Top Amazon Reviews

  • Overrated, poor quality control
Style: No. 8
The design is definitely simple and easy to figure out, so from that standpoint it's good for knife beginners or as a gift for people. The locking collar and how it helps keep it closed can be a good safety feature around kids. It's also got a benign-looking design to it (doesn't look tacticool) so it isn't (as) scary to people if you have this out to peel an apple. The handle is ergonomic and fits well in the hand without any hot spots, but being very cylindrical might not be comfortable or give the best grip for everyone, especially people with smaller hands or shorter fingers. Unfortunately none of the examples I received (I ordered multiple sizes to try out) had consistently sharpened edges all the way to the tip. Every single blade had one side where the edge wasn't sharpened all the way up, usually by 1-1.5cm and it was always the left face of the blade (something about the equipment at the factory perhaps, or a bias introduced by most factory workers being right-handed). It appears all of them were pretty carelessly sharpened, even though the company's promotional videos say every single one is inspected by a person before leaving the factory. The stainless steel is a pretty "soft" steel, so it wasn't very hard to actually grind out an edge on those missed parts by hand on a stone, but certainly not really great to have to do that for how much people rave about these. People otherwise say these are very sharp out of the box, but none of ones I received were really all that sharp. The steel is soft enough that I got them to hair-shaving sharp in ~10 minutes. I could see the burr flake off as a thin metal wire or as little flakes very easily during the process as well. Easy to sharpen, but this means the edge probably doesn't last that long. Otherwise, from a usage standpoint, it's a thin blade and the shape really emphasizes the sudden turn of the belly after the flat part . This makes it a slight bit trickier to sharpen for novices, along with the subtle dip in the flat part of the blade, so one should pay special attention to those spots that 1) you're catching them on your stone and 2) you're not changing your angle on them. In general the characteristics unsurprisingly lend themselves well to cutting food so these make for a better picnic knife. I know people talk about using these for camping/backpacking but I wouldn't trust this blade for something like that. The blade will likely bend based on the steel's softness (makes it easy to sharpen quickly though) or even snap, and the wood handle is prone to swelling in wet conditions making it difficult to to open the blade. Moreover there's no way this can be used with one hand to open/close. I wouldn't trust this for anything more than light use. If you really want something lightweight that you can trust but isn't expensive, I would spend a little more on a Kershaw or CRKT, or if you really want to be able to trust your knife go for a Spyderco or Benchmade. These are probably knives I'd pack in a picnic basket, or use to teach someone some basics about handling knives, but I wouldn't really trust them for more of an application beyond that. I don't think I would use a blade with this shape to teach someone how to sharpen though. The value is okay for the money but they're definitely overrated compared to the actual quality/quality control you receive. I can't comment on longevity yet, but the feel/weight of the wood and how the blade is pinned in doesn't give me much confidence, and I suspect this knife will last with light applications, but not much beyond that. SUMMARY/TLDR: It's not a terrible knife, and it's simply acceptable. If it were me, I'd spend an additional 10-20 dollars and get an American-made knife that's got better quality control, better blade steel and handle material, is actually sharp out of the box, has a more modern and usable design, and that I'd be able to trust on something more substantial than a picnic in the park. ... show more

  • Great Food Preparation Knife.
Style: No. 8
Like these knives from Opinel. The blade lock feature does it's job of protecting your fingers from accidental closure. The INOX stainless blade holds an edge remarkably well. Shape thin blade is ideal for food preparation tasks around camp or in your kitchen.

  • Great pocket knife
Style: No. 6
As soon as I got it, I couldn't stop handling and playing with it. I really love how simple it all is. The edge was passable but really needed a new one put on. I put on an 18 degree edge and now it's perfect. It is pretty soft and thin steel, be aware this edge will need routine sharpening.

  • Just wanted and inexpensive, simple, well crafted knife.
Style: No. 8
Wasn't looking for an "everyday carry knife". Just wanted a simple and reliable knife laying around as a utility. Doing a little research I got intrigued with the history of this knife. I like its weight and simplicity. It's razor sharp and very durable!
