  • ACTUALLY WORKS ON CYSTIC ACNE
Style: Spot Treatment
A few years ago, I turned 23 and started developing pretty severe cystic acne on my checks and forehead. At first I figured it was no different than the whiteheads I used to get as a teenager. Nope! Adult cystic acne is another level of painful, persistent acne. Each bump took nearly a month to disappear and there was virtually nothing I could do about it. Even worse, the cyst would leave hyper-pigmentation behind that would take another 6 months to completely fade. Even getting 6-7 cysts/month left my cheeks and forehead covered in dark marks. After several years of trial and error, I finally got my acne under control and my skin back. Neutrogena's light pen is a CRUCIAL item in my regimen. I take it everywhere. Using the pen helps me stop the last few pesky cysts that kept my skin from fully clearing up. I typically get about 2 cysts per month. How I use the pen: - I catch cysts early and this is KEY. You know when you feel the first sign of slight swelling that will eventually become deep acne? That's when I zap it. I use the pen 3-5X before bed, put a little bit of acne cream on top, drink a big glass of water and get a good night's sleep. When I wake up, the cyst is consistently gone or almost gone. Seriously, its gone. Even the worst looking contenders - if I catch it early, its gone. - If I wait until the cyst fully forms, it is too late and the pen only slightly speeds up the process. Acne is an immune response to bacteria within the pores. Cysts form as your immune system fights bacteria in deep layers of your skin. My theory is that the light from the pen, unlike topicals (ie your salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retin-a), can actually penetrate the lower dermis to effectively kill bacteria that causes cysts. When I use the pen, I can see the light shining all the way through my cheek. If you kill bacteria early, before the immune system has a chance to launch all-out war, you can reverse the formation of a cyst. I love this product and it has changed my skin! This isn’t magic, but after being frustrated for so long it feels really close. Note, the pen will make a 'beep beep beep' noise when it runs out of battery. Don't buy a new pen when this happens! Get a small screw driver, replace the AAA battery and it will work just fine. ... show more

  • Finally a Treatment Without Chemicals for My Sensitive Skin I Can Afford
Style: Spot Treatment
I took a chance this would work to reduce bumps from Acne & Rosacea while not irritating my Sensitive, Dry, Aging Skin. I was pleasantly surprised the morning after my first use that a place where my #CoVid19 mask was creating bumps was noticeably smaller & less red. The strap & maybe sweat was irritating the facial skin near my ear & on the end of my nose as well as near the jawline / chin. I have been cleaning my face excessively daily & the dry skin was flaking but I still had bumps coming up or worsening daily. This treatment helped reduce the bumps & prevent them from becoming fully swollen & more painful. I misplaced the pen for a couple of days when I swap computer bags, backpacks & canvass shopping bags to disinfect before using again, I got 4 spots along the jaw that almost touched each other & were big & red. The day after I located it in one of my Ziplock bags & used it again , the bumps were HALF their original size, less red & less painful. I feel this targeted treatment prevents even cystic acne I have fought for decades from getting fully upraised & painful. It lessens the Rosacea bumps also. Reduces redness & swelling /pain. I bought my daughter a model that is rechargeable (avoiding battery replacement) after my success with this convenient small unit. Even if it just kept the bumps from getting bigger as they normally do, it would be worth the money. Since it not only stops the enlarging but reduces the size, redness & pain even a little, I am stoked. Some places take more treatments but those are the ones worth the extra few minutes before makeup & after removing it. Until my skin decides to stop making ugly bumps, I need every reasonable, affordable option I can get without a prescription or office visit. ... show more

  • Light treatment is effective - but very finicky about whether it will turn on
Style: Spot Treatment
Love / Hate this device. LOVE: Its red and blue light is effective. Faster pimple healing by far. Best results if you can catch problem before it turns into a significant pimple. (I get a clue by feeling a little pain in an area, or a little redness before appearance sometimes, and I treat those indicators with good success) On existing large pimples it does help it resolve faster, but not as fast as catching them early. RELATED INFO: I tried a LightStim device before this. Unfortunately, LightStim triggered wicked migraines if I even caught the merest of glimpse of the edge of the light with my eye. Nothing could effectively shield my eyes to not allow the migraine to be triggered. So I had to send it back. Was a real pity, because it was a larger device covering more area and it worked on standard electricity rather than battery power. In contrast, this tiny device, which I expected to not work at all, does work, and also does NOT trigger my migraines even if I accidentally see a bit of the light for a moment. While there is the obvious difference in number of LEDs between these devices, there's also a "lip" around the edge of the Neutragena light. The plastic lip contacts your skin but the light is held just s smidge above that edge. That lip prevents a great deal of light escaping out the sides. You still see a "glow" through your skin - but the Lightstim device had no lip and therefore it was pure LED light if you glimpsed it while in use. (And there was no way to avoid seeing the LightStim light if you used it on a cheek for example. ) This Neutragena device is a little too small to be used for prevention very effectively - but the larger device would have been much better for that purpose. Why don't I buy the Neutragena mask? Lights too close to my eyes will likely be a problem again.) HATE: This Neutragena device has an issue - it will report any battery, new or old, alkaline or rechargable - as dead when it is not. I can get anywhere from 1 to 4 two-minute sessions when suddenly it will beep three times indicating the battery is flat. At first, I believed it was accurate and kept changing batteries. But then it happened quicker and quicker on new batteries. So I ordered a set of rechargeable Enloopes here on Amazon. It keeps telling me even those are dead too. They are not. Here's the oddest part --- if the device tells me the battery is dead by beeping 3 times when I try to turn it on, I can let the device alone for maybe 5 minutes. Then it will work again ... and ... fail again. Another five minutes, it works again, then fails again. So, all those folks who think it is eating batteries --- maybe it is like mine where the battery is not dead, but the device is faulty. I am debating over buying another just to see if it works better regarding power consumption - or another brand of device entirely. For sake of clarity, 10 minutes per day of mid-day sun on my bare face keeps me completely clear of breakouts better than anything else (as long as I continue my usual skin care routine that also prevents acne). As winter came, the UV rays that create that benefit are not available. So this was my "get me through winter" without breakouts effort. (Moderate - a mix of types - some cysts mostly other inflammatory types) Light, whether UVB or this red/blue LED combination, is extremely effective for me. The sun never triggers my migraines though. (Please don't comment to me about the dangers of the sun. I'm aware.) ... show more
