  • Great scope but....
Pattern Name: RifleScope
Bluf: This sight is amazing, yes it it worth the money, the seller is not very professional and I would buy it from someone else. The scope is amazing however the seller is very unprofessional, I received what appears to be a return or used item. When you spend a grand on something id expect it to have all the plastic and all the parts where they belong in the case. Instead I got a scope that had been clearly opened in a box that was damaged and resealed with tape. If you are going to sell a returned item then you sell it as a return or used and take some money off of the order. Thats common practice. ... show more

  • Based on my experience and research, THIS is the one to get.
Pattern Name: RifleScope
If you're looking for a thermal scope, I don't think you can do better in the price range than the AGM Rattler. It's quite intuitive to use and provides clear, easily-recognizable images in virtually all lighting conditions. I'm especially impressed with the hot-spot locator that puts a moving crosshair over the hottest point in the field of vision - very handy for identifying potential targets. Similarly, under what I would consider "average" use conditions, the setting that shows hot as white and cold as black, but paints over the hottest areas with red, makes target acquisition fast and easy, and a single button push to switch off the red-hot overlay lets you better identify the heat source. The only drawback I found is that, like many such devices, the Rattler eats batteries, and I neither wanted to have to swap batteries in the field nor discover when I want to use the device that the batteries are dead (that happened once, and once was too often). My solution is an $8 USB battery bank from Wal Mart (usually used to recharge or extend the life of cell phones) and created a 3D-printed a mount for it. The battery bank sits vertically along the right side of the Rattler (as you're looking through it) and connects to the power port on the Rattler's left side with an 8 inch USB cable. If you power it this way the instructions state to REMOVE the internal A123 batteries. While there are things that a QUALITY night-vision optic can do that a thermal imager cannot (view objects behind glass, for example), such NV devices are generally priced thousands of dollars higher, and those that aren't usually don't perform that well. For example, one "night vision" optic that I tried (other issues aside) provided "night vision" only when using an infrared illuminator... which to me is like saying that a scope paired with a flashlight is a "night vision" device. My big beef with relying on IR illuminators is that they make YOU a target (to other NV users). Incidentally, I should point out that the Rattler does NOT respond to such IR illuminators, only to actual HEAT sources. There are also thermal imagers costing thousands more than the Rattler, but I think AGM has done a marvelous job of providing what you need at an excellent price. I decided to forego the additional resolution and sensitivity of the higher priced models, and I'm not disappointed. I don't expect to be doing any long-range night hunting, and for the platform and expected range I bought it for (AR15 in .300 Blackout), it makes it easy to find the target under virtually any condition. Even in the Arizona sun there's usually enough temperature separation between the surroundings and warm-blooded beings to target them effectively. To give you an idea of the sensitivity of this device, it clearly shows the footprints where someone has walked across a floor barefoot for several minutes afterward. Buy it! You'll love it. ... show more

  • Initial observations
Pattern Name: RifleScope
Decided to do this review in stages to illustrate the steps to get this thing fielded. Got it mounted no prob on 5.56 AR. Mount is single point cantilever and it will not withstand rough handling. Obviously this is an electronic instrument but its not tough like a EOTECH - far from it. Need to be careful with this thing. The shiny Germanium coated objective lens isn't going to withstand impacts well so dragging it unprotected through vines, etc.. is going to damage it. This thing has a lot going on in its menu that allow user to customize. The thought necessary to design this is amazing. It's going to take me awhile to wrap my head around it but all I'm looking for is a thermal that can detect and allow hits on a 12 inch square target out to 400 yds without fiddling around. I think that's what the American market wants and I'm hoping this delivers. I'm going to test this thing out and let you know, but, if it isn't capable of holding a fairly repeatable zero - it's going back. If it can't hold zero reasonably, then it's a detection unit not a scope. What amazes me utterly is that it can detect birds in flight at about 70 yards. So, therefore, detecting a deer, or even a smaller creature shouldn't be difficult. I have beaver that swim next to my deck and I'll be scoping them at 100 yds and that's a small target when they're in the water. Thus far - very impressive unit. It certainly can detect, I'll investigate it as a scope and report back. Beats the front of objective IR NVG I was once issued - Big time. ... show more

  • best thermal deal out there
Pattern Name: RifleScope
works great so far. compares well to my other atn unit costing double and in some ways may be better. obviously the resolution could be better but that is the price point. I bought on a Prime day so got a smoking deal which I wasn't even in the market for since I already had a thermal. Thought it would make a nice lite hand held scanner, but I've now mounted it and will give it a try. It's nice and compact and light weight. I'm taking it pig hunting later and will update if it fails..... ... show more

  • Great entry level
Pattern Name: RifleScope
This scope is an entry level scope. It does not have the best picture but it will allow you to see your target and engage it effectively. I use mine on a small piece of wooded property that was loaded with hogs. It’s mounted on a .308 and after about 100 shots, it still holds true. Back to the quality of sight. Before buying this one, I was using my friends thermal, it’s a $6k Pulsar and allows you to see the whiskers on a field mouse at 200yrds. You’re not going to get that with this scope, not even close but you’re getting a cheap scope that will still allow you to identify your target and will withstand the recoil from a .308. I use mine in the red hot or fusion settings on most occasions and beyond 60yrds the picture is not clear. You can still tell that it’s a hog, coyote or bobcat but it’s not the clear image you’d get from a higher end scope. Overall, this scope was perfect for my needs as I don’t own the property I’m hunting on, just helping a friend of a friend situation, so I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something that could be useless tomorrow. If you own the property you’re hunting or on a long term lease, I’d buy something higher end but ultimately, it boils down to your budget. Like I said, it does exactly as it should but other options could be better ... show more
