Update (2/15/23): Used this 5A Noco on my car battery the other day. The battery is 4 years old, and the car gets drive at most, once a week, so not ideal for battery health. Once a year (annually), I try to charge the battery. When I hooked it up, and ran it in normal charging mode, it quickly finished (within five minutes). I switched over to repair mode, which applies a small pulsing current, and ran it for two cycles (repair mode shuts off after 4 hours), so 8 hours total. Using a battery tester (measures battery resistance), the overall health improved after 8 hours. So the repair mode definitely does something different than the regular charging mode. Summary: I have had a NOCO Genius G3500 charger since 2017, and it's a great charger. Recently started building a solar/PV battery bank from old marine (Optima) bluetop deep cycle batteries. So the G3500 was getting a good workout, especially the repair function. So I will be comparing this next generation GEN5X1 in that role. I had ordered the GEN5X1 back in April 2021, and this past Black Friday, the GENIUS5 (5A) was on sale, so I decided to add that one. Also use the Kyzee Load Tester frequently while charging, so listing this that as well as a related product. Testing: On an old really dead Yuasa motorcycle battery. Impressively, it was at 3-4 volts, and the Noco started right up in regular (not repair) mode. Going to let this run a couple of days, and see where it ends up (not expecting it to revive this one). Recommendations: 1) In general, the slower you charge the battery the better it is for the overall longevity and lifespan of the battery. The trade off being that you might have to charge a really dead battery for a couple of days. For batteries less than 100AH (the Optima I was testing on is 55AH), a 5-AMP charger is a good middle ground. 2) Having a good battery tester is also a must, I can recommend either of the two below. Pros: Good fit & finish; repair function; name brand recognition; constant product improvement. Cons: None for now. Conclusion: At $70, rating this 5-stars. If you need onboard mounting, get the onboard model instead.     • Revived my battery

I bought a used 2022 Honda Ridgeline with ~7,000 miles on it some months back. It was a "dealer demo car" and was well-maintained as a result. Now, it's got around 12,000 miles on it. One day, I left the lights on too long with the ignition off, and had the radio playing. Stupid on my part, but my battery didn't have enough charge to deliver the amps needed to turn the engine over. I bought a Noco GB40, and it worked well - it'd start my truck when needed. Yesterday, it didn't. I guess the battery had degraded too much, so I was shopping for new batteries when the sticker shock hit me. Given the age of my truck, I thought it would be silly to replace the battery. Someone recommended the Noco Genius5, so I gave it a shot. Amazon's same-day delivery got it to me quickly, and I basically hooked it up to the battery, plugged it in, set it to AGM mode, and let it go to work. I waited several hours for the charger light to show "solid green", indicating it was fully charged. I started up my truck; it sounded better than the day I bought it. However, on the dash, it had a note about an "emissions problem". My scan tool showed a permanent code with the Transmission Control Module and a bunch of other temporary codes. Since I didn't have any codes before, I figured I may have freaked out the electronics by charging the battery while the battery was hooked up to the truck, or maybe by touching the terminals out of sequence when removing the cables. Either way, I removed the battery from my truck, hooked up the Genius5, and set it to "repair mode". My truck had low mileage when I bought it, at about a year old, which likely meant that it say for a while when not in use. Maybe that could have led to sulfation or stratification, which could have meant it wouldn't charge as effectively from the alternator. I also wanted to remove the battery to allow the computers to reset in the truck. If it was still throwing codes after that, I'd bring it into the dealer. This morning, when I woke up, I noticed the Genius5 was in standby mode, meaning the repair mode had finished. I started the Genius5 back up, and set it to AGM mode again -- it took about a minute, but it said the battery was good to go with a solid green light. I Installed the battery back in my truck, fired it up, and I kid you not, it sounded better than ever -- less strained, more powerful, and all of the codes were gone. My truck had a freakout -- not due to this device, I'm sure, but likely due to me doing something stupid. It's rare for me to review a product so quickly. This thing is amazing, has lots of neat accessories available for it, and saved me money. I'll continue using it to prolong my batteries and save me money in the long-run. Though I found the system itself intuitive to use, pressing select gets you to your different 12v options. press and hold if you want 6v. Charged as expected and has performed well. I purchased it for two reasons: 5A output to charge most common batteries and an AGM charge mode. It is compact and sealed unlike my existing 1.5A unit and has longer than expected cables. With 5A it can charge and get into maintain mode quickly. It has nice LEDs for charge status. Some say it gets a little hot (not to me) but in any case that is what you get with 5A output. When in maintenance mode the voltage would drop below 12.5v before it began another top off cycle. I was thinking it would be narrower but noco said normal. ... show more
