  • My favorite strings
Very soft strings that produce a warm, beautiful sound. They're a little pricey, but when it comes to the violin and getting the most out of it, you get what you pay for. I always have a spare set of these for my nicer violin (the practice violin has dominant pros).

  • Favorite strings
I love these so much I bought an extra set. The strings are so warm and expressive. They don't sound muddy in higher positions. And I cannot sing enough praise for the gold E string!!! This E is the best E I've ever used. It's so clear it just sings!! The E holds its tune way better than G D and A. I've had to adjust those a lot at the beginning while they stretched but the E is so perfect, I've not had to adjust it more than once or twice. Even if I decide to try other strings someday, I might stick with this E forever. It's so, so, so, SO pretty!! Well worth the investment. ... show more

  • great strings!
I just ordered my second pair of the Obligatos. They are great all around strings; much better than the Corellis I replaced. My first pair of Obligatos lasted a year and a half, then I noticed they weren't as responsive, and became more difficult to play. Actually, I was surprised they lasted that long. The new set was easy to break in (tuning stablizied within a week) and they have a great tone. (I think my violin would sound good with a lot of different brands of strings, however the obligatos really make a subtle difference to me, especially on sustained notes). They can make a really good violin sound great. I know they are expensive, but they last longer than traditional gut strings, and I love that they stay in tune. I ordered mine through Johnson String Instruments, and I received them within a week of ordering them. (I know JSI was a few dollars more than their competitors, but they have great service--this is my third order from them and I intend to order from them in the future.) I wouldn't put the obligatos on a student level violin, but if you have a fairly decent violin ($5000-10,000 range) they are worth the price. If I could afford to change them out more frequently, I would, but they still sound great after a year and a half of playing about 10 hours per week. ... show more

  • Obligato violin strings
I purchased a new violin online, mid-range price, and thought I would try playing it in comparison with the student violin that I had been playing and had outgrown. The new violin looks beautiful, except the strings were cheap and sounded so terrible. I ordered and put these Obligato strings on. What a difference! The sound is wonderful and it also improves the playability with the bow. I definitely would recommend these strings. It is most assuredly worth the cost. I am purchasing another set as a spare set. ... show more

  • warm & rich - one of the best strings - you can't go wrong here
almost no break in time, warm, rich, loud, passionate - everything I want in a string is right here. Was afraid of the Pirastro Evah Pirazzi 4/4 Violin String Set - Medium Gauge - Steel Ball-End E set but may try them next to see what all the fuss is about. Makes such a HUGE difference in sound over cheaper strings, it's amazing. Gold E does tend to squeak - just play that E more confidently and you'll get rid of the squeak. JUST GET THEM! Especially if you have a semi-decent fiddle. You'll be so happy you did. ... show more

  • DON'T LIKE THE OBLIGATO VIOLIN STRINGS
I put a new set of the Obligatos on my medium ($5,000) priced violin because of all the hype and praise from other users but I did not like them at all. They took 2 days to stretch out and after they were stretched I found them be neither warm nor mellow and the "D" had a raspy sound. However the Obligato gold "E" does sound quite good. I replaced the Obligato G-D-A with new Dadarrio Helicores and what a difference, the Helicores produce a much more even and warm sound than the expensive Obligatos. ... show more

  • Yes it is really great deal!
This set of strings allowed me to uncover the beautiful sound on my new very good violin - that came from the seller unfortunately with a cheaper strings. My conclusion was that having spent more than $1.5K on a violin it makes big sense to spend a bit more money and buy the best strings and enjoy your sound... ... show more
