  • YESSS!!!!!
OK, this is DEFINITELY not a gimmick! Follow the instructions and this will save you time and sanity in the kitchen. !. It must be DRY. 2. Only put 3-5 cloves in at a time. 3. Don't Hulk-smash it, roll it with minimal pressure & it works like a champ. It also rinses very easily & dries quick. Bonus case has holes on either end to ensure it dries completely in between uses when you toss it in a drawer. I will never hand/knife smash garlic and fight with those pesky skins sticking to everything ever again. ... show more

  • Did not work on hardback garlic for me
The product itself was of good quality, but I was incredibly disappointed that it did not remove the skin from my hardneck garlic. The outer paper skin came off, but hardneck garlic has a thicker inner skin that this device wouldn't touch. I didn't say, globally, that it doesn't work on hardneck because I only grow the Music variety, so I don't have data to show it won't work on other varieties of hardneck andI don't have enough expertise to know if the thick, inner skin of Music is a feature of all hardneck garlic. Also I don't know if the time interval between harvest and peeling has any bearing on ease of skin removal; I was peeling mine four months from harvest. If anyone wants a tip, since hardneck doesn't store as long as softneck (the kind that stores sell), I smash the cloves with my knife for easy peeling then pulse the cloves in a big batch in my food processor with salt. After that I use a small cookie scoop and put scoops on a cookie sheet, freeze them, then put the balls in mason jars for my deep freeze. Then when I cook, I just pop however many balls out I want to use-easy! If you're wondering why I don't store them in oil, it is because doing this poses a great risk of making yourself ill from pathogens possibly present on garlic that grow readily in the anaerobic environment of the oil (state extensions have good information for consumers on this type of thing). It's hard to recreate the conditions commercial preparers use to safely pack garlic in oil. ... show more

  • A Simple Tool all Cooks Need with the Design Touches You Expect from OXO
My first experience peeling garlic was a my first job - I was a Freshman in high school, and got a gig as a cook's assistant at a local Italian restaurant. First task? Peel a 3-gallon bucket of garlic cloves with a paring knife. I tell you, I wasn't aware I had so many nerve endings under my fingernails! My fingertips stung and stung for a couple of days. Over time, I got better at peeling garlic, but it was still an unpleasant task, made no better by the occasional finger sting. Eventually, I learned a couple of tricks, such as shaking the garlic cloves in a Mason jar to loosen the skins or knocking them around in a food processor with a dough kneading blade. But then my friend told me his wife had purchased him a "garlic roller" as he called it. The minute he told me about it, I realized that this was exactly what I needed to do a few cloves of garlic for everyday cooking. Like many products you see on Amazon, once you're aware of them, there's dozens and dozens of choices / variations for different suppliers, but I decided to go with OXO because it's a brand I know and trust, and one that focuses on excellent design. Pros: • Great design - flared ends helps keep the garlic cloves inside while you roll them to loosen the skins • Comes with a case - it's a nice touch I since if it's stored in a drawer it's kept free from dirt and dust, and you don't have to wash / dry it before use - helps hide it if the color doesn't match your decor • Silicone material is familiar food-grade material used for bakeware Cons: • Only one color selection • A tad expensive ... show more

  • it is easy to wash
What can I say about this product? Well, it changed my mothers life. For almost thirty years, I've watched her use garlic in her daily cooking. I've seen the turmoil and tears...you know...when you have to use a steak knife to peel each clove and you just can't quite get the garlic skins off...and it takes forever. This one product was a real game changer. She uses garlic more than ever now, and never dreads peeling it. This tool peels even the most stubborn cloves with almost zero effort. It is legite...it is easy to wash...it is worth every penny. Every household needs one of these, and if you don't have one, I pity you. ... show more

  • It works!
You can't imagine how many "magical tricks to peel garlic" I've heard throughout the years. There's the knife trick (which is messy, and requires a whole head), and there's the "shake in a two inverted metal bowls" trick (which as it turns out, only works when you have at least two heads of garlic -- but who ever needs to peel two heads of garlic outside of a restaurant/catering/Thanksgiving setting??), and so on. There's the multiple gadgets from fly-by-night brands here on Amazon that have rave reviews... by Vine voice purchasers, or imaginary people (who have just registered, have a picture of a plant in their profile, and have only reviewed one thing, which happens to be a garlic peeling gadget). Of course, no surprise, those products don't work. So I admit I was curious about this peeler. I gave it a try because I figured OXO would not stake their name on an entirely worthless product... and it turns out I was right. This actually works, and it works on small quantities. I can rip 2-5 pieces from a head, slot them in, and then "massage them" and out pops the peeled bits. It's really nice, and I never have to really touch the garlic. The storage box with vents is a nice touch. And if you want to complete your garlic set, I suggest this to store it, away from the light: Now Designs Burlap Garlic Sack . ... show more
