  • It works!
Color: White
It works. That's where I'm starting, but it's going to be hard to do a proper review. Out of the box, it came with a nice silicone case to protect it, a charging cable, and a getting started guide with the website on the front cover. Now, about me: I'm your typical American... I speak English. I may be able to ask you where's the bathroom in a couple of languages, but that's about it. I've probably made more than one French or Italian native snicker under their breath, but at least I try to be polite, which seems to help. I've got a couple of translation apps on my phone, but they've never really excited me with their capabilities. I was able to get this translator for free in order to give a review, and the first thing I'm going to say is that for $99, I did not expect much. I'm happy to say it overdelivers. Other than its tiny size (smaller than a pack of cigarettes) and the interface that is not up to the "Apple Standard", I'd say it's bloody good. Getting it hooked up to my local Wi-Fi (required for full use and updates) was easy. Translating between two languages seems to be pretty accurate. Like I said, I know a few phrases and according to the device, I actually spoke them clearly enough to translate, accurately. It took me a short minute to figure out the interface and how to change languages, but once you understand it, it's pretty straight forward. Then I tried reading an online newspaper (using the photo translation) and here is where I wish it was a much bigger device. I could only get a paragraph or so at once, but after a moment of online communications, it gave me text that made sense and seemed to go with the story and pictures. Of course, it has a little problem with the inline ads, but after a few tries got good at avoiding them. Actually, if I were to use that feature, I'd probably be reading an actual book or newspaper, which is laid out more in a readable fashion without all the garbage you find on a web page. It's stopped me several times during the first day to ask me if I wanted an upgrade to one of the apps. For the most part, it takes just a few minutes. I tried the off-line translator and other than it occasionally misinterpreting (wildly) what I said, it did quite well. It prints what it hears, so it's easy to tell if it gets it wrong. I like the fact that it has an A and B button so you can tell it which of the two languages is being input at that moment. The volume control took me a minute to find (swipe up) and it's plenty loud in a quiet environment. I don't know how well it will do in a noisy environment, but that's something I tend to avoid as much as possible. The Interpret app was interesting, allowing a semi-real-time conversation to occur. Press the top button, speak, and press it again, then wait for the translation, and it will speak it in the second language. If you press the bottom (B) button, they speak in their language, press, and it translates to your language. I just have to try this with my Firefly DVDs! In all, if I was traveling to other countries and wanted to have a chance at understanding anything, this would not be a bad idea. It's small, easy to carry, and has a wide range of capabilities. Just make sure you attach it to our international data plan on your phone. ... show more

  • Woks well
Color: White
This is a nice foreign language translater. It works well. I speak three languages and have found that it does a good job with translating between those three. Overall, I think it is good to have if you want a translator separately from your phone. It could come in handy in certain situations. For me, however, I have found that google translate is enough for my needs. I need a translator for leisure traveling and I have found that I would prefer not to have to carry this, as well as my phone and a charger. I also found the battery does not last very long so long traveling days would require charging. If I find the need for a translator for work or to use as a supplement to learning a new language, this would be handy to keep at my desk as a go to. ... show more

  • not very user friendly
Color: White
I really wanted to like this. I lead an English-speaking organization that shares a lot of space with a mostly Spanish-speaking organization and wanted to be able to use this as a communication tool. The instructions were pretty basic and not super helpful. The user-interface isn't very user-friendly. It is kinda clunky. The programming was glitchy - I was trying to go from English to Spanish, but some of the letters came up as some sort of asian characters. I'm sure this device has some niche uses - maybe the document translator, or the audio file translator and such, but if you really just want to translate a conversation back and forth, a simple smart phone app will do. ... show more

  • Great translator.
Color: White
I know some reviewers have downplayed this a bit because, yes you can do all of these functions on a current smart phone. You don't truly need this device for its functions. That being said, I think its more about the convenience. You might simply want to save your battery life of your phone during a long day out sight seeing. Or perhaps your phone is being used for navigation at the same time you want to translate sign or stop and talk to someone. I had a stand alone translator from a few years ago that we took to Europe. It worked great. Fast forward to a recent upcoming trip and I couldn't get it to charge. So, I picked this as a replacement. I'm very happy with it. My wife who speaks French tested it against the French she knows and says it was accurate enough for your basic conversation. We also tested it against the little bit of Italian we know with similar results. In short, for the testing we were able to do it seems to work just fine. If you absolutely don't want to carry one more electronic device on your trip I get it and this probably isn't for you. If you're like me and can see the convenience of this device then I think you'll be happy with it. Overall quality feels nice. Time will tell if it holds up better. (NOTE: This not the same brand/model of the one I had previously that has a bad battery.) 5 out of 5 stars! ... show more

  • So helpful at work
Color: White
I got this for my job that requires me to frequently talk with people who no little to no English. I usually use an app on my phone but wanted something that worked on its own. This thing has quite a few features. I like that there is a massive library of languages. An example is they don't just have Spanish, they have all the diffrent regions of it. I've mainly been using it offline. Its pretty straightforward to operate. Set language A and language B and use the 2 buttons on the side (A & B) to choose which one you will be talking in. It shows on the screen in both languages and says it out loud. It keeps a constant save of your translations, with the newest generating at the top and pushing the others down. Leaved that section and coming back does not reset it. You have to touch and long hold on a message and it will give you the ability to deleted just that message or the entries string. A neat feature is you can go click on a previous translation and it will read it out loud again as many times as you need. I did find that changing either language takes the device a bit to load, its not horrible, it's just not instant. It's a great handheld size and comes with a half case that protects the back. Overall I love this and it is extremely helpful. ... show more
