  • For this price, I'd expect something a bit better
First of all, the battery life on most NiteRider products seem to be lacking. I have this taillight, a smaller model and a headlight and inevitably they seem to run out of juice well before i think they ought to. I did a century the other day with this thing on low power (steady) for 9 hours and somewhere around the 7 hour mark, it died. I have a much cheaper disk shaped tail light which I run steady and it lasts much longer. Now days, I carry both - this one has better overall visibility, but when it does give out - and it will - I have the other as a backup. The other thing I dislike about this product is the rubber plug which keeps dirt out of the USB port. After a few weeks of use, that plug doesn't seem to want to fit anymore, so I find myself blowing dirt out of this connection. ALthough it hasn't happened yet, I'm concerned that grit or moisture will affect the charging and ultimately make charging impossible. That has not happened yet, it's just a fear, but the design is deficient - I'd much rather have a "cap" or something that snaps or stretches over a lip with a positive lock to keep dirt and wetness out, than a plug which limply relies on pressure against the sides of a plastic slot. Multiple times, I've thought that plug was seated, but after a 9 mile commute home, I find the plug is loose and dirt is getting into the charging port. NiteRider - stop relying on brand recognition and ramp up your engineering game. These changes aren't hard to make! ... show more

  • Amazingly bright light
When I am on the cycling on the road, I want to be the brightest, most distracting thing a driver can see. I have been using the Bontrager Flare R tail light which is a good light but a friend told me NiteRider made brighter lights than what I was using so I had to buy one and try them out. Pros - this light is BRIGHT. I mean REALLY BRIGHT. If you set it to flash on the brightest setting and look directly into the light you will be seeing spots for a good 30 seconds. I love that about this light. I also like the various patterns the light has preprogrammed. I mainly use the setting of two "regular" flashes then a third super bright flash as I feel that it gives me great daytime visibility without running the battery down too quickly. I also consider this light to be very affordable (I have paid a lot more for a lot less with some other lights). To me, price is not an issue for helmets and lights, I will not complain about the cost of good safety equipment. Cons - The only thing I don't like about this light is the rubber plug that keeps dirt and water out of the USB recharge port. I have several headlights and tail lights that use USB ports for recharging the internal battery and out of all of them, this is my least favorite port cover (it is difficult to push back in after recharging). Unknown - Battery life. So far I have not had a problem with running out of battery life during a ride but I bought this during the winter and my longest ride with this light has only been about 90 minutes. I am looking forward to doing much longer rides with this light and I am hoping it will see me through a 5-6 hour ride. ... show more

  • False Advertising
It's a great product, it's nice and bright, which is exactly what I wanted in today's world of distracted drivers. I love the Niterider brand and have bought many of them in the past, however this product it doesn't get nearly close to the 6.5 hour battery life that the manufacture claims. This is false advertising and is the only reason I'm giving it a one. I bought a pair of these expecting and relying upon them to last as long as the manufacturer states, so much so that I'm considering returning it . ... show more

  • Better pack a backup
I purchased two of these lights (one for myself and one for my girlfriend) and also have the 100. We lost one of the 250s during a ride and the remaining one works for about an hour on a full charge - at best. The 100 lasts a bit longer but you have to fiddle so much with the cable for it to charge that I'm just about to give up on it also and just go back to a cheap AAA powered light - no issue with those dying early on a ride (just replace the battery) or being picky about charging. Huge waste of money. ... show more

  • Bright but short battery life
This tail light has bright flashing modes which I wanted for safety purposes during daytime rides. It can be seen for long distances by cars approaching from the rear, but the battery life is disappointing. After two 1 hour and thirty minute rides using the dimmest flashing mode it needs to be recharged. The manufacture states a 6 hour and thirty minute run time for this mode. I will continue to use it, but if you want something that lasts longer you may want to look elsewhere. ... show more

  • Great Light, unreliable mount
I love these lights, I must because I must have replaced about a half dozen over the past ten years. Luckily about the time I have one bounce out of the mount they come out with a brighter version that I would probably buy anyway. I started drilling a tiny hole in the tab at the bottom of the light and wiring it to my bike and that almost solved the problem but I still lost one, a 100 lumen version. Now I have a small screw holding it to the mount and the mount wired to the bike. Inconvenient but I don't think this one is going anywhere. It doesn't seem like an insurmountable engineering problem to design a mount that would hold the light so it cannot bounce out! ... show more

  • Stopped Working After 2 Rides
This light is fantastically visible when it works! I would give it a strong 5 stars if it worked reliably. This light attracts LOTS of attention, and it made me feel extremely safe when it worked. Unfortunately, the third time I used the light, it started turning off on its own and would not stay on (NOTE: I made sure it was fully charged). I am not sure how long I was on the road without a tail-light. I felt extremely safe on the roads after dark until the light started turning off by itself after two rides. This light would be a strong 5 stars if it worked reliably. ... show more
