This is my first hand grinder, and first burr grinder and I wanted something cost effective to see if pour over coffee was going to be for me. The grinder works very well, but I had some trial and error figuring out how to set the courseness of my grind. Hint, tighten the star-looking gear thing (turn it to the right so it screws down closer to the bottom container) for finer grounds, and loosen it (turn it to the left so it comes up higher on the screw) for courser grounds. Loosening it past about half way, however, will result in ungrounded beans following straight through! 😉 The filter also works pretty well, but water passes through pretty quickly, even with a paper filter added. With course grounds, it went strskght through without brewing hardly at all and with finer grounds, it held better, although it did not seem to allow the grinds to bloom. It is also VERY unstable on its mount and even the slightest jostling will cause it to tip over and grinds go everywhere. The product is very easy to clean, and the grinder is easy to use. Manually grinding takes longer than an electric grinder, obviously, but I did not find it so arduous that it felt like "a good workout." I typically start my electric kettle, add about 2-3 tablespoons of beans, and have finished grinding them and set up either my French Press or pour over by the time my water boils, about 2 or 3 minutes or so. I'm satisfied with my purchase, but suspect there is better quality available. But as an initial investment to see if I would enjoy measuring grinds in grams, testing water temperature somewhat obsessively, and referring to making my first cup of joe after stumbling out of bed as a "meditative experience," the grinder and filter have been perfect. And for those interested, I discovered that I do enjoy it, I can taste a noticeable improvement in the flavor of my coffee (even Folgers tasted better, no cap) and, being the only coffee drinker in the house, my pound of coffee lasts longer with less wasted from getting dumped after being on the burner too long. ... show more

Love the simplicity and quietness of the hand grinder. The mesh filter is nice, however the seam is too far from the edge causing a void under the material, which allows for grounds to get stuck. Overall it’s a good starter set for the price.

In reading the past reviews the main takeaway was that most were saying that the grinding was difficult. I did not find that the case at all. I put my electric kettle on and grind 4 heaps of coffee beans at a grind that I spin 5 spins counter clockwise from the bottom. If you spin the nut to the bottom, that is the finest setting and I measured about 18 spins before removing the nut which is the course setting. The spinning of the lever is easy and pretty quick. By the time I finish grinding, the water is heated to about 198 degrees Fahrenheit which is perfect taste for me. The grind and heat if the water determines the taste. And if course the amount of grounds determines the strength. This is exactly what I am looking for. Especially with the easy drip filter. Clean up is pretty simple. Just use a dish to gather the parts and thats it. The one thing I wish they included was a cover for the jar. ... show more

If your looking to get into grinding you own coffee this is a hobby killer for sure. Starting from the top working down the retention screw is placed on and tightened in the same direction the grinder turns. This causes it to loosen often while grinding. With 8 teeth on the adjustment wheel there are big difference between each tooth. The rentainer clip is cheap and allows for large amount of play so grinds have various changes in partical size for same setting. It take 8 full rotations from full up and disconnection making only 2 full turns usefully after that grind size it to big for even cowboy coffee. Espresso isn't an option and even pour over become very difficult to get grinded correct. If need a backup and are willing to take the time to master this will serve well but not good. ... show more

I bought a couple of these to have on hand as convenience items in my mercantile store. Although it seems to be designed as a retail box, The box does not show you what's inside or list the contents. There is no indication that the pour-over is in there. It just has a picture of the grinder and an extra jar, which is not in there. These are inexpensive items and they look and feel like inexpensive items. ... show more
