Took a shot on this one so I could save a bit of money over the name brand hand ascenders, and it’s great. No complaints, works exactly as it should. I use it to escape a rope solo system outside when I’m climbing, so ascending a fixed line.

I bought this when I was just starting out as a stop-gap measure. I didn’t put any faith in it and figured I’d get a better one with tree money eventually. Two years later, I’m still rocking the generic, knock off hand-ascender. The device shows no signs of wear, stress/compromise and my ropes are holding up nicely to it. I’m a pretty big guy (225lbs) and carry about 50lbs up in the tree regularly. I use a zigzag (life-support) and a quality foot ascender, so I don’t feel like I’m jeopardizing safety using this device. I say it’s a champ, or at least the one I have is great! ... show more

This is a solid and relatively heavy gear that locks easily and at the same time securely. The unlocking is easy but the way it is made it would prevent accidental release. I used it to climb to the top of my roof to do some handy work and it performed well.

Okay, I'm not that big. Only about 220lbs. Also, disclaimer, I don't know anything about climbing - yet. However, I did watch a couple of YouTube videos to learn how to use this. I looped my climbing rope over a tall branch, put on my gear, and started using the ascender. I didn't ascend much yet, but it definitely can hold my weight and all the gear (plus the occasional 9 year old child who thinks you're playing some kind of game and climbs up you). I'll update my review as I get more experienced at climbing, but for a beginner with no training or exposure to the sport at all I was able to start using it after reading the instructions and watching a video. ... show more
