  • A fun introduction to Arduino robotics, but some quality issues and confusing online-only docs.
This starter kit is a reasonably priced introduction to Arduino robotics, providing not just the Uno R3 microcontroller, but also the car chassis & motors, some simple sensors, and (surprisingly) Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity modules. While the BT/WiFi options add some 'gee whiz!' factor, it also skips over some of the more typical concepts and components (e.g., ultrasonic transceiver, servos, limit switches, etc...), which are not included in this kit. Construction-wise, there are no in-box instructions at all, but there is a QR code on the outside of the box that leads to online instructions (you didn't recycle the box already, did you??), but you'll need to check to see which WiFi shield is included, as apparently there are two different shields (blue/black) shipped randomly, and the instructions differ. Mine had the black shield, but following the links in the online docs, the alternative instructions were for a more extensive kit. It may be a bit confusing to piece the two sets of docs together, if you aren't already familiar with things... That said, the online docs do slice the learning into nicely staged lessons, incrementally adding functionality, and providing both still & video-based instructions, as well as code (though the code link is buried in the middle of the docs - it would have been nice if all of the downloadables were collected together). Also, there were some odd quality-control issues - for example, my battery box power switch was reversed - on was off / off was on. That's a pretty significant oversight, especially when parts of the instructions explicitly tell you to switch the power switch off - you'll wind up with an unknowingly energized circuit! In the end, this seems like it could be a reasonable bulk-pack of components for an experienced maker to use when teaching someone new to the hobby, but I can't recommend this kit as a true 'starter' for inexperienced makers. For someone with minimal (or no) prior experience, I'd instead look for something with better quality control, consistent documentation, and a component selection that leans more toward offline sensors than to BT/WiFi connectivity. ... show more
