  • A very nice microscope product.
I am a skin pathologist (dermatopathologist) and am spoiled by the great microscopes (mostly Olympus brand, one Nikon) I use for work. I purchased this OMAX scope for fun, for home use, and for travel purposes, as well as to be able to quickly take digital photos of teaching specimens. I was pleased by the solid build of the microscope. The microscope was easy to assemble, clearly explained by the brief online instruction manual. I have had the microscope for 2 days and tested it with a few slides. The quality was remarkably good for a scope that costs so much less than the professional grade scopes I usually use for work. The model I purchased came with a 10 megapixel camera that I connected to a Macbook Pro. The photos it takes are excellent. Software installation was very easy. When taking pictures, the plane of focus is slightly different for the eyepieces than the camera, so for optimal results, it is best to focus using the computer screen. At first this was difficult, until I figured out that by switching the setting for screen viewing to the lowest resolution setting in the software helps the computer focus MUCH more quickly; the picture can then be taken at a higher resolution (there are separate settings in the software for scanning and for capturing images, so you don't have to switch back and forth). It would have been helpful to have better (any) instructions for how to use the software that came with the microscope on a CD (if there was information on using the software, I missed it). The software allows for capturing very large (25MB) bitmap images that are very detailed or fixed, very low resolution jpg images. I found that I could capture the bitmap (bmp) image, open it in Preview, and save it to a somewhat higher quality intermediate file size jpg format that kept file size small (reducing it from 25MB to 500KB, not as small as the microscope's software's very small jpg around 50KB) while preserving much more of the detail. See the attached relatively small jpg 40x and 10x figures (beautiful, in my humble opinion). I am very happy with the scope. For my work, I like very low power view (2x objective), purchased a 2x objective, and installed it in place of the 100x oil objective that came with the scope. This worked ok, but the condenser on this scope doesn't seem to permit full field illumination of the 2x field, so you may want to just stick with the 4x low power objective that comes with the scope. In contrast, the Olympus scope I use at work has a flip up/down condenser piece that permits full field illumination of the 2x field. Perhaps there is a way to fully illuminate the 2x field, but if there is, I haven't yet identified it. My more expensive microscopes may also have a flatter field of view and a more even distribution of light at low magnification settings (more of an issue for photographs than for ocular viewing), but for practical purposes, this scope seems to do a very nice job. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced microscope, solidly built, with an excellent camera, capable of taking good pictures from 40-400x (I haven't tried the oil immersion lens for even high power views), this scope seems to me like a very good product. ... show more

  • Quick and Easy Set Up
First tried the 3 mp version without any luck. Pictures are crisp and clear. Easy set up on the software. Quality piece of equipment for our small lab.

  • Great microscope for students or professionals
Nice microscope, purchased for a student. I was surprised how well built this model is. It is a little more than the OMAX base model (aka M83ES series), but the stage is larger and the base is wider and as a result the unit feels quite sturdy. The optical quality is better than I expected. The objectives and eyepieces feel hefty and deliver decent images for what they cost. At the highest mag (2500x), you will need to use oil, choke down on the light source's iris and carefully work the focus and stage to get a good image. The LED light source is plenty bright, so even at the highest magnification the image will be well illuminated. The kit came complete with all of the necessary items to get started. Other highlights include being able to use the camera simultaneously with the binocular eyepieces. The focus on the eyepieces was typically close to the camera's focus point, so no major adjustments are needed switching between the two. I can't comment on the customer support since I have not needed to contact anyone at microscopenet. The OMAX website (microscopenet.com) is a bit thin on microscopy related information. Also, I don't get why they do not have all of their manuals available for download without prior knowledge of the download link. A single introductory info sheet came with the unit that had the link to download the manual (also included was a CD for the camera software and manual). I will say that the manuals for the microscope and the imaging software are thorough and well written in clear English with plenty of illustrations. The camera works well and I do agree that the refresh rate at the high resolution is a bit slow, 1-2 frames/sec, but realistically, that is to be expected as 10MP AND high frame rates are expensive and not many people are willing to pay extra for that. A simple work around is to keep the resolution low during set up, then switch over to hi-res when you are ready to take pictures. I like the software package that came with the camera (Toupview). It has tons of features BUT only if you run it on Windows (or a Windows virtual machine in Linux) as the Linux and Mac versions are less feature rich. Hey, kudos anyway for having native versions for the other operating systems. Overall, I am quite happy with this model and would buy it again. Overall, I would say this is a great microscope for a student and it would prove competent for professional use. ... show more

  • This is a nice scope. Great quality
This is a nice scope. Great quality. But the camera is kind of a joke. white balance is no good with red and green glare. I would recommend buying the trinocular scope without the camera either using an iPhone mount on the ocular and or investing in another camera. I've also used my Canon DSLR camera on the camera mount with a cheap adapter from amazon and it works very well. Even the cheap DSLR camera like a canon t3i would be better than the camera included in this kit. ... show more

  • Better than anticipated
I am a retired physician who wanted a reasonable scope to demonstrate microorganisms in pond water for teaching. I also wanted to do an occasional gram stain. I was impressed by the good para-focal objectives (ability to go from one objective to the next and be near focus). The oil immersion lense is better than expected. The camera is reasonable. The software is great on windows 10 and could not get it to work on Ubuntu (linux). ... show more

Microscope itself is perfect and high quality but 10MP digital camera is a joke. The quality of the camera is horrible and frame rate is maybe 1 or 2 frames per second. I probably should have taken the 1.5MP microscope set.
