  • Good tire but not for high-torque vehicles.
This is the same size as oem 20" tires for the Rivian r1t and r1s. Nokian has some guidance on their website for this being a proper application for the Rivian platform and guidance on a 60psi cold setting (LT tires require higher psi than a standard tire at the same load rating). These replaced oem Pirelli Scorpian A/T with 35k mi on them (worn down to 2/32"). The Pirellis are silent when new but quickly develop a humming/warbling noise after 8k mi. The Pirellis are decent with wet and dry grip and have decent steering response and decent efficiency. They're an overall mediocre tire lacking in sidewall puncture resistance which was a priority in choosing the Nokians. The Nokian Outposts are difficult to roadforce balance below 40lbs and with almost perfect wheels I was able to balance them down to roadforces of 17lbs, 26lbs, 34lbs, and 37lbs with all requiring dismounts and remounts. The Nokians are 11lbs heavier than the stock tires and immediately induced a high frequency steering wheel vibration not present even with the highly worn out Pirellis. The Nokians have great grip offroad and cushy over bumps, good straight-line driving. That's about where the pros end with these tires on the Rivian platform. Straight-line acceleration feels at minimum 1/2sec slower to 60mph due partly to tire weight but also to the overall road grip. The Rivian detects wheel slip instantaneous and reduces torque output many times per second per tire. This essentially means acceleration is limited by tire grip before max power is reached. In fact the whole time I had the Nokians I never saw full power output until over 40mph. At highway speeds like interstate driving, quick lane changes can be outright scary. You turn the steering wheel, wait a moment, front moves one way, rear shifts the other way, then turning begins. Essentially the steering response is horrible. Add in acceleration while turning and the Nokians totally lose it, completely overwhelmed by the weight/power of the Rivian. I think these tires would be OK for a dual motor Rivian or other vehicles under 500hp but they are totally unable to manage the power possibilities of the Rivian quad motor setup. ... show more
