  • Works
Style: Solution + Comb
My daughter started scratching her head on Sunday. On Monday morning, we found the lice. I had no idea what to do, this was our first ever encounter with lice. Our pediatrician called in a prescription for a lice treatment, but it wasn't in stock. While I was at the pharmacy, I found this (Nix Ultra). Bought 3 bottles (crazy expensive at there compared to Amazon). I didn't even check my other two daughters, but wasn't taking any chances. Treated our entire family that morning. The solution is easy to use. I saturated everyone's heads, rubbed it in really well so that every, single hair and entire scalp was completely covered. Everyone sat with the stuff on their heads for way longer than the directed 10 minutes while I did everyone. Rinsed it off and dead stuff was falling out of Patient Zero's hair while we rinsed. Washed everyone's hair with dish soap (great tip from other reviewers). Used the included combs to section off and comb out everyone's hair. Didn't really see anything else in anyone's hair at that point. Pulled everyone's bedding, clothing, pajamas, coats, and all towels, etc and started a massive, never-ending laundry party. That took ALL DAY and the laundry wasn't even close to being done. Grabbed clean sleeping bags and extra pillows and had everyone find a spot on the floor to sleep- FAR AWAY FROM ONE ANOTHER- in a not-often used area of the house- I wasn't taking any chances of any live lice crawling from their beds back into their hair. Next day, did quick morning head checks (didn't see anything) and continued laundry. Researched (and could've earned a doctorate by the time I was done) lice removal. Ordered terminator lice combs and a large lighted magnifying glass (the magnifying glass is an important tool that not many people mentioned). That night, I went through everyone's hair, practically strand by strand. One daughter had one live louse and several eggs in one spot. I retreated her head with the Nix ultra immediately. Nothing else crawling in anyone else's heads, but some nits and dead things. Everyone had greasy hair, but that took care of the lice. Washed everyone's bedding again. Moved to another location for sleeping again that night. (Not risking any live lice transferring back to heads). The third day, I combed through everyone's hair again, practically strand by strand, and used the magnifying glass (seriously, get a large, lighted magnifying glass). It took HOURS to do everyone's hair, but totally worth the time. Found a few really small nit eggs that would never have been found if not for the magnifying glass. Hopefully, they were all dead. Nothing crawling. Fourth day, everyone appears to be lice free. I can't imagine that I missed anything, but will continue to check every night and do the retreatment in a few days, just in case. I hope that was our first and only-ever encounter with lice. The stuff works, but definitely comb out thoroughly every night, in case anything was missed. ... show more

  • Easier to use than the other Nix product
Style: 4oz Shampoo
My granddaughter apparently brought home lice after trying on hats at the fair -- yuk! Of course, it spread through the family and came back around again. The 2nd time, I purchased this product because it gets applied to DRY hair. I found it easier to apply this, wait 10 minutes, then step into the shower to rinse it out. Also, although it felt really greasy when I put it on my hair, it rinsed out nicer than the other Nix product that requires you to apply it to already wet hair. It also came with a metal comb. ... show more

  • Only detects ADULT lice, not nits, not eggs. Use only on DRY hair
Style: Electric Lice Comb
This will not work as a stand-alone product. It will not even work for the purpose I bought it for: to check our hair for any nits or eggs that escaped the pesticide treatment. So, this ended up being a waste of money. No where on the listing here on Amazon or on the exterior of the packaging does this tell you that it ONLY detects adult lice. It was only after I cut into the clamshell plastic packaging and read the instructions that I spotted that disclaimer, so I was no longer able to return it to Amazon (I asked). Adult lice are easy to spot - I don't need any help spotting them. They are easy to remove - the cheap lice comb that came in the pesticide treatment kits removes them easily. So, what is this product for, exactly? If you are trying to remove lice without pesticides, this will not help you do that either. By the time an adult lice is big enough to get spotted by this tool, it has already laid dozens of eggs in your hair, and those will all become nits, which become adult lice. Remember that this tool doesn't detect the nits either. It is feasible that the comb will remove them, but if you miss one (and this won't help you to be certain), you allow them to mature, then lay eggs. The cycle won't end. I suspect there is a reason they didn't reveal anywhere that this product DOES NOT FIND NITS OR EGGS; there is no way I would have purchased this had I known. Let's say I found it useful, somehow. You cannot use in on wet hair. Your hair must be dry. If you have ANY wave or curl to your hair, you know that combing it dry is an impossible, painful task. And this comb is very fine, so it's ripping out hair as you attempt to use it. The only people who might find this helpful are those with short, straight, tangle-free hair. That's also NO WHERE stated in the advertisement or on the exterior of the package. I'm really baffled by this product. The only way to hoodwink people into buying it is to withhold information until it is too late, because who is going to refund an opened lice comb? Save your money. You can spot live adult lice without a problem without the fancy electronic component. It's the nits and eggs that are hard to spot. ... show more
