  • Inexpensive (check the competition) and excellent functionality.
While you can easily find much more expensive wood vises, the added functions of larger screws, a built-in dog and heavier construction isn't necessary for the occasional woodworker. I purchased this for a portable worktop I've designed for convenient movement around the garage, shop or home. This vise is sturdy, well priced and will meet the need of hobbyist and frequent handyman alike. If the gods of woodworking are willing and I finish the worktable this summer I'll come back and add a video later. ... show more

  • Good Budget Vise
The vise is good for the price. It will work well for my needs doing home projects and just having fun making stuff with wood in the garage. It will be mounted to a homade 2'x4' work table using bolts. The smooth surfaced slide rods can be screwed out for vise disassembly. The only strike I will give this vise is due to the partly inaccurate measurements stated in the descriptions. The jaws open to only 6" not 7.5" from front inside jaw surface to rear inside jaw surface. The jaw width is 6" not 6.5". (See photos). But this vise still has a wider jaw grip than some of the other brands. I rate this vise at 4 stars mostly because of the misleading or at least the inaccurate measurements portrayed. In A nutshell, it's a great vise for someone trying to be frugal with their money like me. ... show more

  • Great little vice, especially for the price
2/3 the cost of a Yost clamp. yeah it's a little rougher on the casting but easy to install. I added some wood blocks on each face to protect the wood piece I'm working on. One negative, needed to remove the cotter pin at the end to take it apart for a proper install. The cotter snapped when i bent the legs back. Not a big deal, just replaced it but the manufacturer needs to realize you have to remove that cotter pin to take it apart so you can install a wood face and also to install in the side of a work bench. ... show more

  • No Metal Dog And Loose Guides
This vise is solidly made, heavy, relatively easing to attach and install to pretty much any bench, wide enough to hold many things big and small, and pretty inexpensive. However, I have 2 big issues with it: 1. No metal dog! Despite the description and picture stating it has a built-in dog, it does not. Apparently, whoever made the listing for this vise copied and pasted it from somewhere else. If you need a dog, you'll have to build it into the vise. 2. Boy howdy are the guides arms loose! What else can I say about this really. All in all, I will use this vise for the time being. I will probably replace it with a better crafted vise when I get the money. I will say that, when I do, I am not throwing it away. I can break the vise down and use the components in a DIY vise or some other project. All else fails, I will tie rope to it and use it to do some bicep curls. ... show more

  • Don't think you can beat it for the price.
With all the comments saying that there was no dog I was a bit skeptical but for $16.48 even with no dog I'd consider it a great deal. When mine arrived it DID in fact have the dog and it was apparently a newer model (even though it still had the same 38-736 model number) as the box stated 6 1/2" instead of 6" and it measured out at 6 1/2" (the product details do say 6 1/2"). It took some cleaning to remove the oil on the rods. Even after removing the oil it still operated smoothly. If I ever have any issues I'd simply apply some stick wax instead of oil. The dog was a bit rusty and I'm not sure it will be useful anyway unless your bench thickness is only about 2 1/4" which is the measurement from the base mounting surface to the top of the vise. While they say it mounts to the face of your bench and there are 2 countersunk holes on the back face for this there are also 4 countersunk holes on the base mounting surface for attaching from below. As mentioned those mounting holes are not large (a 3/16" drill bit fits easily in them and has some wiggle room). The front face on mine had 2 threaded holes for attaching a jaw pad while the rear face had 2 non-threaded holes for this purpose. The metal handle for operating the vise has a nice feature of a thick rubber O-ring at each end that can be moved to keep the handle positioned wherever you want it. ... show more
