I got a garlic press by OXO for a Christmas present. I was surprised that was so bad (Garlic oozes out and gets into the hinge. The compartment where the garlic goes in flips and flaps. It is extremely hard to clean ), I got frustrated. So, I bought this. It was almost night and day. The new OXO garlic press is made of stainless steel. It is a little heavy. But it presses easily. The handles are wide and soft and are easy for my arthritic hand. It is easy to clean the garlic out with one motion. It was a little expensive, but I can use it easily and don't get frustrated. This OXO garlic press meets all the must haves, and IS the Best Garlic Press in the World!!! 1) durable metal and hinge that doesn’t break when you press a big load of garlic (that happens with most presses on the market that aren’t really designed to work) 2) the pressed garlic is neat and easily scrapped on the edge is a bowl or with a knife (this isn’t the case with many presses sold where the pressed garlic squeezes everywhere through cracks and has to be picked out, including the fancy German one that supports self scapes the garlic for you). This OXO presses a large or small portion of garlic and is easily scraped into where it needs to go. 3) easily self cleans - flip it over and bam!…the unpressed remainder pops out with little effort! Many presses require extra picking tools that are easily lost (why do I need an extra kitchen tool to service a kitchen tool?) or if they do have self cleaning the cleaning teeth are cheaply made, break easily, or just fall off - not the case with this OXO 4) made with kitchen grade metal that doesn’t tarnish in the dish washer (some presses are made with aluminum that tarnishes in the dishwasher to a powdery flat gray - avoid - why would I want a kitchen appliance that can’t go in the dishwasher?) So given that this is the best in the world… not sure why the newer OXO model is a cheaper design that doesn’t do all these things. ... show more

I've been using this for two years before I wrote this review. Disclosure: I usually chop off the hard/woody bottoms of garlic in general. Fresh or frozen garlic stands no match against this OXO garlic press. After two years of heavy use it seems to be holding up fine. Typical use looks like this... Throw 1-3 cloves of garlic in. Close and press. Open, throw 1-3 cloves more garlic in. It does not seem to get clogged. Once I am done crushing said garlic, I take a knife and run it parallel where the crushed garlic comes out of to free any stringy bits before the next step. I then use the red grid grate thing by folding it inversely to clear the metal grate. A quick scoop of the garlic holder with a finger and you can throw that in your food or throw it out. The only minor hassle I have is if I want to add more then a few cloves to something and do not want to set it down. But other then that it's a great product. And has help up well! If the grates look generally clean I leave it on the top shelf of my dishwasher and it comes out clean, no problems -- unsure if it's "really" dishwasher safe but I do it. ... show more

This is a very solid and sturdy product! Nice & weighty in your hand; far superior to the vast majority of garlic presses I have compared against - & I am choosy!! Lol, I actually specifically hunted this press down, as I had accidentally left my last one when moving; nothing I found could compare when trying to replace it. This is simply superior product. After reading some of the reviews, and some of the answers, it looks like this garlic press has gone through some changes. . . .but they are using the same listing. The current metamorphosis of this garlic press is quite heavy. It’s actually 14.4oz, so almost a pound. Though it looks like stainless. . . it’s not. . it’s zinc. The handles are thick and firm. Makes for a nice grip to press the garlic through. You do not have to peel the garlic with this press. If you do not peel it, then you’ll need to remove the “skin” after each press before pressing more. Invert the top handle to push excess garlic / skin back through the holes to clean. But before you do that, you’ll want to scrape-off the garlic you pressed through on the front of the press. This garlic press is Made in China. So at the current price of almost seventeen bucks, I think it’s a bit expensive. But it works well and I really like it. Simple. . . and easy. I have used several other garlic presses, and I like this one the best. ... show more
