  • Turned Out Great
Color: Caribou Slobber Brown Ale
I bought this with some trepidation about whether I could really make beer that was good. I've cooked for years and always follow new recipes exactly the first time. So I approached this the same way and followed the instructions exactly. After I put the beer in the fermenter I wasn't really sure what to expect. It started bubbling the 2nd day and a large foam formed on top of the liquid. After a week the bubbling had completely stopped the foam subsided. I had the fermenter in a cabinet in my basement which was around 68F. The next week there wasn't much to see as it lay looking dormant. At 2 weeks I bottled the beer. A week and a half later I tried one of the beers and it tasted great with a good head on the beer. It tasted to me very similar to Big Sky's Moose Drool. I will definitely be making more beers. Norther Brewer's kit was great. I made sure to tighten the spigot and test it for leaks. I had to put quite a bit of pressure to get it tight enough. I did mess up a couple of bottle caps before I got the feel and now it's pretty easy. I highly recommend this. ... show more

  • Cracked fermenter
Color: American Wheat
When I checked the fermenter this morning to see if the bubbling had started in the airlock, I found a little bit of liquid around the outside of the fermenter. When I twisted the spigot to tighten the gasket, it caused more beer to leak out. The glass around the spigot had cracked. Mike immediately reached out and will send a new fermenter and another beer kit. Mike's quick response impressed me. I would gladly purchase from Northern Brewer in the future. ... show more

  • First day after brewing
Color: Irish Red Ale
I was unable to get a 1 gallon recipe in my first request for one. The recipe I received was for the 5 gallon. In an auto reply to my first question I was asked not to send more than 1 question a day. As a beginner to brewing this was not helpful in that I had several questions. I also asked what was that item above with no reply yet. I went with Amazon because of the speed of shipping over Northern Brewing. Today is the day after brewing. The smell while cooking the wort was great. I have some yeast activity going on this morning which is fun to see and also reassureing. I would recommend this for a beginner. In the future I'll still use the 1 gallon fermenter since I live in a small house and price for addtional brew kits is good. ... show more

  • awesum, sneaks up on you
Color: Caribou Slobber Brown Ale
I confess I didn't let this one age properly, got into it after only 10 days, because I considered my abuse of the process to be a complete disaster, but I thought, oh well let's see what happened here. From what was supposed to be a 1 gal recipe, I managed to rescue three little 1L bottles, stuck them in the temp controlled room for 10 days , and kissed them off. But as I am an old timer and know the miracles that yeast can achieve, I tried one. NUCLEAR. I was totally trashed. I tried to stand up and literally fell on my face! So if you do this one, please WATCH IT. Let it rest for 2 wks at least to lose the last trace of sweetness, but then GLORY HALLELUIAH!! ... show more

  • Considering Home Brewing?
Color: Caribou Slobber Brown Ale
I have been considering trying my hand at home brewing for a while now since I LOVE craft beers. After looking through all of the starter kit options I decided to give small batch brewing a try. This kit contains everything needed to brew 1 gallon of beer, except the bottles. Here are some great features to this kit: 1. The kit includes everything needed to brew your own beer. 2. The price is awesome for anyone who is unsure whether they want to try their hand at brewing or not. Also very reasonable price for a gift. 3. Pick your style of beer. There are several options, and the selection of small batch recipe kits offered by Northern Brewer is ASTOUNDING! 4. Easy to follow instructions AND a DVDs guide. Seriously, if you can make Mac 'N Cheese you can brew your first batch of beer. So, look no further if you are considering home brewing. This is a purchase you will not regret! ... show more

  • Easy to use brewing kit!
So, I've never brewed before. I figured it'd be really difficult and would be something I'd have to tinker with for quite a while. Not so! This kit came with some very easy to follow instructions and really good and useful tips. They go about telling you how to mix everything, where to store it, how to check if it spoiled, etc.. The kit also doesn't force you to buy their own proprietary products to make another batch, it simply just tells you what you need, and what to replace once you're done. Mine is sitting in my closet, brewing away, so when it's done, I'll hopefully come back and leave a review on how it went! I'm happy I went with the kit, super easy, not a bad price and really gives you an idea if this is a good hobby for you, without spending a couple hundred bucks. ... show more

  • Fairly upset, considering how seriously places are supposed to take homebrewing.
Color: Caribou Slobber Brown Ale
I've never done any type of homebrewing before, so I figured I'd get a pre-made kit so I could get an understanding of the why and how this works. Went to open the inside box and, much to my surprise, there seemed to be something loose inside it. Turns out over half of the Small Batch Grain Blend had spilled out because the bag they used wasn't actually closed. I'm still going to try and make it using what's there, but I'm not really expecting great results considering how particular homebrewing is supposed to be. If it turns out fine, awesome, but I'm still incredibly upset with this. ... show more
