  • Smooth
Size: SQLII40SD Style: Squall Ii Star Drag
Great reel for the price nice and smooth. I can cast pretty far out with braid on it. Ordered a regular right handed reel, but received a left handed one. Decided to keep it anyway.

  • SD 15 Excellent surf/saltwater casting reel.
Size: SQLII15SD Style: Squall Ii Star Drag
Bougth this for the magnetic casting control, it works great. For the first time I can cast over 100 yards. Set it up with 20# mono, casing 4oz on a 10ft rod. One issue is the reel clamp is pretty narrow so it may not fit on a big, or thick rod. Nice features: the tension knob even has a clicker, very handy if you want to keep track of exactly how loose your tension is vs the amount of magnetic brake. Feels well built, smooth and strong. Recommended for surf casting and catching big drum, redfish, jacks, etc. ... show more

  • Good starter surf reel
Light weight reel added 17lb suffix tritanium and I am able to haul things out of the surf as big as a 4 ft shark and the drag didn’t fail me only bad thing is the bearing are not as great as the fathom but I am still able to cast 100 yards that and the spool is thicker than the fathom so it holds less line but other than that I recommend as a beginner first reel just be sure to adjust the spool tension knob and magnetic control system so you don’t birds nest ps perfect rod to put is a Penn battalion 11’ because the reel clamps fit on it to secure it ... show more

  • Works well / cheap bearings / holds less line than advertised
Size: SQLII15SD Style: Squall Ii Star Drag
Comparing this reel (15 SD) to the squall 15 SDCS (casting special), the CS has somewhat better spool bearings and a wider spool. Free spool time is about the same but the CS is noticably smoother . A bearing upgrade to the 15SD should bring it up to the refinement level of the CS or maybe even too fast (haven't tried). My big peeve with all these reels is the undersized reel clamp and foot . I can deal with this on the squall 15SD but on the 15SDCS with a high line capacity and meant to work with big powerful surf rods .... SMH ... someone at Penn needs to be fired . My second peeve is that the line capacity is misleading . I added a pic with 300 yards of 20 lb braid wound on tight and it's pretty much at the 100 % line . The theoretical line capacity is 510 yards of 20 lb braid so the discrepancy is not MINOR. I had intended to add 100+ yards of mono top shot over the braid but will have to re-evaluate now. The magnet does seem to affect the reel as predicted and that's one of the main reasons to own this or the CS reel. I'll update my review after testing the reel out if needed. The Squalls are often described as Fathoms with graphite bodies .On inspecting the internals , I discovered that the squalls don't have a safety anti reverse (dogleg).. while the Fathoms do. Another piece of cost engineering / product handicapping by the marketing / beancounting departments . Overall, the issues I pointed out with these reels might not affect everyone but they are real issues and folks need to know about them (did I mention something about someone at Penn needing to be fired ?). • PENN SQL Open Reel with Cast Control that Works!
Update: I've owned this reel for over a year now and use it for off shore in Southern California using 25lb floracarbon and 30lb braid tied using the FG knot. My fishing buddy just ordered one after using mine this past weekend. I put 15 on board before he landed using his old rig. These were big Bonita and put up great fights. I have no fear of hooking up a big yellowtail with this little guy. I also have two other Penn Squalls including the 25N which I also love. The Squall 15 is a great caster using live bait and no weights. The magnetic cast control is wonderful. The 25N is good when throwing iron and takes a little while to get the hang of without the cast control. I highly recommend these reels for boat fishing and so do my buddies who have used mine. After getting spanked, they've ordered Penn Squall as well! Very nice light reel. The cast controls insure that backlash is a thing of the past. I loaded the reel with braid and boat cast with live bait looking for yellowtail in Southern California. I recommend the SQL15 to my friends and am a happy user. In fact, I like the Squall series so much that I now own 3 Penn SQL reels, the 15, 25n and the 30! Great value too! ... show more

  • Great reel for a good price
This reel is my first conventional surf casting reel. I have used bait casters in fresh water for decades and have been using spinning reels in the surf since childhood. But I have not used them for long distance casting in the surf. Foolish on my part! The Penn Squall SQL15 was a great first reel to cut my teeth on. The magnetic brake was great for helping me spend more time casting and less time unknotting backlashes as I learn to surf cast with a conventional reel. I started with it at a 10 setting and after a weekend of casts I have it down to a 5 setting. I can now cast further that I was ever able to with spinning reels, in fact I’m getting almost the entire 190 yards of 20 lb. test off the reel. I have caught only one fish large enough to feel the reel was challenged, a large sting ray, and it handled that fine. Only time will tell if it can handle the stress of heavier challenges. I will update if my opinion changes. Update 04/14/2016: I have become proficient enough casting conventional equipment that I needed to upgrade the reel on my surf rod to a larger one. This reel now resides on a Penn Battalion Inshore Conventional rod (BATIN1220C70). The reel fits the rod great and casting is just as good as on the surf rod it was one. I'm still very pleased with this reel. ... show more
