Wanted a small pocket knife - this fits the bill perfectly. Just the right size for your pocket - good craftsmanship - easy to pull blade out when needed. Glad I made this purchase.

I had to leave my old one at TSA. 😢 so I wanted another one that size and quality. Was not disappointed. Even came sharp.

  • Looks like a decent enough simple pocket knife
Style: 104OT Small Canoe (Box)
For some reason this knife appears in my Amazon purchases and they keep wanting me to review it, only I never saw it, as in I never ordered it, doubt I ever would as it doesn't feature any particular preferred feature I would want to have in a personal pocket knife, and isn't exactly my style anyway, a bit too rustic and old-timey styled and all. I can't say I ever ordered it as a gift either, and seriously doubt I would, as for that I would probably go with a Victorinox mini pocket knife, or for outdooring, something with a saw blade and such. I hope nobody managed to use my Amazon account to order themselves a nice pocket knife. But if you just want a good blade or two in a pocket knife and like the styling, it looks like a well-made pocket knife to me. And it's stainless steel, which would be my preference for a pocket knife, as maybe carbon steel can have and hold a sharper edge, BUT seriously in a pocket and not in a nice dry kitchen drawer or kept on a knife rack you would probably end up having a serious rust problem with a carbon steel pocket knife, so I would pretty much 100% say that stainless steel is the way to go for a pocket knife. Which this is. I know pocket knifes fairly well, and just for what I can see here it looks like a pretty good quality one. Maybe there is some advantage to paying more for Buck Knife, but if there is one I don't know what that is. If I was looking for this type of style I would save my money and just go for this one. Looks every bit as good as a Buck Knife to me! ... show more

  • Best "dress" knife I have ever owned and my first stainless
Style: 104OTCP Small Canoe (CP)
From before I started grade school until I graduated high school I carried a 10mm, 3 blade pocket knife. Great for jeans, bit heavy for slacks and suits, so with my first "non-jeans" job, I switched to the 7mm Old Timer. Learned to sharpen knives at age 5, kept them razor sharp, clean, and oiled. I used them until the blade was too worn to file down the kick enough to hide the blade inside the handle. Have 10mm knives going back to 1950s and 7mm knives going back to early 1960s. So long as I can carry a pocket knife, if available, it will be an Old Timer. ... show more

  • Not the same...
Style: 104OT Small Canoe (Box)
I have an "original" 1040 as well as one of these new 1040s (I thought the original was lost, ordered a new one as a replacement, then I found the original). This means I don't need to compare this new knife against a memory of the original. In a way, that actually makes this new knife more disappointing. Is it sturdy? Sure. Will it last for years? Yeah, I assume so. Is it pleasant to use? No, it isn't. Here's where most of my disappointment sits. As others have mentioned, the blades are super hard to open. In fact, considering how scratchy the opening of blades was when I first unboxed this thing (metal on metal) I have to assume no oil of any kind was applied to this knife before packaging. After opening and closing blades a number of times and watching metal shavings fall out of the knife, I pulled out a bottle of Hoppes gun oil and gave the knife a dose. Mild improvement, but it's still horribly difficult to open. And perhaps I shaved off too much metal before applying oil, but the large blade doesn't "snap" into open position solidly. On my original, both blades open smoothly and easily and there's a satisfying "clunk" when they snap to their open positions. There's just nothing finessed about this newer 1040. In every way other than solidity, it seems...unresolved. At the risk of having my review dropped, I'll say if you care about the finesse of the older 1040s, buy one used that may need some cleanup and clean it. You'll probably be happier and it won't cost much more than a new 1040. If you don't care and just want a tiny knife that has a few blades, this one might work for you. I'll keep it as a backup or as a knife to loan someone that wants to whittle along with me by a campfire, but my daily carry is going to be my original. ... show more
