Great quality product! I order the 9lb box for my miniature fuzzy lop Darla every two months or so. She absolutely loves it and will clean her hay rack out to the last piece. The packaging is easy to store and keep tidy. I do wish they had an airtight resealable top, but that’s mostly because I buy such large quantities for my little bunny and would like it to stay fresher longer. The only true “downside” to I’ve experienced is that when comparing the price to similar products, it’s one of the most expensive. Since I don’t have much experience with these competitors (Darla liked this hay so much I never needed to shop around) I can’t speak on the quality vs. pricing sliding scale there. I want to address some of the reviews complaining that the product is not consistent in quality. I’d suggest that it is not the quality that changes, but the texture and body of the Timothy hay. Hay is harvested in “cuttings”, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. For anyone curious, I’d direct you to West Meadow Rabbit’s video on YouTube on the difference between cuttings. Unless your critter is super picky, it shouldn’t make any significant difference to them or the hay’s nutritional profile. Otherwise, I’d suggest buying a hay product which specifies the “cut”. For example, my previous box resembled 3rd cut hay: it was darker in color, the strands were thinner, curlier and almost cotton-candy like, and the smell was potently sweet & like tea. There were few of the “fuzzy tops”, or seed heads, in this mix. My bunny likes this because of the sweeter taste and strong smell. My current box more closely resembles 1st cut hay: the stalks are more rigid, thicker, and a pale green color with lots of fuzzy seed heads that Darla goes crazy for. It just smells like normal hay, and does break into smaller pieces as you get to the bottom of the box along with a more noticeable buildup of dust. This is normal, especially when buying large portions as the fragile stalks get crushed in transit. My bunny enjoys munching along the straight stalks like we would slurp a spaghetti noodle. Again, both should be received well by your bunny so long as they aren’t super picky, and they shouldn’t have significantly different nutrition profiles so don’t let that deter you from seeing if they like this stuff! This brand and product as a whole is excellent, and in my opinion the change in texture is a good thing - no wasteful discrimination for superficial reasons (on a product which does not state cutting) and a natural variation. ... show more

I ordered Oxbow hay several times for our four guinea pigs. They always eat it all and the price is competitive compared to the one at the local store. The hay is dry and not dusty. The guinea pigs eat it all the time without complaint. The card box is good quality, and inside is a plastic bag containing hay. So you can close it and the smell will not be that bad. I have had pocket pets for a long time and I currently have 2 free roam bunnies. Rabbits should have an unlimited amount of hay so I go though a lot! This is one of the best values I have found and is consistently good quality. Some other brands I have purchased value packs from have a lot of brown, not fresh cuts but oxbow seems to have good quality control. So the alfalfa got a terrible review from my skinny pigs, pocket hippos, hairless guinea pigs. But ooh they love this stuff, so I love this stuff. Skinny’s eat a lot!! Way more than normal guineas. So we like the big box. Lots of catkins for my dudes, which is the favored part. Oh I just love to watch them munch, munch, munch. They are so well mannered. Perfect but if you’re new to hay, this hay is less soft and a little more stabby. It’s aromatic (sweet hay smell). I suggest pulling it apart in the bag as much as you can so it’s easier to get to. Bunny loves To eat it and also to spread it around… she seems to like to play/forage with it more than the meadow grass or other hays. ... show more

    • Lots of pollen - caused allergic reaction

It's probably just me but this batch contained alot of allergens or pollen which triggered an allergic reaction every time I refilled my bunny's pen. I started masking before refilling to minimize the pollen getting into my nose and lungs but sometimes that didn't even work. It is nice hay, no brown weeds at all but it is packed in so tightly that I have a hard time taking it out of the bag/box. It is good value, I just wished I wasn't allergic. ... show more
