  • It's small but functional.
Size: 5 - 10 gal
This is obviously a small filter, it's not anything fancy and it's not going to polish the water clean, but once cycled if you properly maintain it you will have a decent biological filter for a small tank (under 5 gallon) or 10 gallon with only a few small fish aka small tank with limited bio-load... It's easy to clean, just make sure to clean it as you would any cycled biological filter if you don't want to kill off all the beneficial bacteria, that taking some water from the existing fish tank and use that to clean the sponge, or take some dechlorinated same temp water to clean the sponge so that the bacteria is not killed from chlorine or temperature... You could add some filter floss and get some minimal polishing but it's not going to be significant... Also this comes with a little baggy of activated carbon in the filter, I personally don't use activated carbon for everyday use, and thus I replaced the activated carbon with some extra biological media... ... show more

  • Works great at first, but then...
Size: 2 - 5 gal
I have goldfish. I kinda always worry about oxygen levels in the water and I cleaning the tank; it's mandatory weekly cleanings with goldfish. Anyway, it worked great for about 3 months, then the seals between the pump and filter part weakened or something. What's happening is, plant parts are getting sucked into the pump, and clog the waterfall. Sometimes the plant parts get stuck in the motor area, and the waterfall is reduced to a feeble drip. Maybe it's just the one I got, maybe not. I like it, suction ( pumps and cup ) is good, it's quiet, it's just that the waterfall option isn't working out for me. As for replacing it, I'm going to try a different brand, and see how that one works for the next few months. Update: As they reached out to ask questions on the specifics, and requested images, I'm giving their customer service an extra star. It's a good move. ... show more

  • Working well for my 10 gallon
Size: 5 - 10 gal
It's been quite sometime since I bought this. I am still using it for my 10 gallon turtle tank and it's done well for its cost. It can be used closer to the water or a bit farther, I prefer it farther as I love the ambiance it gives when I'm asleep at night. The tank is in my room. It is an easy clean when needed, and I've never had it unsuction on me before. I'll likely buy something similar when my little guy gets an upgrade. ... show more

  • Well made, even has a spare impeller.
Size: 5 - 10 gal
I haven’t had it set up long enough to see how often it will need cleaned, but I am impressed with the water flow from such a small filter. I have it in a 5.5 gallon. Great fit for that . Size 300. I have many Nicrew lights and have been super impressed with the quality. It appear the filter is the same. Will be ordering more for my rack of small tanks. ... show more

  • Works well; pretty powerful
Size: 5 - 10 gal
This is a nice little filter, especially for the price. The outlet creates a large amount of flow, which pushes my fish around, but it's not too powerful as to be dangerous. My tetras will swim right next to the intake and have never been sucked against the inlet. I think it's safe for small fish to be around, but does it not pull large particles from the water very well. ... show more

  • Great filter. Make sure you get the right size.
Size: 20 - 40 gal
I got the 20-40 gallon rated one for my 20 long, and it is HUGE. I would recommend it only if you wanted a high flow. Pros: Pretty easy to clean High flow Good quality Cons: No adjustable flow knob (I fixed this by cutting and stuffing a piece of coarse sponge in the spray bar) The aerator nozzle is a bit noisy and spurts a lot ... show more

  • So far so good!
Size: 2 - 5 gal
I have a 3 gallon Marineland aquarium that homes an African Dwarf frog. My other pump stopped working or it was barely working. So I purchased this off of the good reviews. My original plan was to house the unit in the back compartment where the other water pump was but it wouldn't work. So I attached it to the back of the aquarium with the spray nozzle above the water for a little waterfall. It's very cute and my frog doesn't seem to mind the movement. I wouldn't recommend if you have Bettas, my snails are getting tossed around which is hilarious. But Bettas would not enjoy the flow. ... show more

  • Cleared up water fast
Size: 2 - 5 gal
I purchased this for a 7-gallon betta and shrimp tank to clear out discoloration from medication after treatment was complete. I needed something with carbon as I only use a sponge filter. The flow is very strong, even in this nano version. I modified by drilling larger holes in the spray bar and pointed them towards the side of the tank near my sponge filter. The water cleared up in about 24 hours. Can't speak to longevity, but I will continue to use this in a hospital tank and see how it goes. Definitely worth the price so far. ... show more
