My 7mo puppy is 40lbs of pure energy. I was looking for something that would hold her attention & keep her from being bored without just gnawing on a bone. This is the perfect stimulation for her! I also like that I don't have to worry about sharp edges anywhere on this toy. I purchased the XL last night & put it together out of her sight. This entailed simply opening the outer package, then pulling a netted bag out of the center of there log; this bag contained six squirrels that I cut out of the bag. There are four offsetting holes in the body of the log, with five if you count the larger hole at the top. I put all of the squirrels back in the log & introduced her to it so that it was more intriguing than just seeing squirrels piled up next to the trunk. She immediately went for it, grabbing one squirrel after another. She first played with them by the head or tail, so she got extra excited when I showed her that the bodies squeaked. They get strewn everywhere as she roots them out, then she sticks her nose in the log & tosses it around, prancing over to me to show that she found all the squirrels. The individual squirrels are also exciting to my puppy, & it's funny to see her play with one then realize there's another in the corner to play with, then the log, then another squirrel she hasn't played with in 2mins, & then another, & so on, ad infinitum. Sometimes, she takes a squirrel & brings it to me, stuffing it in my hand or on my lap so I can toss it to her. After a while, I put them back in the log, & the cycle starts again. I like to leave one or two stuffed in the middle & not poking out of a hole so that she has to work a bit harder to get them out, & she loves it. That means that I love it, since I can get work done & don't have to worry about my fur baby being bored & destructive. Speaking of destruction, my only complaint is that the squirrels aren't exactly durable. Within the first 3mins one of the squirrels lost a tail & its hair on top. Today another one kept its tail, but is also now bald. Given how much my puppy loves this toy, it's not enough for me to deduct a star. I don't know how long the trunk & the rest of the squirrels will hold up, but so far, I'm incredibly pleased. My puppy is too, as it was the first thing she went looking for after our morning routine/to start her playtime. I rarely write reviews, but this is one item that surprised me with how well it works; I readily recommend it to anyone with a fur baby! ... show more

My small dog absolutely loves these little squirrels. The original ones came in a "stump" holder where he had to find a way to get them out. Great toy for him. But he chewed on them so much, after months, they had to be removed. He spent a lot of time looking for them and every time he saw the "stump" he went wild trying to get his little chews. I saw these and knew they would make him ecstatic. They are reasonably priced and fit into the holder. He is a very happy dog! ... show more

These are great for x small and small dogs. My pup who is 5 lbs loves playing with these and squeaking them. When my sister and her dog come over she also loves playing with them she is about 12lbs. I gave a pack to my sister and she said it’s great in her apartment as they don’t make loud noises when she throws them for her pup to chase. Great for houses and apartment living. Really love these. The hide-a-squirrle toy is my all-time favorite. It is hilarious watching puppies pull the little squirrels out of the log and then squeak them. It is great toy for young puppies. Once your puppy enters its chewing phase, it will probably chew up the toy as it is rather plush and not particularly tough. I'd say you should use it while supervising. ... show more

I had barely gotten this thing out of the package, and my dog was instantly diving for the squirrels. They were still in the mesh bag. I don’t know what it is about this toy, but she kept trying to pull the bag of squirrels out of my hand before I could untie the bag… so I had high hopes for it. She sort of got the hang of it, but she gnawed on the log as much as tried to pull out the squirrels. Every time I stuffed them back in, she doggedly (ha) went back for them. I love that she enjoyed diving for squirrels, but then she spent a bit of quiet time behind the couch with one of them, who squeaked in agony a few times, and came back sans an ear, which she chewed up and swallowed before I could stop her. This is an 11 pound small breed puppy, by the way. The ear shouldn’t be that easy to pull off, or else they should make the ears nubs, harder to remove. She is a determined chewer, still teething, but I was concerned about how quickly that happened. I guess that’s why they sell replacement squirrels, but I don’t know if that’s a great idea now. Let’s see how well they survive her for the next week or two. The game itself is unusually fascinating for her. I am hoping to break her of her cricket hunting habit and replace that with these relatively less risky squirrels, but we’ll see. One star off for the ease at which she created Squirrel Van Gogh. But four stars for her evident enjoyment. I do wish I had bought one of the smaller, less expensive ones; she seems pretty happy after pulling out three squirrels. I thought six would be better to keep her occupied longer, but she doesn’t always get around to removing them all, has to ‘kill’ the ones she took out. She would have been fine with the medium version of this thing, I think… oh well, if I need to replace it one day, I’ll go smaller. Yes, like others have described, she was wearing fur on her snout after a few rounds with the log. It does shed, it or the squirrels, one. But that has been true about several of her toys, including a Nina Ottoson troll treat dispenser toy, and a lion treat dispenser by the same maker. She rips the hair/mane off those gleefully. One wonders why they have them. I feel the same about the squirrel ears and the little tufts on their heads, all of which she will have ingested at some point… ... show more

I have two toy Pomeranians and they love these squeaky balls. They used to be better made a few years ago as my dogs can now tear them open rather quickly if I'm not paying attention. My puppy needed a new toy & this one is super! She pulls all 3 squirrels out, chews on them & then attacks the tree stump. So funny to watch! Seems to be well constructed & squirrels have squeaker in them.
