it opens flat on the music stand. Before thinking of that, I was using a chip clip to hold it open to the page I wanted. ... show more

  • An excellent collection of music worth playing
I bought Piano Pieces for Children on the recommendation of my piano teacher who told me not to be troubled by the name. She's right, saying it is for children makes it sound... well, childish. But these pieces are anything but. None of them are dumbed down for easy playing, they are just well selected and arranged and graded (i-IV) so you can find work at the appropriate level. Most importantly, the music is not boring. I'm personally a fan of classical music and want to play so that I can experience this music in a more intimate manner - playing exercises that are designed to be nothing more than exercises would drive me crazy. I highly recommend this for anyone learning to play and who is hoping to develop a fun, interesting repertoire. Also, find a good teacher to help you. I tried teaching myself for years, but I've made more progress in a few weeks under the guidance of a teacher than I did in years on my own. ... show more

  • I still think it is an excellent music book for older children
There were several pieces I could use to teach a six year old, but most were too difficult. I still think it is an excellent music book for older children.

  • Time for the piano student to be proud
Scales and arpeggios help make a piano student develop finger strength and flexibility, but the student needs to be able to play songs that are pretty and impressive at their skill level. This book finally gives the student a great sound and performance without being discouraging. I’ve loved this book for 50 years and was thrilled to find it again. Excellent for teaching or just for enjoyment. ... show more
