  • A nice 2nd banjo
I'll give it an overall 4. I ordered this banjo as a spare for myself and after some minor mods, I kinda like it.... 1st the Pros: Great finish, and the spalted maple gives it a unique look without being overly gaudy. I use spalted maple on the fretless banjos I build, and it is great wood. The neck is solid and the fretwork is average for the price. Once tuned up it held pitch great, even after an hour of playing it was spot on. The intonation up the neck was perfect, once I replaced the bridge and got it set properly. Now the Cons: a few frets need a bit of dressing, but nothing major. The bridge it came with is...just replace it with a better quality; i.e. Snuffy, Grover, Sosebee, Scorpion. The head tension , mainly for my taste, needed to be adjusted a bit. I will replace the head with a Remo Fiberskin, but again that's personal preference. The tuners...I think that's what they are, but I'm being kind. I pulled them and replaced with Gotoh's. Somehow a resonator banjo with cheap guitar tuners isn't right to me. (They worked fine, just looked like crap). The strap hooks needed to be moved; another minor change. Overall, it's not the quality of my Cox banjo, but for the price, it's a low cost great sounding banjo. ... show more

  • Very nice
Very nice. Pretty easy to set up. Nice tone. Bought the Carrion C-2910 hard case separately, fits great. Fender published a nice YouTube video demonstrating how to measure down for placing the bridge in the right spot. Packing was poor. It was a miracle it arrived intact. (picture)

  • Beautiful spalted maple banjo is a pleasure to play and look at
Would have given it 5 stars if it had arrived in the advertised four day period. Instead it took 12 days to get here and we missed out on giving it as a Christmas gift. We ordered it on the 15th of December and didnt get it till the 27th. That being said we dont have any other complaints. It arrived undamaged and only needed its bridge to be placed and the strings tuned to complete the setup. A downloaded app on our phone made tuning quick and easy and it has stayed in relatively proper tune thru its first month of playing. The spalted maple head, neck and resonator offer a handsome contrast to the dark rosewood fretboard and acrylic inlays. Its chrome plated armrest and tailpiece are respetfully smooth and free of any scuffs or damage. Due to its metal pot and tone ring the sound is quite punchy and resonates for a long time. It does lose this characteristic when notes are played up the fretboard and the sound becomes notably more muffled. The string action is tolerable with no buzzing or prominent bends in the neck. It is more than capable of leading a bluegrass jam and sounds proper when paired with guitars mandolins and fiddles. We tightened the 30 brackets around the drum head carefully and caution anyone else doing this to keep in mind the j hooks will bend easily if monkey wrenched to tightly. As an entry level instrument this banjo is quite capable of keeping a new bluegrass musician happy until they are ready to buy a more expensive one. ... show more
