  • Perfect for mini ITX boards
Perfect for mini ITX boards and cases where CPU height is limited. It is still effective though. It may not offer the best cooling, it would be against the laws of physics with that small fan and blades but it's decent performance and especially its low noise will make lots of people happy.   • Is better in every way than the stock Intel socket 1700 cooler
Ignore the few oddball reviews claiming this cooler is inferior or no better than the OEM stock Intel 12th cooler. They did something wrong. Under identical conditions The Noctua NH-L9i results in temps around 10 degrees cooler than the Intel cooler AND with much less noise. With a six core i5-12400F running various CPU stress tests I couldn't get the CPU over 66C vs 75C with the Intel cooler. With a 8+4 core i7-12700F the Noctua kept it under 85C vs 95C with the stock cooler. I tested with the motherboard in open air under identical conditions. Your temps might vary with your case cooling but the fact is the Noctua outperforms the stock Intel cooler and is quieter while doing it. And that should always hold true. The Intel cooler has a round contact area that only makes contact with perhaps 60%-70% of the rectangular CPU heat spreader. That's just brain dead on the part of Intel. The Noctua cooler makes contact with the entire heat spreader which helps it remove significantly more heat. Further Intel puts stupid cosmetic plastic trim on their cooler which likely only further inhibits airflow. It's classic marketing department form over function. The difference in noise is huge. At any RPM the Noctua is much quieter. Even at full speed (a still low 2400 rpm) the Noctua is impressively quiet and it's subjectively a much more pleasant noise than the jet spooling up for take off noise of the Intel cooler at 100%. The NH-L9i also fit my very cramped mini-ITX Gigabyte Z690 motherboard beautifully. You can also get the Noctua fan shroud kit for some applications so it can pull cool outside air giving it another huge advantage over the Intel and other coolers. The Noctua also provides downward airflow that gets directed over the motherboard chipset, SSD, VRM, RAM, and other parts that really benefit from and are designed around a downflow OEM style heatsink airflow. Those complaining about the mounting tabs not being flush with the motherboard don't understand the need to tension the heatsink to the CPU. The whole idea is to use the mounting tabs as springs to create the perfect tension for the best CPU contact without over-stressing anything. It's a very smart design that creates the right amount of contact force when the arms "bottom out" against the motherboard. Overall this is a great cooler for a great many applications. If you want to run an over clocked K series CPU you likely need a bigger cooler. But for compact small form factor builds, this is the best cooler I know of and genuinely shames Intel's provided cooler. ... show more

  • Noctua Coolers are my go-to.
I always use Noctua CPU coolers on my machines. They're also my go-to for case fans on high performance builds. Some people were put off by the beige/brown fans but I've always favored performance over looks. Happily, they now have black-chrome and dark fans so no reason not to use them!!

  • Better than stock in every way
Gives me a solid 10C+ drop over the Intel stock cooler at load on my 13100. The fan is also super quiet even at full speed whereas the stock has a terrible whine. It's a bit pricy for such a small cooler and I wish Noctua made something just a tiny bit taller than this for my Silverstone SG13 case but overall it did what I wanted it to do. ... show more

  • Nice low profile and quiet but a pain to mount
This cooler is nice and low profile, and it's really quiet. Cooling seems to be adequate, but I'm using it on a pretty low end CPU so can't say how it would do with an i5 or i7. I suspect it would not be adequate for an i7, but maybe for an i5. It's is great quality as one would expect from Noctua. However, the mounting system for this cooler is a PITA. You have to hold the cooler in place and thread nuts in from the back of the motherboard. You can't just sit it down on top of the nuts or cooler either that doesn't work. On top of this the holes that the screws go into are at least 1/8" off the top of the motherboard. So, makes it difficult to line up. I feel like they should have had studs go down through the holes on the motherboard if they were going to have it screw in from the back side. That would also serve to prevent over tightening. As it is designed, you could very easily over tighten and damage your cpu. ... show more

  • Fits in a 1U Case... kind-of
Bought this to use in an in-win 1U case (IW-RA100-S315). Because the 1U case uses shorter-than-average standoffs for the motherboard, the included noctua mounting screws (which are like thumbscrews) do not fit in such a case. To work around this in a 1U, you will need m3x10mm (+/-2mm) screws with matching plastic washers, then be careful on mounting torque. You will also need to remove the slim fan. Because of this, you'll have to make sure you get adequate cross-flow though the heatsink to keep your CPU temperature under control. I'm only using with an i3-12100 (30-65wtdp) and a pair of 40mm case fans which I crudely ducted to the side of the heatsink. Temperature is adequate. ... show more
