  • Great entry-level nightvision scope
Pattern Name: Riflescope
I'm pairing this unit with the WindFire 940nm IR Illuminator sold here on Amazon. After playing with the Night Shot for a few evenings, I have to give it a whole-hearted "thumbs up"! I have a really cheap set of digital night vision goggles and two consumer-grade Gen 1 night vision monoculars. This unit absolutely blows all of them out of the water. Using the internal illuminator, I can easily identify objects across the canyon where I live (at least 200 yards, probably closer to 300). Using the WindFire at its "spotlight" setting, I probably gain 20% in light and clarity at long distance (not much difference at 100 yards or less). As well, using the external illuminator allows me to extend the battery life in the Night Owl scope. I absolutely love the simplicity of the scope. Several of my neighbors have more expensive digital NV scopes. They get only slightly better pictures but are saddled with all of the bells and whistles (recording features, bluetooth, etc.) that require them to work with multiple menus and sub-menus. Drives them absolutely nuts. With the Night Shot, I turn it on, select the reticle and brightness (which are saved until the batteries are changed) and start shooting. Heck, by pure luck, the scope was even dead-on right out of the box. First shot bullseye. No adjustment necessary. As others have noted, battery life can be pretty short . However, in the user's favor: 1) using an external IR increases battery life, 2) it does work with rechargeable AA's, and 3) the battery compartment cover has been moved to the side (see, the engineers do read the reviews!!) making battery changes a breeze. I will agree with other reviewers, the scope body is plastic and does not instill a lot of confidence. However, it has been a very effective (and cost effective) way to get into NV scopes. My neighbors with "better" scopes payed at least twice what I did (and some, much more), and I'm as happy with my purchase as they are with theirs. One fella even traded in his mid-priced unit for a simpler one as he became more and more frustrated by all of the menus. As well, I have this unit mounted to my .22 LR varmint/pest rifle. I can't attest to how well it would hold up on a larger caliber platform. That being said, I intend to move it onto an AR (5.56/300BLK) if needed and expect it to continue working based on the seller's description. All in all, an awesome scope! ... show more

  • Works well
Pattern Name: Riflescope
I use mine in the back yard where the whole area is already IR illuminated by a security camera so I don’t use the built in illuminator. The battery life is really good using it this way. The image quality is good. The vertical and windage adjustments need to be turned a lot to move the hit point. One issue is image blanking after making a shot. Using a Gamo spring type pellet rifle. Seems that is dislodges the battery connection due to recoil. Would be nice if they could corrrect this design flaw. Recommend. ... show more

  • Performance Great; Service Excellent
Pattern Name: Riflescope
I am writing my first review after many years of purchasing items online. I am doing so because the service and performance of my Night Shot has been excellent! The IR illuminator and the zero point were not aligned correctly on the first Night Shot I received. I call the support line, and they expressed shipped overnight to me a new Night Shot. The new scope had the IR illuminator in-line with the zero point. Then I noticed the unit would shut off after each shot. I put Lock Tight on the screws and that solved the issue. I tested the scope during the day and night. During the day it is a bit hard to see certain targets without a lot of contrast; however, at night it works perfectly. Ease to focus, easy to use and shows the target clearly. One time while hunting in my field blind, the scope would not turn on as I must have left the scope on from a prior hunt. I had extra batteries and using only a small red light replace the batteries without having to remove the scope from the rifle. With new batteries, the scope worked perfectly. The only remaining issue is that even when I adjust the elevation to the maximum, the crosshairs are a bit lower than the zero point. I discussed this with a service representative, and he explained this was an issue when using the scope on certain rifle models. He told me the development group was designing a “shimmy unit” that solve this issue and I would have one sent to me free of charge as soon as it was ready. So bottom line, the Night Shot is a great night scope with minimum features, thus easy to use and very affordable; and the service has been excellent. ... show more

  • Good but needs improvement
Pattern Name: Riflescope
Okay but I’m returning. Couple of things I liked. Easy to use controls. Turns on quick and gives a decent view. I was able to clearly see a deer at the far end of the field (220 yards) using a third party IR Illuminator. No. I wasn’t hunting deer at night, but didn’t see any coyotes to offer an comparison. It would have been a very easy shot on the deer. I felt confident I could of identified a coyote for a dog at that distance. The scope actually has a pretty decent built in IR Illuminator, but I wasn’t using it because it drains batteries. Carrying extra batteries isn’t an issue it’s changing them that’s the problem. The batteries are a pain to replace and in most cases you will need to remove the scope to replace the batteries. I was able to mount in the far rear position so that I could just barely and with practice, replace the batteries. With most rifles you will need to remove the scope to replace batteries. It’s this reason and the fact I couldn’t see anything without either the built in IR Illuminator or my own IR that I’m returning. Even with pretty good available light, it’s useless without an IR Illuminator, at any distance. The field of view to pretty narrow, making it difficult to scan within 75 yards. Plastic lightweight feel but felt solid once mounted to the rifle. ... show more
