  • Classic, fantastic, easy to get super sharp
Style: N 06 - 2.76 in (7 cm) Blade
Great knife! So many sizes to choose from. Easy to sharpen. Cheap enough to lose and not cry (maybe a little on the inside). Nice and light. Excellent choice for a picnic knife or a lunch box knife.

  • Old-fashioned design is more than compensated for by an excellent blade!
Style: No. 7
Obviously some people (myself included) love this knife party for its old-fashioned design. But let's face it: These knives would never be as popular as they are if it weren't for the price. Modern features, such as automatic blade locking, blades that open with a positive "snap," etc., make this knife's design seem decidedly outdated in comparison. However, those modern added features come at a cost. If you're after a quality, VERY sharp blade for low cost, this is simply the best deal you'll get (or at least the best I could find). Here's what I love about the knife: * The blade is extremely sharp. It wouldn't shave hair off my arm like my Mora Companion did out of the box, but somehow it actually seems sharper when it comes to actually cutting. It sliced a tomato with just the slightest (less than a 1/16th of an inch) sawing motion to cut the skin. Pruning small branches is like cutting butter. It sharpened a stick with unbelievable ease and smoothness. The blade feels and acts thinner than it actually is (meaning it is stronger than it looks), probably because the entire width of the blade is beveled at apparently the same angle, from the spine right down to the edge. * The whole knife is very lightweight and sleek in the pocket. I don't even know it's there. * The locking mechanism works better and easier than I expected from the photos. It locks the blade both open and closed, and although it has to be done manually, it's easy to twist the collar. It holds the blade open or closed plenty effectively for anything such a knife ought to be used for. * The look and feel is cool. The wood handle has a nice feel and is comfortable to use. The blade is nicely machined and looks well-finished. * Did I mention it's SHARP? With all that said, there are some things I find less appealing: * The all-wood handle makes me hesitant to use the knife for some tougher things that I assume the blade could handle. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have enough confidence in how the blade attaches to the handle to use it for mcuh more than "normal" slicing tasks. * The blade has absolutely no "snap" to it when opening or closing - not even equivalent to an old penknife. It's just a blade on a swivel, and therefore lacks any tactile positivity when opening or closing the knife. * Although the locking mechanism surprised me at its effectiveness, it's only effective if you remember to do it. Although it will doubtlessly become habit with time, I still prefer an automatic lock. It should go without saying that those nitpicks completely disappear when one considers the cost of this knife. Sure, I could (and hopefully someday will) get a $45 Buck pocketknife that will have the modern features I like with a quality blade. But until then, I'm confident that this knife will excel at anything a non-tactical pocketknife should ever be asked to do. Bottom line: If you're after a sharp, quality blade on a budget, this is your buy. ... show more

  • Fantastic pocket knife for the price
Style: No. 8
Bottom line: Is this the worlds best pocket knife? No. But it's unbeatable for the price, in my opinion. The relatively few negative reviews of this knife mostly focus on the blade's tendency to rust. I would point out that this is a carbon steel knife - it absolutely *will* rust if not cared for properly and anyone buying it should expect that. If you want a knife that won't rust, Opinel makes this exact same model in stainless steel, available right here on Amazon for the same price. That said, carbon steel has one big advantage over stainless - a carbon blade can be sharper (if sharpened correctly) and tends to hold an edge better/longer than a stainless blade. Simply oil the blade once in a while, remove any rust promptly, and embrace the inevitable color change in the blade over time (the "patina"), which will help prevent rust. If you aren't willing to do those things, go with stainless steel. For the price, this knife is very well made and functional. The blade is good quality and arrived quite sharp. The beechwood handle is nicely shaped (both ergonomically and aesthetically), and is very lightweight - I can almost forget I have a knife in my pocket. The manually-actuated locking ring can lock the blade both open and closed; the latter is somewhat unique among folding knives but is welcome for me - there is no chance of opening, even partially, in my pocket. This knife does not open and close easily with one hand, but it isn't intended to and that isn't important to me. If it's important to you, look elsewhere. This being my first Opinel knife, I can't comment objectively on longevity; however, from what I see so far it could last a very long time. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great inexpensive knife
Style: No. 8
These opinel knives are simply a knife, not a pry bar or multi tool and are great at their job. The carbon steel will take an extremely sharp edge and with a little maintenance will last a long time. Elegant, simple and makes a great inexpensive gift.

  • Really good for the price, slightly awkward to use
Style: No. 8
I recently got this knife as an addition that is slightly larger/heavier duty than my 50-year-old Uncle Henry. The blade is excellent and is perfectly ground. Mine came with a few tiny dull spots, but that cleaned up very quickly on a extra fine diamond plate followed by a black Arkansas stone. It is very sharp and the blade profile is excellent, and very sturdy. It also seems to hold an edge very well. the steel is really hard. The back side of the blade also had very sharp edges, not burrs but way to sharp to carry around in you pocket. A regular file just skids off, so I knocked off the edges with a aluminum oxide sandpaper. The action and the blade lock work about like it should for brand new. It a little bit awkward to use with the manual rotary blade lock, but it seems secure once you lock it. You definitely give up something for the price, which is very low for as good as it cuts. ... show more
