  • Great camera!
Style: 522GW Front & Rear + 32GB SD Card
Picture quality is amazing! This camera is packed with features. The app doesn't work very well but that doesn't matter to me as much. I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants great protection. Do note that the base is magnetic so if you have a compass in your mirror it will affect it.

  • I've given up on these cameras
Style: 522GW
(I don't work for Nextbase and they are not paying me for this review.) I purchased my first of these 522GW cameras 3 years ago after I was sitting at a red light and was rear-ended by a pickup that then took off. I thought I read the license plate correctly to the 911 operator, but either way, the detective couldn't match the license plate to the truck. I bought the 522GW based on a favorable review on a tech site. It works ok... I guess. It depends on your definition of 'work'. It stays attached to the windshield really well... the menus are easy to use... the desktop software and video download works well. Picture quality is good during the day, even acceptable at night. No complaints about these features. Here are some of the features they don't mention in the reviews: Sometimes it won't turn on. Sometimes it won't turn off. The on/off button is not reliable nor is unplugging the power cable. (It regularly has to format the sd card because of 'read errors' but that may be the card, although I bought a new card and it still happens). It freezes for no reason -- one time just before a car cut me off and almost caused an accident. I would have had no recording which is, after all, the reason to pay so much money for this camera. I just bought a new car and wanted to get a new camera for that car too. My first camera is 3 years old so surely the problems were caused by firmware that's not up to date, a faulty power supply, something that's been fixed in this newer camera. Nope. The newest camera with new firmware (updated from their website) is worse. Yesterday it could not be turned on. We drove 30 minutes before VOILA! it turned on when it got around to it and *seemed* to be recording fine. Tonight the screen split into two for the first time ever (night vision-like picture on the left, normal night view on the right. Bizarre. It seemed to be actively recording). Then, poof, the screen freezes. After 5 minutes I unplugged it but the unit stayed powered on, frozen in time. From 7:19pm (when I took the attached picture) until 7:58pm it was unplugged and frozen before finally shutting off. Don't buy this camera. Two cameras, 3 years apart. Same problems. I would return the first one I bought too if it wasn't so old. Actually, it's just so unreliable that I never know if it's even recording when the 'record' button is blinking. That's my fear: I'll get into another accident and after all this time and money I won't have a video. After all, isn't that what this camera is for? ... show more

  • Downloading is a nightmare
Style: 522GW
The seller was responsive and worked with me to resolve my problem. Updating the rating based on my experience with customer service. — Build quality of the camera is good. But, the software is inefficient. I own a cheaper Nexar which automatically creates Timelapse on my mobile throughout the drive. Timelapse videos won't take a lot of space but can be used for a quick summary of a trip. One can always review the timelapse and download the full resolution video for any part of the record whenever you need. Nextbase 522GW camera's app doesn’t record timelapse. So, it is a pain to review all videos to the full length and download the ones you need. Download takes ages even for the lower resolution. Imagine you come across an animal sighting while driving through a National park, as an example. You reach the hotel and wait for a long time for your mobile app to even download all video filenames. No, need to Say the actual download of video will take even longer. Siri commands work well for recording a clip while driving etc with my old Nexar cam. But, I wasn’t able to make Alexa work for recording a clip to the mobile with this more expensive camera and its app. Basically, the camera build is decent but the app seems to be an MVP and never fully developed. 1 star for picture quality because the video that’s never downloaded is as good as it was not recorded at all. ... show more

  • Finally a dash cam I did not return
Style: 522GW
Also, I finally accepted that any dash cam with phone app will compete with Wireless Apple CarPlay. So you have to plug in your iPhone or no CarPlay. That said, the Nextbase 522GW has outstanding 1440p HD video. You do not need to buy their overpriced 128GB Micro SD card, but DO buy a brand name (SanDisk Max Endurance C10, U3, V30, 4K UHD Micro SD Card - SDSQQVR-128G-GN61A). And ... THE SUCTION CUP MOUNT STAYS PUT !!! Can't overemphasize this. I refuse to put adhesive mounts on my 2021 F150 PowerBoost windshield - PLUS - there are times when I want to put the dash cam out of sight. The power cord plugs into the mount and is difficult to unplug, so if I wand to remove the memory card I take the cam and mount in the house. Obviously I also don't play the 'hide the wire' game. The iPhone app is, well, OK. You can download important video clips to the app and store in the Nextbase Cloud (for 30 days). If you want to keep longer, pull the clip off the card and save on your computer. The Nextbase computer app is quite good. I am all Apple, so I can't speak for and PC differences. Bottom line is that you really only want the clips that contain incidents or notable events. The 'Protect' button at the bottom of the camera saves the video clip, as the card will automatically loop and overwrite when it reaches capacity. The default video clip is 1 minute, and can be changed. You can check current card memory status and format the card via the iPhone app. One other note, I live in Houston Texas and my truck lives in the driveway. The cam stays on my windshield almost always, so it experiences EXTREME heat. After 1 month I have had no issues. I'm an Apple guy, so I don't use the Alexa feature, nor do I care about recording parking mode incidents. But, if you want a dash cam that is reliable with a quality video to catch that one idiot that pulls right out in front of you - this one is a good choice. ... show more
