  • This product is a fine ground meant as a seed starting medium.
Size: 15 lbs.
It came exactly as described, what I had in mind was coarse vermiculite. So I used this instead as a soil amendment around peppers , squash and tomatoes instead and it seemed to work great, it really conditioned the soil nicely and broke up the clumps of dirt around the roots. So in the end this also seems to have been a tremendous value. Only time will tell. My second attempts at this was the coarse grade of vermiculite same application, basically I cultivated the product into the base of the garden plants. The idea here is to amend the soil slightly so as to reduce the need to water as much. ... show more

  • Wonderful fine grade vermiculite
Size: 15 lbs.
Such fine grade vermiculite works beautifully in homemade seed starting mix. It is also perfect for covering the tops of the seed trays or cells so fungus gnats can’t get into the soil to lay their eggs. Product well worth the price.

  • Heads up to gardeners...this is fine, not coarse.
Size: 15 lbs.
When geared toward gardeners, vermiculite is usually sold by estimated volume (quarts or cubic feet) rather than weight, which is not terribly accurate given how much it settles. For an apples to apples price comparison, I always compare product weight for the best deal. This usually serves me well. When I bought this, it was the best deal on Amazon for 15 lbs of gardening vermiculite (note, the price has since been raised considerably). Then the box arrived, and it was so small compared to what I was used to for this weight, I thought maybe it had been split into two packages. Unfortunately, no. Gardeners' vermiculite is normally a very coarse grade, thus I'm used to 15 lbs filling at least 2 cubic feet. This is very fine and not suited to raised bed gardening. I won't return it, as it will be useful for other purposes, such as rooting cuttings, or dusting atop surface-sown seeds. The fault is mine for not inquiring as to the grade of the vermiculite before purchasing. Again, there is nothing wrong with the product and it does have its applications, but be aware that this is NOT the coveted coarse grade vermiculite sought by gardeners. *edited to add* Uncool when sellers five-star their own products to inflate ratings. ... show more
