  • Great little filter with heater
Style: Filtosmart Thermo 200
I have the Filtosmart 200 on my 29 gallon freshwater tank. This filter is a different design than most canister filters. It is not the traditional cake layout. I suggest you read the directions before doing anything. If you purchase one with the heater, you will find that the heater reduces the amount of bio-media one can put in the filter. To compensate I chose Seachem Bio Matrix. Because of the high surface area Matrix has you do not have to use a lot. Using media bags, I placed 2 about 1 cup worth each (which is more than double what the instructions for Matrix state) in the bio media compartment of the filter on either side of the heater. Priming is done by filling the filter via the heater opening. Don't worry heater is easy to remove. Remember to use tank or de-chlorinated water to fill the filter. Miss having a primer button, but then I thought it is one thing I do not have to worry about wearing out. Just moved fish and plants from my 50 gallon into the 29. The filtosmart cleaned up the tank within several hours. The heater does have a calibration adjustment which is nice. Down side of having the heater in the filter is that you can not unplug the filter without first unplugging the heater so that it can cool down. Usually takes about 20 minutes. The same is true when you start the filter again. I always give filters a 24 hour window when I first start them to let the air bubbles out. Initially I could hear the filter, but now It is very quiet. I have it in my bedroom and I do not like noise when I sleep. Tip: I always put some silicone around any gasket that a filter has in order to prevent leaks and extend the life of the gasket. This filter has 3 compartments divided by 2 removable plastic dividers. This lets you configure it however you want. It comes with a coarse sponge, finer sponge that the strainer for the motor fits into, 2 bags of ceramic noodles, and 2 bags of charcoal. I have plants in my tanks so I do not use charcoal. Did not care for their bio media. Additionally, the instructions tell you to pour it in around the heater. I think it is easier to clean when in bags. Good 3 year warranty. ... show more

  • Filter is good, don't expect miracles with the heater
Style: Filtosmart Thermo 100
I primarily bought this filter for the size and for the built-in heater. I had a specific space I could fit my filter into, and this was the right size for my 22g long. It keeps the water clear and is very very quiet. Setup was simple, and I think the priming method is very easy. I actually like it better than my "self-priming" filter on another tank. The heater... works? As in, it generates some heat and actually does an okay job during the day. But I think I'm asking too much of a 100w heater. I have no lid, and my house is usually 66-69F at night, so the heater can't keep up. During the day, if my house is 72, it can raise it to 78 or so if it's turned all the way up. But it just gets too low, and I don't like having the thing cranked to 90. So I did end up having to purchase a second heater to go in the tank to actually keep it the 79° I wanted. But I do like having the backup in the filter in case something happens to the primary in-tank heater. So it's a good peace of mind. I also don't like the method of attachment with the suction cups. I would have preferred clamps. Overall, the water is clear and it's very quiet, but the heater isn't amazing because I suspect flow around it isn't perfect. The flow is good given the size. ... show more

  • Love this hidden heater design
Style: Filtosmart Thermo 100
This works well. Bought for a 20 gal tank and I wish I’d gotten the next size up. It provides a moderate flow, but I think my fish would enjoy stronger. Heater is inaccurate so you have to keep an eye on it with a thermometer. But it does solidly maintain the heat level once set.

  • Works well
Style: Filtosmart Thermo 100
Works good but at the price point fluval 207 just kills it in features, useful ones. The heater in my unit is pretty awful, I could wake up to a 70 degree or an 80 degree tank, got rid of that fast. 207 has rotating barbs, and a lever latch for the hoses, Oase has fixed barbs and a push and twist lock for the hoses(all them tidy hose runs are going bye bye next cleaning time). The Oase works well, and is quite quiet, but to me for the price point I'd honestly rather have another 207 ... show more

  • Great product
Style: Filtosmart Thermo 300
The thing I like the most about this filter is it does a great job and it's especially quiet. The thing I didn't like is how it was advertised as very easy to clean which is simply not true. I would definitely still recommend it to anybody that has an aquarium because it is a super products there's no other area that it disappointed me -- other than the ease of cleaning. I most likely would have been OK with that if it had come with instructions or anybody out there made a YouTube video showing you how to do it unfortunately there isn't any Instruction that exists-- at least not that I could find. ... show more
