  • Bunny loves it! And a comment on quality variation
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 9 Pound (Pack of 1)
Great quality product! I order the 9lb box for my miniature fuzzy lop Darla every two months or so. She absolutely loves it and will clean her hay rack out to the last piece. The packaging is easy to store and keep tidy. I do wish they had an airtight resealable top, but that’s mostly because I buy such large quantities for my little bunny and would like it to stay fresher longer. The only true “downside” to I’ve experienced is that when comparing the price to similar products, it’s one of the most expensive. Since I don’t have much experience with these competitors (Darla liked this hay so much I never needed to shop around) I can’t speak on the quality vs. pricing sliding scale there. I want to address some of the reviews complaining that the product is not consistent in quality. I’d suggest that it is not the quality that changes, but the texture and body of the Timothy hay. Hay is harvested in “cuttings”, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. For anyone curious, I’d direct you to West Meadow Rabbit’s video on YouTube on the difference between cuttings. Unless your critter is super picky, it shouldn’t make any significant difference to them or the hay’s nutritional profile. Otherwise, I’d suggest buying a hay product which specifies the “cut”. For example, my previous box resembled 3rd cut hay: it was darker in color, the strands were thinner, curlier and almost cotton-candy like, and the smell was potently sweet & like tea. There were few of the “fuzzy tops”, or seed heads, in this mix. My bunny likes this because of the sweeter taste and strong smell. My current box more closely resembles 1st cut hay: the stalks are more rigid, thicker, and a pale green color with lots of fuzzy seed heads that Darla goes crazy for. It just smells like normal hay, and does break into smaller pieces as you get to the bottom of the box along with a more noticeable buildup of dust. This is normal, especially when buying large portions as the fragile stalks get crushed in transit. My bunny enjoys munching along the straight stalks like we would slurp a spaghetti noodle. Again, both should be received well by your bunny so long as they aren’t super picky, and they shouldn’t have significantly different nutrition profiles so don’t let that deter you from seeing if they like this stuff! This brand and product as a whole is excellent, and in my opinion the change in texture is a good thing - no wasteful discrimination for superficial reasons (on a product which does not state cutting) and a natural variation. ... show more

  • Good for guinea pig
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 9 Pound (Pack of 1)
I ordered Oxbow hay several times for our four guinea pigs. They always eat it all and the price is competitive compared to the one at the local store. The hay is dry and not dusty. The guinea pigs eat it all the time without complaint. The card box is good quality, and inside is a plastic bag containing hay. So you can close it and the smell will not be that bad. I recommend! ... show more

  • Green, whole, and fragrant!
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 25 Pound (Pack of 1)
The two stars are for the quick arrival for arriving the next day, but these last three batches were terrible. I understand it's randomly hand-picked. Though, do we really need to drop $50 for roots? I feel bad for my bunnies. They deserve better! Seriously will consider paying extra for kaytee in smaller quantities. Appalling! Edit: Today, I reluctantly opened the package and could immediately smell the fresh greens through the exterior box. It's absolutely stunning! The bunnies love it and I don't have to worry about them tossing it to the side for nesting material. They savor each piece and actually stay full. This is certainly a better batch and well worth it! ... show more

  • My go to

My go to for quality hay

  • Quality has severely dropped
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 25 Pound (Pack of 1)
I've been buying the large box of oxbow for about 3 years. The quality was good for a long time, but over the past year or so the quality has been getting inconsistent. But the last 6 or 7 boxes have been exponentially worse and worse, and the last three were horrendous. I finally switched to Small Pet Select. The hay they give is the best quality hay I've ever seen, better than oxbow has ever been by a mile. It's a little bit more expensive (though not much more) but it is way better. And i can set up subscribe and save through their site directly, no need to pay a certain mega company that starts with an "A" more money. The last few boxes of oxbow have been almost entirely chaff, dead stray fibers as thin as human hair with a little bit of green 3rd cut mixed in, chunks of roots, pieces of wood and LOTS of dust. I put my hay on a sifter before I give it to our buns so they don't have sneezing issues. And for the past 4 months or so, I am not exaggerating, 10 plus pounds of each 25lb box has been inedible dust and chaff that falls through the sifter. Disgraceful. This might be suitable for horses, but not for pet bunnies, one of the most delicate animals on the planet. Its shameful to charge this much money for trash. Also, for reference, I can count on one hand the number of negative reviews I've left in my life on a product. Dont be fooled if the first couple shipments are good. Don't wait and see if maybe the next one will finally be better, like i did for so long. Just switch to Small Pet Select. ... show more

  • I use it for my Sulcata tortoises
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 9 Pound (Pack of 1)
In the winter they need a heated space to stay warm. I spread this hay around their house to help keep them warm and to make it easier to clean up, and they can eat it if they get hungry. Cheap and perfect.

  • Great Hay
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 9 Pound (Pack of 1)
I have been using oxbow for a very long time for my bunnies and it has been great quality. I have never had a box from oxbow where my bunnies did not eat it all! Only thing I would be aware of and warn people of is the delivery damage. My box is so damaged that I will have to find a new way to store the bag of hay since it looks like my box was beaten up. ... show more

  • Exactly as advertised
Flavor Name: Western Timothy Hay Size: 25 Pound (Pack of 1)
Bulk buying hay to save on the price for my giant lop bunny. Wanted to add some variety to his orchard grass and oxbow is a reputable brand. The timothy hay was very soft, second cutting with no seed heads. He always eats his hay, so the taste is what he likes. This 25lbs lasted over 6 months with a compressed orchard bale. Saved in a 50 gal black trash bag with no holes in my garage with no issue. ... show more
